Ch. 721Temptation and Elopement
Key plot points and events
- After the Dark Elves’ attack, Annan leaves their mansion standing as evidence and reports what happened to Della. She says she is unlike the Dark Elves, who devote themselves entirely to their Matrons.
- Annan visits Red Witch and claims he drove off her enemy, but she is too drowsy to understand what he means.
- That night, Silly Cat patrols Free City with Lily and the other cats. Spider Queen Lolth contacts him and proposes an alliance.
- Lolth explains that a growing barrier is weakening the gods and isolating them in their Divine Kingdoms. Her efforts to restore her power have failed, and she fears she may become a powerless mortal—or an unthinking Godspawn. She believes returning to her realm in the Underdark could help.
- Silly Cat is alarmed by the prospect of leaving Free City and distrusts Lolth, but her warning about the gods’ decline troubles him. Lolth offers a divine Contract forbidding betrayal.
- Annan discovers that Silly Cat has let Lolth out of her bottle. He and Lily lead the cats in catching the pair, and Annan confines Lolth in the bottle and Silly Cat in a birdcage, accusing them of planning to escape together.
Character developments
- Annan remains practical and wary: he investigates the Dark Elves’ attack, reassures Della, and keeps evidence for any future inquiry. He also distrusts Lolth and is angered by Silly Cat’s secret collaboration.
- Silly Cat shifts from smugly mocking Lolth’s fear to taking her warning seriously. Though he resists her proposal, concern about his own weakening power makes him consider it.
- Lolth reveals unusual vulnerability. Having once been an Elf Ranger who pursued power at any cost, she now fears the collapse of divine power and is willing to seek an alliance.
- Della makes clear that she does not share the Dark Elves’ devotion to their Matrons.
- Red Witch remains largely oblivious to events around her.
Significant themes
- The decline of the gods: Divine power is fading, and even powerful beings may be trapped, weakened, or reduced to mortality.
- Trust and betrayal: Lolth’s history of scheming makes Silly Cat distrust her, even when she appears sincerely afraid; her offer of a no-betrayal Contract underscores the difficulty of trusting anyone.
- Fear and vulnerability: A goddess known for cruelty and manipulation is herself frightened by forces beyond her control.
- Loyalty and belonging: Silly Cat weighs a possible escape against his attachment to Free City and his desire to remain near Annan.
Character interactions
- Annan tries to reassure Della that he bears no ill will toward Dark Elves; she distinguishes herself from them.
- Lolth warns Silly Cat that the gods’ weakness may be permanent and proposes they join forces in the Underdark. Silly Cat challenges her motives but listens.
- Annan and Lily work with the city’s cats to catch Silly Cat and Lolth, turning their secret alliance into a confrontation with Annan.
