Before long, Headmaster Ron brought him to the Hero Academy's library.
In the courtyard behind the library, the white-haired old headmaster lay in a wicker chair, squinting as he basked in the sun.
Evening was drawing near, and the sun hung low in the west. Its light fell across the old man and glowed against his white hair. Once, he had been a warrior who could still don armor and wield a sword with all his old vigor despite that full head of white hair. Now, at last, he had grown old.
The setting sun was beautiful beyond measure, but dusk was close at hand!
Ron had clearly seen this sight many times before. He showed none of Pan Long's wistfulness and said softly, "Teacher, Hero Pan Long has returned."
The old headmaster opened his eyes. Confusion clouded them at first; only after a moment did he come to his senses, his face lighting up with surprise and delight.
After they exchanged a few words, Pan Long explained the purpose of his visit.
The old headmaster was getting on in years, and his memory was no longer what it had been. He thought for a long while without recalling anything useful. Finally, he sighed and said, "Come to the palace with me in a little while. We'll ask His Majesty."
