She stared into the blank space before her, and a thought suddenly took hold—one she had never dared to face. If everything here was an illusion, if none of it meant anything, hadn't everything she had done been in vain?
"Do you believe any of this is real?" Her voice was so low she could barely hear it herself. "I'm starting to think we might have been trapped in some kind of loop all along, with no way out."
Jiu Jia Yi stopped and turned to look at her, his brow furrowing slightly. "Do you think all the fear and unease are illusions too?"
Yan Zhi bit her lip, conflict flashing through her eyes. She did not answer at once; she only looked at him. She knew the answer was not his to give. It lay within her. But however she thought about it, the question filled her with anxiety. Her thoughts strained toward a truth she could not reach. Suddenly, she no longer dared trust her senses. She even began to wonder whether everything before her was something her own mind had created.
"I don't know," she said softly. "But it feels... more and more like a dream."
"A dream?" Jiu Jia Yi's frown deepened. "You mean we're both dreaming right now?"
"Maybe. Maybe not." Yan Zhi shook her head with a bitter smile. "I can't say."
Her words seemed to make the air heavier, the pressure around them more palpable. She felt trapped in an invisible whirlpool, unable to escape no matter how hard she struggled. She knew her unease and anxiety had, in some way, begun to affect her connection to her surroundings.
"Maybe..." She paused, her gaze drifting. "Maybe this was never something we could control."
"That's right," Jiu Jia Yi said, his voice low. "All we can do is face it and deal with it. We have no choice."
Yan Zhi looked up and saw the resolve in his eyes. It seemed like an invisible barrier, holding all her doubts at bay. A rush of tangled feelings rose within her: wordless reliance on him, and a trace of guilt over her own fragile heart. I depend on him so much—on his calm, his resilience, and the shelter he gives me.
"Then let's keep going." She took a deep breath and raised her head, trying to look stronger.
"Yeah. Let's keep going." Jiu Jia Yi nodded slightly and turned his gaze forward again.
They set out once more. With every step, they seemed to break through another layer of the barriers deep within themselves. Yan Zhi followed close behind Jiu Jia Yi. Her legs were growing heavy, and fear still filled her heart, but she knew she could not stop. She needed him, and he needed her. Somehow, on this road into the unknown, they had found a strange balance.
Yet as their steps grew steadier, their surroundings began to change. Faint sounds replaced the emptiness and deathly silence, as though something were drawing near. Yan Zhi's heart raced again. Suddenly, she thought she saw a blurred shape dart across her vision like a shadow. A chill ran down her spine, and she instinctively tightened her grip on Jiu Jia Yi's hand.
