With so many people aboard, the vehicle moved slowly across the top of Zion. It took more than ten minutes to leave Zion, then another five or six to reach a rise near the battlefield.
A large number of Zion operatives had gathered there. Their commander-in-chief, Doctor, was there too, watching the battlefield closely so he could assess the situation and issue orders at any moment.
From here, the entire battlefield lay in plain view.
Blood, flames, wrecked vehicles, and severed limbs made up the scene.
Under Doctor's command, the Zion operatives had used those vehicles to build a makeshift position, where they fought the Slavic troops to the death.
Their first round of fighting had clearly been effective. The mangled bodies of Slavic soldiers strewn before the vehicle barricade were proof enough.
Blood ran like a river through the position formed by the vehicles. Bodies lay scattered in every direction, too many to count at a glance, while blood stained the ground and vehicles in broad swaths of scarlet.

The other thing that struck him was the cruelty of war.
He had been through many wars himself, and more enemies had died by his hand than there were corpses on that battlefield. Yet even he had never seen a scene this horrific.
The sight made Pan Long's eyelid twitch. Chimera, walking beside him, had gone deathly pale and looked ready
