Ch. 441Gold Diggers
Key plot points and events
- Count Ulmit gives Annan custody of Joan and her younger sister, then continues scavenging. Annan sends the girls through a Portal to safety in Gemstone City and lends the Count’s soldiers fifty Muskets and ten suits of Plate Armor.
- The party pushes toward Sorlen Heights, fighting increasingly frequent Ratfolk attacks and several small Rat Tides. They find no other survivors.
- While camped near the city, Annan tells the Count about the unexpected expense of mountain copper for the Floating City. The Count drinks too much wine and sings late into the night.
- Sorlen Heights comes into view, surrounded by hundreds of thousands of Ratfolk. Faced with the danger and the cost of hiring two Epic Mages, Count Ulmit hesitates over whether to proceed.
- Annan’s Wind Elementals discover a nearby camp of Gold Diggers, a large group of treasure-seeking mercenaries who know the Ratfolk and may have a plan for entering the city.
- The Ratfolk suddenly stream north, apparently in response to something connected to the Gold Diggers. Lily reports that the Gold Diggers are preparing to leave. Annan decides to enter Sorlen Heights while the Ratfolk are distracted, reasoning that his party can pass as Gold Diggers.
Character developments and interactions
- Annan shows practical generosity by protecting the sisters and equipping Ulmit’s men, while remaining resourceful and willing to take calculated risks. He also admits how little he knows about the world’s customs and expenses.
- Joan and her sister reveal courage and closeness: the younger insists her sister can fight, while the older gently keeps her back from Lily because the girls are dirty. Lily’s kindness puts them at ease.
- Count Ulmit remains focused on the potential treasure but struggles to accept the cost and danger of reaching it. His wine-fueled singing offers a brief, comic respite.
- The Chief Mage provides sober warnings about the Gold Diggers and the likely damage to Sorlen Heights.
- Lily helps with reconnaissance and reports the Gold Diggers’ movements, reinforcing her role as a useful companion.
Significant themes
- Survival and rebuilding: The party treats the abandoned town’s remaining goods as resources for the living, while Annan sends vulnerable children somewhere safe.
- Greed versus risk: The prospect of immense wealth draws Ulmit toward Sorlen Heights despite the Ratfolk threat and the expense of help.
- Pragmatism and adaptation: Annan solves problems by weighing costs, using Elementals for scouting and combat, and exploiting the chance to enter the city unnoticed.
- Ignorance without prejudice: Annan’s lack of local knowledge sometimes leaves him unprepared, but also means he does not share the world’s ingrained biases.
