The next day, Shen Bing went back to the library to read while waiting for a call about the delivery.
He wanted to hire a headhunter to find him a professional manager right away, but under the current circumstances, finding someone suitable would be difficult.
His only option was to wait until the first batch of products was ready. By then, any capable manager would know what to choose.
Shen Bing sat in a chair, flipping rapidly through a book titled Principles of Crystal Oscillators and Clock Systems.
Everyone who passed him gave him a curious look.
The nickname "Page-Flipping Oddball" had already spread throughout the University of Electronic Science and Technology campus.
"Classmate, are you looking for something in particular?" A sweet voice reached Shen Bing's ears, and he looked up.
A beautiful woman stood there. She wore no makeup, yet her complexion glowed like peach blossoms. Her skin was flawless as white jade, with graceful brows and a delicate nose.
Shen Bing recognized the beauty.
Yuan Wei was a librarian. She had been a year ahead of Shen Bing and had chosen to stay at the university after graduation.
Even now, countless admirers came to the Library just to catch a glimpse of her from afar.
"Is something the matter, Yuan Wei?"
Talking to a beauty was certainly pleasant, but Shen Bing's time was precious. He could learn a great deal every minute, and wasting it on idle conversation felt shameful. More importantly, he didn't believe someone as popular as Yuan Wei would be interested in him.
Yuan Wei raised her brows. I'm a beauty, aren't I? And he's acting impatient!
Still, she wasn't one to make a fuss, and she wasn't truly angry. "I've watched you flip through books here for three days. You must have gone through thousands by now, so I thought you might be looking for something. I'm the librarian. I wouldn't say I know every book here, but I do know them better than you students. If you need something, I might be able to help."
Her voice was as lovely as a songbird's first notes.
"Thanks, senior, but there's no need. I'm just browsing." Shen Bing gave an awkward smile. He couldn't exactly say he was reading every book in earnest. She'd think he was crazy.
"Then keep browsing." Yuan Wei shot him an irritated look.
She had gone out of her way to help, and he'd brushed her off.
And "just browsing"? Who browsed like that for days? Did he take her for some empty-headed beauty?
At that thought, she couldn't help looking down at herself. Well... they are pretty big.
What am I thinking? That guy must have rattled me.
I've got three hundred thousand left. After this month's wages and factory expenses, there should be about two hundred thousand remaining.
It'd be a waste to leave it sitting there. What should I do with it?
Right, the factory isn't very secure, and I can't afford guards yet. I could buy a couple of big dogs and give them Basic Spiritual Wisdom Potion. That should do for now.
At noon, Shen Bing left the library, his mind still busy working out how to make the most of the resources he had.
After walking a while, he spotted the burly Wang Bo coming out of a teaching building with a slender young woman beside him.
That animal! Shen Bing cursed inwardly, though he was happy for his friend's ability to bounce back.
Then again, Wang Bo wasn't resilient so much as utterly carefree.
"Huh? Shen Bing, where are you headed?" Wang Bo spotted him and immediately came over, bringing the young woman along.
Shen Bing said, "I'm going to check on the glass factory. What, didn't Old Sun tell you guys when he got back yesterday?"
"You've got to be kidding! You really took over that little workshop, Old Shen? I..." Wang Bo was dumbfounded. Shen Bing had sounded serious before, but none of them had truly believed him.
Why would a student at a top university run a Glass Factory that was little more than a workshop?
Sure, there had been a Tsinghua University graduate who sold pork, but that man had since become a pork magnate.
That was different.
Did Shen Bing plan to become a glass magnate?
No, that was a stretch. The country's leading glass magnates were worth billions.
"Don't worry. I know what I'm doing. I won't mess it up." Shen Bing smiled confidently, giving his otherwise unremarkable face an unexpected appeal.
"Then get going. If you need help, just say the word. I'm going to another job fair this afternoon to see if I can find something decent," Wang Bo said earnestly.
Shen Bing nodded and parted ways with Wang Bo.
He took a taxi from the university gate to a pet market in Rongcheng's West District. At a shop specializing in large dogs, he bought two big German Shepherds for a few thousand yuan, delivery included.
A pickup truck dropped Shen Bing and the two dogs off at the Illusion Immortal Glass Factory. The driver left without a word.
Shen Bing led the dogs into the factory—or rather, the little workshop. It didn't even have a gate.
"Boss, you're here." A man in his thirties was standing outside the workshop. He came over as soon as he saw Shen Bing.
He was Dong Qiang, one of the factory workers, and knew a little about glass production.
On his way over, Shen Bing had called Dong Qiang and asked him to wait outside. The materials were due any moment.
"Where is everyone else?"
"Gangzi's showing them how to use the equipment. Once the materials arrive, we can start production right away. It's just..."
"Just what?" Shen Bing looked at him, puzzled.
"Boss, making glass isn't all that complicated. Your factory may be small, but it can still produce about two tons of raw glass sheets a day. If we start tomorrow, finished stock will pile up fast. Have you found buyers yet?"
Dong Qiang had worked at this Glass Factory before. He knew it had shut down because it couldn't find buyers.
The glass industry was consolidating as pressure mounted on energy-intensive, polluting businesses. Companies and individual buyers alike preferred to purchase raw glass sheets from larger factories. Small operations like the former Stone Bridge Glass Factory had no market.
"Don't worry about that. Once our product is ready, people will be lining up to buy it," Shen Bing said with complete confidence.
He had barely finished speaking when a truck pulled up on the road outside the workshop.
"Is this the Illusion Immortal Glass Factory?" The driver jumped down from the cab and came over to ask them.
Shen Bing glanced at the truck. A tarp covered the cargo bed, hiding what was inside.
"Yes, this is the Illusion Immortal Glass Factory, and this is our boss, Shen Bing," Dong Qiang said, quickly making the introduction.
The middle-aged driver looked Shen Bing over, apparently surprised that the owner was so young.
But the driver remained professional. "Boss Shen, I'm here with a delivery from the Heavenly Source Mining Company. The ore you ordered is in the truck. Where would you like me to unload it?"
Shen Bing spoke with him briefly, then left Dong Qiang to handle it. He was the boss, after all. If he had to worry about where every load of materials went, he wasn't doing much of a job as one.
His job now was to raise the dogs.
