Yan Zhi knew he was right. Turning back might only lead them into greater danger. The road ahead was just as uncertain, but at least she still had a choice.
She nodded slowly, took a deep breath, and clenched her teeth. "Let's go."
Her words fell softly, as though they had given both of them a little strength. It was faint, but it filled her with a strange resolve. She was no longer afraid—or at least, she no longer showed it. She told herself there was no avoiding any of this. The light ahead and the wordless whispers were part of her life now.
They walked on in silence, toward the heart of the light. The air seemed to thicken, and every step felt heavier than the last. As they drew closer, Yan Zhi felt the pressure mounting, as though some indescribable force were trying to swallow them whole.
Then a faint tremor ran through the ground. The air suddenly grew hotter. Yan Zhi's heart lurched, and she stopped short.
"What happened?" Her voice trembled slightly, unease flashing in her eyes.
Jiu Jia Yi stopped too. His gaze was intent as he surveyed their surroundings. The tremor soon passed, but the strange feeling in the air only grew stronger. "I don't know," he said quietly. "But it feels... like something is waking up."
Unease welled up inside Yan Zhi. Her body wanted to retreat, but she knew that would solve nothing. Whatever lay ahead, she had to face it.
"Let's keep going." Jiu Jia Yi seemed almost untroubled, as if he had expected this all along. His calm gaze gave Yan Zhi no clue what he was really thinking. She wanted to say something, but in the end, she stayed silent.
They pressed deeper into the light. As they walked, it began to shift around them, as though some unseen force were controlling it. Confusion crossed Yan Zhi's face. She was no longer sure what waited at the end of this path.
"Do you see that?" She stopped abruptly and pointed into the distance, her eyes tense.
Jiu Jia Yi stopped and followed her gaze. In the distance, the light had grown more intricate, forming an illusion of interwoven brightness and shadow. Deep within it, a blurred face seemed to be watching them in silence.
Yan Zhi could not make out its features, but the sight made her heart jolt. She felt an intense pressure coming from it, as though it were giving them a wordless warning.
"What is that?" Her voice shook, unease stirring inside her.
"We can't turn back." Jiu Jia Yi's gaze remained steady. "But we have to be careful. What's ahead may not be as simple as we think."
Yan Zhi did not answer. All that remained within her was silence and bewilderment. In that moment, she felt an loneliness she could not put into words. She and Jiu Jia Yi were walking this road alone, unable to turn back or know whether hope or despair lay ahead.
Yan Zhi's steps grew heavier. With each one, she felt fear rising from within, as though an invisible force had bound her tight.
