Ch. 41Bed Check
Plot points and events
- Ryan confronts A-Train and The Female while demanding Compound V. A-Train protects The Female, though his crude suggestion of taking the fight to the basement frightens her.
- The Female has already used her last dose. A-Train says he can obtain three more doses the following night, and reveals that Compound V is distributed through a storeroom linked to Supe Charity. He identifies Ezekiel as the person connected to the supply.
- Ryan learns Ezekiel will return to Seven Tower in a few days and decides to wait for him. He leaves A-Train and The Female together, but A-Train soon follows Ryan.
- A-Train invites Ryan to his race against Shockwave. Ryan is unimpressed by the event but agrees to lunch, partly because he still needs A-Train’s help getting Compound V.
- A-Train takes Ryan to a running track, where his brother is waiting. His brother times A-Train running several laps and tells him he is no longer as fast as he used to be.
Character developments and interactions
- Ryan remains focused on obtaining Compound V and shows little interest in A-Train’s race. He is surprised to learn that others see him as someone who hits people readily, and begins to recognize that A-Train has genuine attachments despite his past actions.
- A-Train protects The Female, then leaves her to catch up with Ryan. His warm reunion with his brother reveals a more affectionate, personal side. His confidence about racing contrasts with his brother’s observation that he has slowed down.
- The Female shifts quickly from fear and anger to friendliness when A-Train intervenes. After he leaves, she worries that he has grown tired of her and starts thinking about retirement and her finances.
- Ryan and A-Train negotiate around Ryan’s need for Compound V; A-Train also tries to draw him into the race, using the prospect of seeing the drug’s effects to persuade him.
- A-Train and his brother share an affectionate exchange that recalls A-Train’s long career and the support he received on his way into The Seven.
Significant themes
- Public image versus private character: A-Train’s reputation and past cruelty coexist with loyalty to loved ones.
- Power and dependence: Ryan’s urgency for Compound V drives his dealings with A-Train and his search for Ezekiel.
- Aging and decline: A-Train’s race highlights the gap between his self-image as the fastest and his brother’s recognition that he has lost speed.
- Loneliness and insecurity: The Female’s fear of being abandoned contrasts with the warmth A-Train shows his brother.
