Background and History
Bai Mo was the only survivor of the fire at the Crow Letter Ceremony ten years before the events aboard the Holy Shadow. He then disappeared for eight years. Lin Yun's brother named him shortly before dying, calling him “the key to everything” and warning Lin Yun not to seek him out 5.
Bai Mo says he was once an ordinary waiter on the ship. Three years before the confrontation in the Mirror Realm, he entered that realm and saw countless versions of himself. He came to believe he was a repeatable symbol rather than a unique being. He also says he was once a potential “key,” but the door rejected him and chose Lin Yun instead 10 11.

Bai Mo presents himself with elegance and an almost courteous smile, though his eyes appear devoid of emotion 6.
Personality
Bai Mo speaks calmly and often withholds direct answers. He uses his knowledge of Lin Yun's childhood dreams and her brother's actions to press her toward the door, but shows irritation when Jiu Jia Yi challenges his control of events 7 8. In the Mirror Realm, his composure gives way to weariness and desperation: he says he brought Lin Yun to the Eye of the Center because he believes its rift cannot close without her, and that he will die if it remains open 10 11.
