Pan Long's sudden appearance shocked Dr. Jones and his companions.
They had faced danger after danger. To say they had escaped death by a hair would be no exaggeration, and by now they were all a little like birds startled by the twang of a bowstring.
Although Pan Long seemed friendly and did not look like one of the Germans, the portly Arab instinctively drew his gun.
Fortunately, Dr. Jones reacted at once. Realizing the newcomer was probably not an enemy, he called out, "Don't shoot!"
The fight that had nearly erupted subsided. Jones turned to Pan Long and asked, "You're from the East. Are you the guardian of this church?"
"The guardian? Of course not." Pan Long smiled. "The guardian's still inside, watching over the Holy Grail."
In the game, the church was packed with traps. Its innermost chamber held an undying Holy Knight who guarded the Holy Grail.
Unlike in the original film, the knight in the game had lived for more than seven hundred years without aging, thanks to the Holy Grail. He had spent those centuries training his body and honing his swordsmanship to pass the time, growing powerful beyond imagination.
In the game, the Holy Knight was invincible. Even if your martial arts were peerless and you managed, through near-miraculous skill, to knock him down or kill him with a single slash, he would revive in the blink of an eye. Only by finding a way to kick him off the cliff could you drive him back temporarily.
Even then, when the church collapsed at the end and countless real and false Holy Grails fell underground, he still appeared in the cutscene. Grumbling that young people had no respect for history, he gathered up the grails—a hint at a later story.
