"Impossible," he said quietly. "We've come this far. Turning back would be pointless."

Yan Zhi's heart sank, as though a boulder had settled on her chest. She didn't know why, but an invisible force seemed to be pushing her step by step toward an abyss, as if this were some fated cycle.

She drew a deep breath and forced herself to calm down, though the turmoil inside her would not subside. She closed her eyes for a moment and silently told herself: Whatever lies ahead, we've come this far. All we can do is keep going until we find the answer. She could only hold her resolve until she found a way out.

They started walking again, entering a region of still brighter light. The air grew hotter, until she almost felt as though she stood amid an endless blaze. She could hear her own ragged breathing, and her heart beat faster and faster, as if every passing second drove her toward an inevitable end.

"Yan Zhi, look." Jiu Jia Yi's voice broke through her tangled thoughts. She looked up and followed his pointing hand. Ahead, the light gradually gathered into a hazy shape, like an enormous barrier blocking their path.

The edges of the light seemed to churn and shift violently. Yan Zhi's heart suddenly raced, and everything before her grew less and less real. Her breathing quickened. Unformed thoughts flashed through her mind as fear and tension twisted together into an invisible pressure.

"What do we do?" Her voice came out strained, the unease in her heart swelling into a fear she could not put into words.

Jiu Jia Yi stopped and stared at the mass of light, his gaze intent. A faint trace of doubt seemed to stir within him too, but he did not show it. After a moment of silence, he said slowly, "We have to face it."

His voice was calm, with a firmness that allowed no argument. Yan Zhi knew he was saying it as much to himself as to her. Faced with this unknown terror, he could only choose to confront it rather than keep running.

She bit her lip, forced her breathing steady, and lifted her head, gathering her resolve once more. Whatever happened, she knew there was no turning back. Her only choice was to keep moving toward the mystery ahead.

She took a deep breath and set off again, close behind Jiu Jia Yi.

The light ahead grew stronger, almost piercing the darkness of the night. Yan Zhi felt the weight of every step. With each one, her heart raced faster, the unease in her body seemed to thicken in the air, and breathing grew harder. Her eyes began to adjust to the glare, but she still found no comfort in it. Every step seemed to bring her closer to some unknown force.

"It's drawing us in," she whispered, her voice trembling. But she knew she was not imagining it. The light ahead might be more than light. It felt like a force of unfathomable depth, one that no one who came near could resist.

Jiu Jia Yi did not answer. He merely came to a quiet stop. His gaze remained steady, but the shadow in his eyes betrayed his turmoil. He, too, felt the powerful pull from the source of the light. Though he tried to suppress his fear, that invisible force still shook his resolve.
