Background / History

Hiruzen studied under the Second, Tobirama Senju, alongside Danzō. Before becoming Hokage, he witnessed Tobirama perform Impure World Reincarnation and retained its seals, chakra requirements, and activation conditions. He and Danzō also survived the Shinobi World Wars together, forming a bond that later influenced his tolerance of Root’s crimes 33 36 103.

His battlefield reputation as the Shinobi Hero came from the Five Release: Great Combo Technique. Enma fought beside him during the wars and gained a reputation as the “strongest summon” 15 32.

As Hokage, Hiruzen allowed Danzō to destroy Hatake Sakumo’s reputation because Sakumo’s strength and popularity made him a political concern. Although Hiruzen could have intervened, he remained silent; Sakumo’s subsequent suicide was an outcome he had not anticipated 8.

Hiruzen likewise knew about Danzō’s theft of Sharingan, murders of Uchiha clansmen, and human experiments. He treated Danzō as a means of performing dirty work while keeping his own public reputation intact. He and his advisers also overlooked Orochimaru’s experiments in Root, and Hiruzen deliberately allowed Orochimaru to escape when he defected 35 103.

During the dispute following a Kumogakure envoy’s attempt to abduct Hinata Hyuga, Hiruzen and the village leadership pressured the Hyuga Clan to surrender the person responsible for the envoy’s death rather than risk war. Hizashi Hyuga took his brother Hiashi’s place and died. As the ultimate decision-maker, Hiruzen bore responsibility for that outcome, a fact later used against him during the Shimura compound attack 127.

His personal losses included Tobirama’s death at the hands of Kumogakure forces, his wife Biwako’s death during the Nine-Tails’ Rampage, and Minato Namikaze’s death sealing the Nine-Tails. He had habitually subordinated grief to his duties, but Shinnosuke’s murder inside Konoha proved especially destabilizing: Shinnosuke was his eldest son and the successor he had spent more than twenty years grooming 31 36.

Appearance

  • Elderly features: A deeply wrinkled face and graying goatee 12 103 132.
  • Hokage attire: White Hokage robes and a hat whose brim frequently conceals his expression 12 69.
  • Retirement clothing: Wears a dark gray kimono over a white underrobe at the Sarutobi compound after resigning. His wrinkles and under-eye bags become more pronounced during this period 88.
  • Hand scar: A long-healed scar between his thumb and forefinger 71.
  • Covert clothing: Black night clothes and a face covering during his infiltration of the Shimura compound 125.
  • Disguises: Assumes the appearance of ANBU captain Shinichi Sarutobi and later watches Danzō’s execution proceedings disguised as an ordinary old man 133 148.

Personality

Hiruzen combines political calculation with an insistence on personal authority. He repeatedly invokes Konoha’s interests and the Will of Fire to justify his decisions, but treats challenges to his leadership as threats. When Yongye questions the legality of Root’s actions, Hiruzen avoids answering directly and resorts to an arrest order 13 16 47.

His reputation matters intensely to him. He promotes himself as the strongest Hokage, and Tsukikage’s condemnation of him as a failed leader wounds him even more deeply than Konohamaru’s death. Losing his office does not immediately change his self-image: he continues declaring himself Hokage while rejecting the possibility of becoming a rogue ninja 119 132.

Personal grief increasingly drives his judgment. He nearly kills Danzō over Shinnosuke’s death, plans retaliation against Danzō’s family, and attacks Kakashi after identifying him through Lightning Blade. Nevertheless, he can restrain himself when circumstances demand it, accepting a temporary truce with Danzō and stopping short of striking Jiraiya after their relationship breaks down 33 125 130 133.

He also shows genuine concern for loyal subordinates. After Shisui loses his eyes and attempts suicide, Hiruzen stops him and insists that he still belongs to Konoha and can serve its people 98.

His caution toward Yongye initially rests on the possibility that the young Uchiha might open all Eight Gates and force a mutually destructive confrontation. This fear contributes to his repeated concessions, although he simultaneously pursues opportunities to eliminate Yongye and other perceived threats 28 47 52 71.

Ultimately, preserving his remaining family outweighs preserving his name. At his trial, he recognizes that refusing to confess might allow his reputation to be restored after his death, but accepts Yongye’s bargain to protect Asuma, his last surviving direct descendant 179.

Abilities & Skills

Five-Nature Ninjutsu

Hiruzen’s signature Five Release: Great Combo Technique unleashes fire, water, wind, earth, and lightning simultaneously 15.

  • Bombards an enormous area, making it effective for clearing a battlefield 15.
  • Its distinctive traces become evidence used to implicate him in both the trading-company attack and the Shimura massacre 66 128.
  • Coordinated attackers using the technique overwhelm his defenses at the Shimura compound 125 126.
  • Hiruzen recognizes that the attackers’ combined version is more powerful than his own execution of the technique 125.
  • Also prepares an unnamed attack combining earth, water, and lightning during the massacre, but smoke bombs interrupt the confrontation before he releases it 128.

Elemental Attacks and Defenses

Hiruzen uses several individual elemental techniques in direct combat 126 130 131.

  • Wind Release: Great Breakthrough: Produces a gale that tears apart Kakashi’s room and blasts through a wall 130.
  • Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning: Releases thick smoke followed by erupting flames, forcing Kakashi to abandon his counterattack 130.
  • Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere: Used against the injured Kakashi before the masked man rescues him 131.
  • Earth Flow Wall and Water Formation Wall: Layered defenses against the combined elemental assault on the Shimura compound; both prove insufficient 126.
  • Chakra barrier: Forms a translucent defensive barrier while retreating into smoke-obscured terrain 128.

Summoning Technique: Enma

Hiruzen’s contracted summon is Enma, a white-furred giant ape with a diamond-hard body 32.

  • Enma stands over two meters tall and can withstand the Kusanagi Sword without being scratched 32.
  • Fought alongside Hiruzen during the Shinobi World Wars 32.
  • Summoned during the confrontation with Danzō and again during the Shimura compound assault 32 126.
  • Coordinates staff strikes with Hiruzen’s punches against the attackers’ Rotation barriers. They briefly damage individual barriers but cannot break through the three defenders’ alternating protection 127.

Staff Combat and Taijutsu

Hiruzen combines staff attacks with close-range strength and quick reactions 130 131 132.

  • Pressures Kakashi with the Adamantine Staff while chaining elemental attacks 130.
  • Catches Kakashi’s Lightning Blade at the last moment and knocks him through a window with a chakra-enhanced punch 131.
  • Strikes Orochimaru hard enough to smash him through a pine tree, though Orochimaru survives 132.

Shadow Shuriken Technique

Hiruzen multiplies an enormous thrown shuriken into eight projectiles 126.

  • Calculates their trajectories to attack from the front, sides, and rear, closing off escape routes 126.
  • Three masked attackers counter the volley with Rotation 126.

Movement and Disguise

Hiruzen uses Body Flicker for rapid movement and Transformation to conceal his identity 46 97 133.

  • Moves quickly enough to intercept Danzō at the training ground 46.
  • Infiltrates the Shimura compound silently despite wearing geta 125.
  • Transforms his face, build, and clothing to impersonate Shinichi Sarutobi 133.

Forbidden Techniques

  • Impure World Reincarnation: First performs the technique after reviewing Tobirama’s materials, using Shinnosuke’s remains as a medium and a condemned prisoner as the living sacrifice. The questioning fails to clear Danzō because Shinnosuke says the killer resembled him 33 35 36 44.
  • Reaper Death Seal: Proposes using it against Yongye if he opens all Eight Gates, asking Homura and Koharu to create an opening. Its actual use by Hiruzen is not shown in the provided material 71.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Adamantine Staff — His principal close-combat weapon during the fights with Kakashi and Orochimaru 130 132.
  • Crystal Ball — Used to watch Danzō’s public punishment remotely from the Sarutobi compound 97.
  • Smoking pipe — Regularly carried in his office and during political confrontations 8 13 66.
  • Poison vial — According to Shisui’s testimony, Hiruzen supplies poison and asks him to help murder Yongye. Jiraiya obtains the poison from Tsunade under the pretext of pursuing Orochimaru and secretly passes it to Hiruzen, who then brings it to Shisui 165 176.

Relationships

  • Tobirama Senju — Teacher. Hiruzen learned the principles of Impure World Reincarnation from him; Tobirama later refers to him as “Monkey” 33 36 255.
  • Danzō Shimura — Longtime comrade, political partner, and rival. Hiruzen tolerates his covert crimes but removes him as adviser and later suspects him of killing Shinnosuke. Their shared history continues to complicate his response to Danzō’s downfall 18 33 97 103. Before his execution, Danzō publicly accuses Hiruzen of secretly supporting the persecution of the Uchiha, knowing about Root’s abductions and experiments, and shifting blame onto his subordinates 147 148.
  • Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu — Elder advisers and political allies. Both join the trap against Yongye and are executed alongside Hiruzen 35 167 181.
  • Biwako Sarutobi — Wife. Dies during the Nine-Tails’ Rampage 31.
  • Sarutobi Shinnosuke — Son and ANBU commander. His death drives Hiruzen’s confrontation with Danzō and attempt to question the dead through reanimation 8 33 66. Hiruzen regards him as his most valued successor and has spent more than twenty years preparing him for that role 31 36.
  • Sarutobi Tsukikage — Daughter-in-law, Shinnosuke’s widow, and ANBU deputy commander. She blames Hiruzen’s tolerance of Danzō for the deaths of her husband and son 66 119.
  • Konohamaru Sarutobi — Grandson. His death intensifies Hiruzen’s desire to retaliate against Danzō’s family 119 125.
  • Asuma Sarutobi — Son. Yongye uses the prospect of sparing Asuma and preserving Hiruzen’s bloodline to pressure him into confessing 179. Asuma attempts to receive his father’s court-ordered beating in his place, but Yongye refuses 177.
  • Jiraiya — Disciple. Initially rejects Hiruzen after the Shimura massacre, but later recognizes that he has been framed and remains anguished by his public trial 133 176 179. Before the failed ambush, he secretly supplies Hiruzen with Tsunade’s poison and agrees to prevent her from interfering 165.
  • Tsunade — Disciple and successor as Fifth Hokage. The massacre forces her to confront the conflict between loyalty to her former teacher and her responsibility to enforce justice 129. After Jiraiya reports her relationship with Yongye, Hiruzen orders him to keep her from disrupting their assassination plot 165.
  • Orochimaru — Disciple turned enemy and temporary co-conspirator. He helps plan the ambush against Yongye, then acts as Yongye’s inside man during Hiruzen’s trial 146 167 178. After Hiruzen’s death, he invokes the execution of his teacher and the former advisers while requesting help from the reanimated First and Second Hokage 255.
  • Shisui Uchiha — Trusted informant and protégé. Hiruzen saves him from suicide, but Shisui later rejects loyalty to Hiruzen personally and testifies against his poisoning plot 19 98 167 176. During the ambush, Shisui turns Justice Judgment against him, forces him to his knees, and declares that serving Konoha requires opposing rogue ninja such as Hiruzen 168.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Trusted Uchiha informant tasked with monitoring Yongye. After Hiruzen’s execution, Itachi claims the former officials were forced to confess 19 181.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Former ANBU subordinate. Hiruzen’s guilt over Sakumo’s death feeds his suspicion of Kakashi; their relationship culminates in a lethal confrontation 8 130 131.
  • Uchiha Fugaku — Uneasy political ally and suspected rival. Hiruzen interprets Fugaku’s concealed Mangekyō Sharingan as a potential threat and plans to eliminate him alongside the masked man and Yongye, but later cooperates with him in seeking to preserve Danzō for the ambush 35 52 103 105.
  • Uchiha Yongye — Principal political enemy. Yongye engineers crises that destroy Hiruzen’s authority, exposes his complicity with Danzō, and ultimately presides over his execution 73 103 135 181.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Holds deep affection for Hiruzen. The claim that Yongye harmed the Lord Third helps persuade Naruto to oppose Yongye 163.

  • Reinterprets Fugaku’s previously concealed Mangekyō Sharingan as evidence of possible ambitions against Konoha’s leadership 35.
  • Despite distrusting Danzō, agrees that the masked figure responsible for the Nine-Tails attack must be eliminated 44 45 46.
  • Secretly recalls Jiraiya and Tsunade for the operation while also seeking to curb Yongye’s influence 47.
  • Expands his intended targets to include Fugaku, resolving to eliminate the masked man, Yongye, and the Uchiha clan head during the same operation 52.

Trading-Company Crisis and Resignation

  • Denies attacking the Five Rings Trading Company, arguing that the use of Sarutobi techniques is deliberately planted evidence. Homura and Koharu remain suspicious because of his earlier argument with its manager 66.
  • Faces Yongye’s public questioning before villagers and clan leaders, admitting that the investigation has found no suspect 70.
  • Receives temporary relief when Shisui redirects the confrontation into a duel with Yongye 70.
  • After Shisui’s defeat, accepts responsibility for failing to find the culprit and resigns as Hokage 73.
  • After resigning, recognizes Yongye’s investigations of Kakashi, the Hyuga Clan, and Root as a campaign that is turning public opinion against the former leadership, and warns Danzō not to act rashly 88.
  • Attempts to intervene in Danzō’s trial, only for Yongye to reject his authority as a former Hokage. Hiruzen then invokes Shisui’s standing as the victim to continue pressing the issue 99 100.
  • Offers Yongye a billion ryō to spare Danzō so that the masked man can still be lured out. Yongye instead demands lives from the immediate families of Hiruzen, Fugaku, and Danzō, provoking Hiruzen and Fugaku to prepare to attack him 105.

Shimura Massacre and Flight

  • Enters the Shimura compound intending to kill Danzō’s eldest son and grandson, combining a stated bargain with revenge for his own family 125.
  • Instead encounters a coordinated extermination attack using his signature technique, Susanoo, Rotation, and Lightning Blade 125 126 128.
  • Tries to stop the attackers, but Jiraiya and Tsunade arrive to find him masked amid destruction bearing traces of his own ninjutsu 128 129.
  • Attacks Kakashi, believing Lightning Blade identifies him as one of the killers. Kakashi’s rescue by the masked man convinces Hiruzen that he has defected 130 131.
  • Fails to convince Jiraiya of his innocence and leaves Konoha alone, claiming a classified mission. Yongye orders him branded an S-rank missing-nin with a hundred-million bounty 133 135.
  • News of his flight spreads beyond Konoha and encourages calls to attack the village. Rasa proposes an immediate invasion, while Chiyo and Ebizō warn that Konoha may be more dangerous without Hiruzen 143.
  • Watches his reputation deteriorate further as Danzō’s execution proceedings expose his knowledge of the crimes committed by Root 147 148.

Failed Ambush, Trial, and Execution

  • Joins Orochimaru’s plan to use Shisui against Yongye, with reanimated Hashirama and Tobirama available as potential weapons 146.
  • Approaches the hospitalized Jiraiya for help, insists that Yongye was responsible for the Shimura massacre, and offers a witness to support his account 159.
  • Receives Tsunade’s deadly poison from Jiraiya, instructs him to keep Tsunade from interfering, and brings the vial to Shisui as part of their plan to kill Yongye 165.
  • Organizes a trap enclosed by the Four Violet Flames Formation, delaying reanimation so Hashirama’s chakra will not expose the ambush 167.
  • Praises Shisui after he poisons Yongye and Orochimaru, then realizes Shisui has turned against him. Shisui’s newly awakened Justice Judgment forces Hiruzen to his knees beneath the weight of the Justice Scales 168.
  • Is captured with the conspirators; Shisui testifies that he only pretended to cooperate with Hiruzen’s poisoning plan 171 176.
  • Denies the Shimura massacre while Orochimaru falsely implicates him in both that crime and Pain’s attack on Konoha. Yongye subjects him to fifty blows before ordering medical treatment 177 178.
  • Orochimaru additionally alleges that Hiruzen supported cloning research for immortality and lecherous purposes. These claims form part of his testimony against Hiruzen, rather than an independently established account of Hiruzen’s actions 178.
  • Faces a private ultimatum: confess and implicate his advisers in exchange for a promise to spare Asuma 179.
  • Accepts the ultimatum and publicly endorses Danzō’s and Orochimaru’s accusations, including false admissions that he destroyed the Shimura Clan and ordered Pain’s attack. He then details corruption and dealings involving the two elders, leaving them in despair 179.
  • Is publicly beheaded with Homura, Koharu, and Ryoma using the Dog-Head Guillotine. Itachi subsequently disputes the verdict, claiming the confessions were forced and Yongye destroyed the Shimura Clan 181.

Posthumous Reputation and Rehabilitation Efforts

  • During Rasa’s sentencing, Yongye contrasts the dignity of the Dragon-Head Guillotine with the treatment Hiruzen and Danzō received, presenting Rasa’s confession as grounds for a more honorable execution 232.
  • Orochimaru cites the deaths of Hiruzen, Danzō, Homura, and Koharu when asking the reanimated Hashirama and Tobirama to confront Yongye. Tobirama questions Tsunade about whether the Uchiha truly killed “Monkey” and the others; Tsunade asks the deceased Hokage to leave their descendants’ affairs to the living 255.
  • A later Konoha notice defending Hiruzen and Danzō prompts argument among villagers. Yongye rejects the effort to rehabilitate them and resolves to retaliate against Konoha 276.
