Boom!
The massive explosion reached their ears a moment later, and the smoke and flames obscuring their view slowly cleared.
Before them lay R'lyeh, wrapped in a deep sea of eerie green, with the Evil God Cthulhu Fhtagn standing behind it.
Neither had changed at all.
At the sight of the unscathed Evil God, the pilots stared in disbelief.
"How is that possible? Why didn't it work?"
The fighter jets carried American-made AIM-54 Phoenix long-range air-to-air Missiles. They were powerful enough to destroy heavy fighter jets with ease. Even an Evil God ought to suffer at least some damage from a direct hit.
That other supernatural creature hadn't been like this.
Armored vehicles and helicopters had killed it.
"Open fire! Begin saturation bombardment!" Takano Shōgo ordered calmly.
The armored vehicles and tanks, already in their assigned positions, lined up and fired in unison.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Shell after shell whistled down around Cthulhu Fhtagn and struck its body. Missiles flew among them, setting off explosion after explosion.
The blasts battered their eardrums. Some people nearby were thrown into the air.
Flames burned in the azure Ocean.
Human technology showed its might. Under such a barrage, even the most advanced tank or aircraft carrier should have been destroyed.
But when the smoke cleared, R'lyeh remained unchanged. Countless shells had struck its towering walls of carved stone and its wet floors coated in green slime without leaving a mark, as though it were mercilessly mocking humanity for being unable to blast through even a little mud.
"That's impossible." Disbelief showed on Takano Shōgo's face.
He had known the Evil God was strong. He had imagined it to be terrifyingly powerful and had never believed the Self-Defense Forces could defeat it.
But this was absurd.
It was as if R'lyeh and its master,
