Background / History
Danzō studied under the Second, Tobirama Senju, alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi. The two survived wars together and maintained a political partnership for decades. Hiruzen tolerated Danzō’s abuses partly because Root performed the covert, disreputable work that the Hokage would not undertake openly 33 103.
Danzō controlled Root for more than thirty years, cultivating operatives who would obey him even against the Hokage. His ambition to become Hokage also drove him to undermine potential rivals: he orchestrated the rumors that destroyed Hatake Sakumo’s reputation, fearing that Sakumo could become the Fourth Hokage. Hiruzen knowingly allowed the campaign that culminated in Sakumo’s suicide 7 8 31.
His persecution of the Uchiha escalated from surveillance and exclusion to using classified missions to isolate and kill clan members. He collected their Sharingan and cooperated with Orochimaru’s human experiments. Yongye’s parents were killed as part of these schemes; their surviving summoning beast identified Danzō as the killer. Yongye’s elder brother subsequently died attempting to assassinate him, and Root took the brother’s body 1 6 20 35.
Danzō also incurred the lasting hatred of Nagato and Konan through his role in Yahiko’s death and the crippling of Nagato’s legs. Their resentment later becomes a reason for Pain to participate in Orochimaru’s operation against Konoha: Pain refuses to allow Danzō to become Hokage and intends to destroy him when he believes himself victorious 64.
Appearance
- Bandaged face and body: Usually keeps half his face covered, leaving one eye visible; much of one side of his body has also been wrapped in bandages for years 16 20 31.
- Concealed right eye: Beneath the facial bandages is a transplanted Three-Tomoe Sharingan 102.
- Modified right arm: Grayish-white skin conceals three additional Three-Tomoe Sharingan arranged between his wrist and elbow when publicly exposed 102.
- Usual clothing: Wears a kimono and wooden sandals, and commonly walks with a cane 31 89 97.
- Appearance after imprisonment: His right eye socket is empty after the Sharingan’s extraction. Following Tsukuyomi, he frequently appears slumped, drooling, and unfocused; when brought to the Shimura ruins, he wears a shabby gray kimono over chest bandages 104 118 123 135.
Personality
Danzō combines meticulous political calculation with an extreme sensitivity to humiliation. His fellow elders describe him as someone who repays a slight tenfold and will accept almost any cost to obtain what he wants. Losing his advisory position drives him to sacrifice a Sharingan for immediate recovery, seek dangerous allies, and plot Hiruzen’s assassination 20 30 31.
His desire for the Hokage’s seat is closely tied to his fixation on powerful eyes. He covets Fugaku’s and Shisui’s Mangekyō Sharingan, then imagines dominating the entire shinobi world if he obtains the Rinnegan. Nevertheless, he can restrain his greed when he recognizes another conspirator’s hidden agenda 17 36 47 71.
Danzō treats subordinates and relatives as expendable when his survival is threatened. He arranges Nonō’s death regardless of whether she completes her mission and orders the murder of his own daughter-in-law. His ruthlessness coexists with fear: he begs Hiruzen for protection when exposed and refuses a prison escape because Yongye might retaliate against the Shimura compound 81 103 113.
He habitually justifies his methods as service to Konoha and the greater good. When Itachi confronts him in prison, he invokes village security, praises Itachi’s supposed Hokage-like judgment, and tries to portray family attachment as a limitation. His own reasoning for sacrificing Shimura Mai similarly treats her as an outsider whose value to the clan has already been fulfilled by bearing children 66 113 118.
Repeated defeats gradually turn his contempt for Yongye into deep fear. During his public beating, he considers Izanagi but cannot bring himself to abandon his position in Konoha or gamble on escaping Yongye. By the time he submits, he regards Yongye as a devil rather than merely an insolent Uchiha 97.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere
Danzō’s signature ninjutsu fires highly compressed Wind Release chakra from the mouth as penetrating, bulletlike blasts 17.
- Can inflict multiple through-and-through wounds on a target 17 30.
- Its recognizable effects make Danzō vulnerable to impersonation: its use in Shinnosuke’s murder and the attack on Fugaku causes officials to suspect him 30 35.
- His ordinary chakra reserves cannot sustain the exceptionally powerful, three-clone barrage used against Fugaku 35.
- During the hospital pursuit, his volley punches a large hole in a wall and eventually strikes and dispels the apparent Kakashi Shadow Clone 81.
Izanagi
Danzō learned the secret of Izanagi from Kagami Uchiha and obtained the Sharingan needed to use it through theft and murder 20.
- Briefly converts unfavorable reality—including death—into a dream while making a favorable state real 20.
- Uses it after cutting his own throat to erase both his death and the injuries inflicted by Yongye 20.
- Permanently blinds one Sharingan per use, making his stolen eyes a finite survival resource 20 89.
- Declines to activate it before a later confrontation because he has only three reserve Sharingan left 89.
- Considers using it during his public punishment, but fear of Yongye and reluctance to abandon everything he has built prevent him from attempting an escape 97.
- The extraction of all his remaining Sharingan deprives him of the implanted eyes needed for further use 104.
Transplanted Sharingan and Hashirama Cells
Danzō’s body incorporates stolen Sharingan and cells from the First 102 105.
| Modification | Function or limitation |
|---|---|
| Right-eye Sharingan | A transplanted Three-Tomoe eye that cannot be deactivated 102. |
| Arm Sharingan | Three Three-Tomoe eyes remain in his arm when exposed; his reserve eyes support repeated access to Izanagi 89 102. |
| Hashirama Cells | Implanted to suppress Sharingan rejection, but become destructive once the eyes restraining them are removed 105. |
| Loss of implants | Extraction of all four remaining Sharingan leaves his body breaking down; Yongye’s medical ninjutsu stops the deterioration 104 105. |
Summoning Technique: Baku
Danzō’s contracted summon is Baku, an enormous elephantlike beast with dark gray scales, a trunk, and curved tusks 32.
- Its mouth generates tremendous suction capable of drawing in ninja, ninjutsu, and surrounding terrain 32.
- Summoned to oppose Hiruzen’s Enma during the Root–ANBU confrontation 32.
- The confrontation is interrupted before the two summons fight 32.
Covert Operations and Forbidden-Technique Knowledge
Danzō uses Root’s intelligence network, assassins, and cooperation with researchers to pursue political and personal objectives 7 31 35.
- Orders investigations into mission records, movements, and chakra expenditure when Kakashi becomes a suspect 7.
- Plans mind-reading and brutal interrogation of detained Uchiha to identify further targets 13.
- Studied Impure World Reincarnation’s principles under Tobirama and proposes using it to question Shinnosuke; Hiruzen performs the actual summoning 33 36.
- Develops a contingency involving the reanimated First and Second, later taken over by Orochimaru after Danzō’s downfall 146.
Power Progression
| Stage / Event | Development or change | Chapter(s) |
|---|---|---|
| Training under Tobirama | Studies the principles of Impure World Reincarnation; this knowledge later supports his proposal to question the dead Shinnosuke rather than establishing that he personally performs the summoning. | 33 36 |
| Acquisition of Izanagi and stolen eyes | Learns Izanagi’s secret from Kagami Uchiha and obtains Sharingan through schemes against the Uchiha. | 20 |
| Recovery after Yongye’s first attack | Uses Izanagi to erase his self-inflicted death and restore his injured body, permanently blinding a transplanted Sharingan. | 20 |
| Remaining reserve before arrest | Has three reserve Sharingan left and decides against spending one preemptively. His later public exposure reveals three arm eyes in addition to his right-eye transplant. | 89 102 |
| Removal of all remaining Sharingan | Zhan Zhao extracts four eyes, eliminating his remaining implanted Sharingan resources. | 104 |
| Hashirama-cell rejection | Loss of the Sharingan destabilizes his modified body; Yongye uses medical ninjutsu to halt its deterioration. | 105 |
| Tsukuyomi-induced mental damage | Itachi’s torture leaves him barely responsive, with severe mental damage that persists through his subsequent imprisonment and appearance at the Shimura ruins. | 118 123 135 |
| Execution | Zhan Zhao beheads him with the Dog-Head Guillotine, ending his active role. | 149 |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Cane — His habitual walking aid, frequently gripped or struck against the ground during confrontations 31 71.
- Kunai — Uses one to cut his throat before Izanagi restores him 20.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Fellow student, longtime comrade, political protector, and rival for authority. Their partnership collapses into assassination plots, accusations, and Danzō’s final public denunciations 31 103 147 148.
- Tobirama Senju — Former teacher; Danzō studied the principles of Impure World Reincarnation under him 33.
- Kagami Uchiha — Source of Danzō’s knowledge of Izanagi 20.
- Uchiha Yongye — Enemy whose family Danzō destroyed. Yongye defeats, prosecutes, psychologically torments, and ultimately has him executed 1 15 104 135 148.
- Orochimaru — Research partner and co-conspirator. Their cooperation includes human experiments and plans to kill Hiruzen and Yongye, though Danzō distrusts Orochimaru’s motives. Orochimaru also attends the three-party negotiations disguised as a Root operative 31 35 47 113.
- Masked “Madara Uchiha” — Secret collaborator whom Danzō initially seeks to involve in destroying the Uchiha. Danzō later blames him for the attacks destabilizing Konoha and proposes an ambush against him 20 37 44.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan leader subjected to Danzō’s pressure. Learning of Fugaku’s concealed Mangekyō makes Danzō regret not ambushing him for his eyes 12 36.
- Uchiha Shisui — Target of a hospital poisoning and eye-theft operation intended to obtain his Mangekyō Sharingan. Shisui nevertheless lies publicly to protect Danzō under Hiruzen’s influence, before becoming increasingly disillusioned with their leadership 79 80 100 111.
- Uchiha Itachi — A shinobi Danzō considers a hound he has trained for years. Their relationship becomes openly hostile after the attack on Shisui and the attempt on Sasuke: Itachi tortures him with Tsukuyomi and later confesses to massacring the Shimura clan 118 141.
- Yakushi Nonō — Coerced intermediary. Danzō threatens her orphanage to secure obedience, then arranges delayed poisoning to silence her 79 81.
- Aburame Torune — Trusted operative who advises retreat during the hospital pursuit and later carries Danzō’s assassination orders from prison 81 113.
- Yakushi Kabuto — A Root spy whose former affiliation remains known to Yongye, Orochimaru, and Itachi after Danzō’s death 173 186.
- Hatake Sakumo and Kakashi — Danzō engineers Sakumo’s disgrace, then suspects Kakashi may seek revenge after discovering the truth 7 8.
- Pain / Nagato and Konan — Enemies who hold him responsible for Yahiko’s death and Nagato’s crippled legs. Pain joins Orochimaru’s operation intending to prevent Danzō’s rise to Hokage and take revenge 64.
- Tsunade — Longstanding critic of his covert methods. Hiruzen’s evasiveness concerning Danzō contributed to her estrangement from her teacher; she welcomes Danzō’s downfall but initially opposes Yongye’s unrestricted treatment of a village elder 88 102.
- Shimura family — Includes an eldest son, eldest grandson Shimura Hiroki, and daughter-in-law Shimura Mai. Danzō selects Mai as a sacrifice to save himself, but is later devastated by the massacre of his clan 113 125 135.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Confrontation at the Uchiha Compound
After four Root operatives and three ANBU are killed, Danzō orders an investigation into Kakashi and leads a large Root force to the Uchiha compound. He accuses the clan of sheltering the killer and plotting rebellion, then demands eight Uchiha suspects who know both Fire and Lightning Release 7 9 12.
He subsequently adds Yongye to the list, reasoning that someone capable of injuring Itachi must have concealed considerable strength and likely awakened the Sharingan. Danzō intends to use mind-reading and interrogation of the detainees to identify further powerful Uchiha and gradually dismantle the clan 13.
Yongye challenges him and overwhelms Root using the Seventh Gate. Nearly half of the more than thirty operatives die, including Yamanaka Fū, and every survivor is wounded. Hiruzen orders Danzō to withdraw and removes him from his advisory position 15 17 18.
Recovery and the Shinnosuke Accusation
Danzō restores himself with Izanagi and seeks agreements with Orochimaru and the masked “Madara” to eliminate Yongye. His private meeting with Orochimaru develops into a plan to kill Hiruzen and install Danzō as Hokage 20 31.
He is subsequently accused of murdering Sarutobi Shinnosuke because the killing uses Vacuum Sphere. Although innocent of that murder, Danzō cannot explain his whereabouts without exposing his separate assassination conspiracy. Root and ANBU nearly fight before he proposes reanimating Shinnosuke to identify the killer 30 31 32 33.
Shinnosuke’s uncertain recollection only deepens suspicion: the attacker resembled Danzō but seemed too powerful to be him. Danzō instead concludes that the masked “Madara” is manipulating the factions 36 37.
Alliance Against the Masked Man
Danzō persuades Hiruzen and Fugaku that the hidden attacker benefits from civil war and must be eliminated. He requests restoration of his elder position after a successful ambush, but Yongye publicly humiliates him during the negotiations 44 45 46.
When Danzō attempts to leave, Hiruzen blocks him to preserve the operation. Itachi proposes that Danzō pay Yongye one hundred million ryō, which Yongye accepts and demands by the following day. The participants then discuss the ambush’s timing, personnel, coordination, and village safeguards 46.
Cooperation does not end his scheming. He and Orochimaru discuss drawing Yongye away from the operation, introducing a Rinnegan wielder, and pursuing a secret excavation. His unused contingency involving reanimated Hokage later passes to Orochimaru 47 146.
Shisui’s Eye Theft and Public Trial
After Shisui reveals his Mangekyō, Danzō surrounds Konoha Hospital with more than twenty Root operatives. To avoid direct exposure, he coerces Nonō into poisoning Shisui and stealing his eyes. A masked thief intercepts the container, while an apparent Kakashi clone and four fighters using Rotation delay Root’s pursuit 71 79 80 81.
Danzō destroys the apparent Kakashi clone with Vacuum Sphere, but the four other obstructing figures disappear without leaving bodies. Believing Kakashi and the Hyuga have both thwarted him, he suffers an emotional collapse over the loss of the Mangekyō that seemed within his reach 81 83.
When Yongye arrives to investigate Root, Danzō orders resistance if he forces entry. The confrontation nevertheless ends with Danzō bound and taken away, while surviving Root operatives openly weep at the humiliation of the leader they had revered 88 92.
Yongye subsequently subjects Danzō to a public courtroom punishment reaching two hundred staff blows. Exposure of the Sharingan in his right eye and arm turns the proceedings into a scandal implicating Hiruzen’s tolerance of his crimes 95 97 102 103.
Yongye sentences him to public death by bisection in one week. Zhan Zhao extracts his four remaining Sharingan, and Yongye stabilizes the resulting Hashirama-cell rejection 104 105.
Prison Schemes and the Shimura Massacre
Yongye offers to spare Danzō in exchange for one immediate-family sacrifice from each of the Shimura, Sarutobi, and Fugaku’s families. Danzō takes the proposal seriously, ordering Torune to kill Shimura Mai, Konohamaru, and Sasuke. He also changes his conspiracy’s priority from killing Hiruzen to killing Yongye 105 113.
Before these orders, Yongye shows Danzō a vision of his apparent future defeat by an older Sasuke. The vision depicts repeated Izanagi revivals, the exhaustion of numerous implanted Sharingan, and a failed final sealing attempt. Danzō considers the images probably genuine; they are a displayed possible future, not a battle he actually fights in the present storyline 107.
Itachi later enters Danzō’s cell, warns him never to harm Sasuke again, and reveals his own Mangekyō Sharingan. He subjects Danzō to a full day and night of nonfatal cutting within Tsukuyomi, leaving him barely conscious and threatening a longer punishment if Sasuke is targeted again 118.
Yongye subsequently confirms that Danzō’s mind has been severely damaged and orders Itachi’s arrest. Hiruzen visits intending to confront Danzō over Konohamaru’s death, but finds him unresponsive. Learning that Sasuke survived while only Mai died in Danzō’s family intensifies Hiruzen’s desire for retaliation; he later approaches the Shimura compound targeting Danzō’s eldest son and grandson 123 125.
The Shimura compound is subsequently destroyed, leaving no surviving residents. Still disoriented by Itachi’s Tsukuyomi, Danzō is brought before his relatives’ bodies. Yongye temporarily reanimates his son and grandson to deepen his grief 129 135.
Danzō initially rejects the idea that Hiruzen or Itachi would have exterminated his entire family and instead accuses Yongye. At the ensuing public trial, however, Itachi confesses to killing the Shimura clan in retaliation for Danzō’s theft of Uchiha eyes and attack on Sasuke, prompting Danzō to lunge at him 136 141.
Final Testimony and Execution
At his public execution, Danzō admits targeting Uchiha and taking their eyes. He accuses Hiruzen of enabling the persecution through Hokage Office mission assignments, knowing about Root’s abductions and experiments, and later shifting responsibility onto Danzō and Orochimaru. He also alleges Hiruzen pressured the Hyuga to sacrifice Hizashi 147 148.
His testimony is influenced by his hatred of Hiruzen and by the warning that Itachi could otherwise go free, leaving the Shimura deaths unavenged. Danzō is placed beneath the Dog-Head Guillotine on Yongye’s order; his death is subsequently acknowledged by Orochimaru 148 149 150.
Despite the earlier sentence of death by bisection, the execution itself is a beheading. Zhan Zhao operates the guillotine, and Wang Chao raises Danzō’s severed head before the applauding crowd. Yongye then dismisses the court 104 149.
Posthumous Influence
Yongye later cites Danzō’s death as a completed part of his revenge when discussing Konoha with Kakashi. The contrast between Yongye’s successful retaliation and Kakashi’s own endurance of the leadership’s abuses deepens Kakashi’s frustration with his circumstances 157.
Danzō’s former intelligence apparatus also remains relevant after his death. Kabuto’s history as a Root spy is known to Yongye, who agrees to give him another opportunity, and is later invoked by both Orochimaru and Itachi 173 186.
