Ch. 781The Holy Temple Council
Key plot points and events
- Months after his last appearance, Annan has advanced to the seventh row of the Holy Council, a sign that his potential and influence have grown. Hamis VI notices but keeps his distance.
- Grand Duke Yunus Maka apologizes for merchants from his duchy who cheated Annan’s Free City. He offers to repay the money, and Annan accepts; they also discuss expanding Annan’s theater business into the grand duke’s territory.
- At the council, the Bone King proposes a coalition between Middle Earth and the Northern Frontier to resist the Ratfolk and the Demon Tide. The council approves an empire-led coalition, easing some of Free City’s fears.
- Annan spots Clo of the Rikaner Kingdom, who avoids him. Annan loudly recounts how Clo sent two Legendary figures to destroy Free City: one died and the other was wounded. He also tells nearby councilors about the conflict between them, further spreading distrust of Rikaner.
- Back in Free City, Annan reports the council’s decision to Olmedo and Idelia.
- The next day, Evelyn shows Annan a Rikaner newspaper denying corruption and Ratfolk influence. Annan responds by writing a joke mocking the kingdom’s propaganda.
Character developments and interactions
- Annan is gaining standing at the council and using humor, commerce, and public storytelling to build alliances and shape opinion. He remains wary of assassination and keen to expose Rikaner.
- Hamis VI appears proud of Annan’s success but discouraged by the widening gap between them.
- Yunus Maka turns an embarrassing commercial dispute into an opportunity for diplomacy. His warm, practical response wins Annan’s goodwill.
- Clo refuses to engage with Annan and hides himself in mist, while Annan deliberately provokes him before an audience.
- Evelyn enjoys Annan’s political jokes and encourages him to keep producing them. Annan’s report to Olmedo and Idelia reassures them about the empire’s intervention.
