But the Misfortune Church and the Spider Queen Church were far from complete. The former had only Louise as its priest, while Mora was merely a bishop.

Colette and Mora both promised to contact other believers. Annan had just one condition: the newcomers could not take over.

"Rest assured, Free City belongs to Annan Reeves alone," Louise declared, as fiercely as any Free City resident.

Annan shook his head. "I don't mean Free City. I mean you."

"The believers you bring here must follow your orders."

Mora murmured, "That doesn't matter. The Spider Queen Church will obey only you, Holy Son."

"No, it matters a great deal," Annan said firmly. "I don't know these people. I'd have to spend time dealing with them and testing where they stand."

"You're different. You're my friends, and I trust you more. To put it bluntly... I'm rebuilding these churches because of you. I didn't seek you out because I wanted to rebuild the churches."

Louise's cheeks flushed. Mora felt uncomfortable too. Dark Elves had little love or solidarity; they were a band of freaks who kept killing one another, to the point that even the Spider Queen's direct followers were nearly extinct.

Annan meant every word. Why was he establishing the Order Church, the Misfortune Church, and the Spider Queen Church
