Yan Zhi stopped dwelling on questions she could not answer and focused on the path ahead. She knew it would only grow more dangerous, but she also knew that going on was their only chance of finding a way to survive.
The light ahead kept shifting, as though an invisible force were trying to sway their minds. The pressure in the air grew heavier, as if something enormous were drawing near. Yan Zhi's heart raced again, and her steps faltered. With every step, her spirit seemed to grow heavier.
"We need to be careful," Jiu Jia Yi warned. "This isn't as simple as it looks."
Yan Zhi nodded, her gaze fixed ahead. An uneasy feeling stirred in her. She could sense the world around them changing in some elusive way, as though a powerful force were silently closing in, waiting for the right moment to erupt.
Her fingers trembled, but she held tightly to Jiu Jia Yi's hand. She knew that, in that moment, they depended on each other for more than emotional support. They depended on each other to survive.
In that vast, empty space, there was nothing but their breathing and the sound of their footsteps. The silence was suffocating, as though the rules of time and space had blurred.
"Have you ever wondered why we came here?" Yan Zhi asked suddenly, her voice low and edged with uncertainty.
"I have," Jiu Jia Yi replied. "Perhaps we weren't caught up in all this by chance. Perhaps it was destined to happen."
Yan Zhi said nothing more. She knew Jiu Jia Yi did not want to dwell on the complicated reasons behind it all. The only thing they could do now was keep going, toward whatever lay at the end.
That urgent need to know what lay ahead took root in her heart and grew deeper.
Yan Zhi's steps grew heavy. Each one seemed to push her closer to her limit. The pressure in the air mounted, weighing on her chest like a boulder until she could barely breathe. Her eyes darted around, searching for any sign that might ease her unease. But everything before her remained indistinct. The space seemed like an endless maze, fatally alluring yet filled with a disturbing emptiness.
She stopped suddenly, overwhelmed by feelings she could not put into words—fear, doubt, and a suffocating loneliness. She felt trapped in an invisible cage. Jiu Jia Yi was beside her, yet he seemed impossibly far away.
"Jiu Jia Yi," she said, her voice low and almost choked, "do you really think we can get out?"
He turned to look at her, a flicker of complicated emotion in his eyes. For an instant, it was as though some unknown force passed silently between them, leaving even the air still.
"We can only keep going, Yan Zhi," he answered, brief and firm. Yet his words stirred an even greater turmoil in her heart.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself, but she could not still the turmoil inside her. She pressed a hand tightly to her chest, as though she could hold down her heart as it beat faster and faster. Every second seemed to stretch, bearing down on her until she could hardly breathe.
