Her eyes stayed fixed on the light ahead as it grew clearer, while questions and unease kept rising within her. What did those lights mean? Why were they leading her and Jiu Jia Yi deeper and deeper? She could feel a mounting pressure spreading like a tide with every step she took.
She forced herself not to look back, though every heartbeat brought a fresh surge of anxiety. This place felt so alien, so unfathomably deep. She could not understand why she felt so distinctly that she was being tested, watched. The oppressive feeling seemed rooted in every nerve, impossible to shake.
"Jiu Jia Yi, what... what's up ahead?" Her voice was low, full of confusion and fear she could not put into words.
Jiu Jia Yi remained calm, as though their surroundings had no effect on him at all. His steady gaze rested on the distant light, as if it held a secret he might understand. "I don't know either," he said quietly. "But unless we go over there, I'm afraid we won't find any answers."
Yan Zhi trembled slightly. Was he truly unafraid, or was he just forcing himself to stay calm? Beneath Jiu Jia Yi's composure, she knew, there might be a fear even deeper than hers. After all, what they faced was far beyond anything they had expected.
She gripped the railing as if it were the only thing she could rely on, though the comfort it offered was faint. She took a deep breath and forced herself not to let fear rule her. "I understand. Let's go."
As they walked, the light ahead grew hotter and hotter. Yan Zhi could almost feel waves of heat rolling from its source. The air turned scorching, as though the whole world were heating up as they drew closer. Sweat beaded on her forehead, her clothes clung to her skin, and with every step, exhaustion weighed more heavily on her body.
Suddenly, the ground shook violently beneath her feet. Yan Zhi lost her balance and nearly fell. She grabbed the railing beside her and looked up ahead. The shaking lasted several seconds. The heat in the air faded with it, but an uncanny sense of dread settled over everything.
"What happened?" she asked, urgency edging into her voice.
Jiu Jia Yi did not answer at once. He slowly looked around, his eyes growing more alert. He showed little emotion, but the tension beneath his composure was plain. "Something's changed," he said softly. "Perhaps we're... getting close to something."
Yan Zhi's heart tightened. An indescribable pressure bore down on her, as though they were approaching some unfathomable power far beyond their understanding.
Her hand tightened around the railing without her realizing it, her gaze locked on the light ahead. She wanted to ask something, but her mind was a jumble. Every question fell silent, swallowed by her deepening fear.
"Can we still turn back?" she finally asked, her voice trembling. She knew it was far too late to ask, but she could not stop herself.
Jiu Jia Yi did not answer immediately. In truth, he knew better than anyone that turning back was no longer an option. Whether it was the unnerving voice or the unknown concealed behind the light, neither was something they could simply avoid. A flicker of helplessness crossed his eyes, but his calm quickly returned.
