Yan Zhi took an involuntary step back. Her heart raced, and her mind fell into chaos. His words hit her like a bomb, leaving her with a crushing sense of confinement, as though that single sentence had swallowed all her hope and courage.
Yet despite the fear and turmoil inside her, her gaze never wavered. She drew a deep breath and straightened her back.
"I don't believe you," she said quietly, her voice firm beyond words. "No matter what you say, we won't give in."
The words rang with resolve, a declaration against every fear she carried. She knew she was fighting not only the being before her, but the terror within herself. Shadows of the past, fear of the unknown, every feeling and memory became fuel to drive her forward.
Jiu Jia Yi gently took her hand and felt the turmoil within her. His gaze remained steady, as though together they had made their final stand against the bonds of this world. "I'll face it all with you."
The humanoid figure seemed to blur. Its laughter sounded again, but this time there was no ease in it, only an indescribable pain and helplessness.
"You'll understand," it said softly. "Every act of resistance will bring you more despair."
Yan Zhi ignored it. She looked toward the layers of mist around them, seized by a powerful intuition. Everything seemed to have reached a dead end, yet the bond between her and Jiu Jia Yi remained unbroken. Her racing heart, the vibration of the Short Blade, and his hand clasped tightly around hers seemed to tell her they still had a chance.
"We have to break through this mist and find its source," she said, her gaze steady.
Jiu Jia Yi nodded. He saw the determination in her eyes and knew this was not an obstacle beyond them. The space was full of threats they could not understand, but if they stood together, they still had a chance to find the true exit.
After that long silence, they finally stepped forward into the depths of the mist. Each step carried them into unknown territory; each breath held countless possibilities.
The blurred humanoid said nothing more. It only watched them in silence, as though waiting for something. They kept moving forward, resolute and unyielding.
Yan Zhi and Jiu Jia Yi made their way through the spreading mist. Every step felt heavy, as though some unknown threat lurked all around them. The air hung thick and damp, and an invisible force seemed to surround them. Her heart pounded in her chest, each beat reminding her that she did not belong here.
She glanced at Jiu Jia Yi. His face was still calm, though a wary glint flickered in his eyes now and then. "What do you think is up ahead?" she asked, unable to keep the tension from her voice.
Jiu Jia Yi did not answer at once. He stared into the dense mist ahead. He knew this venture into the unknown was no longer merely dangerous. It was a trial of life, death, and fate. Every step was a challenge to the unknown.
