Chapter 1001: The Ringing
When Eucali realized a machine was firing at her, there was almost nothing around her to use as cover. She spun around and ran back, bullets nearly grazing her hair and the skin of her ears. With every step, a voice screamed in her mind: Am I alive?! Am I alive?!
The twenty meters from the passage back to the corner became the longest distance of Eucali's life. She miraculously dodged every bullet behind her, then stumbled on the downhill slope and evaded a machine gun approaching from the side—when she looked back, an Assault Machine had appeared less than ten meters away from her at some point.
Eucali crawled forward on all fours for two steps, got back up, and fled toward another intersection. An unprecedented despair soaked through her—how could she possibly escape this?

The hard plastic trash bin was quickly riddled with holes. Its hollow body collapsed first, and the crowd inside fell in terrified confusion, dying quickly. Those at the edge leaped down and fled in panic; they were first shot in the calves and fell, then struck in vital areas.
Like vultures, more and more Assault Machines gathered around the victims. They seemed unable to determine whether their targets were dead, simply concentrating their fire on them. Eucali seized the opportunity and ran up another slope.
