Luz frowned, took several deep breaths, then finally stood and walked to the low table in the center of the hall. She pulled out several tissues and blew her nose hard.
The entire classroom was silent, making every little sound she made clearly audible. She took a few breaths, threw the used tissues into the trash, and suddenly looked at Pakart.
"Do you believe in an afterlife, Teacher?"
Pakart looked at Luz as well. "Why do you ask?"
Luz fell silent for a moment, then said softly, "Because... because someone said there's no afterlife at all..."
Before Luz could finish, another child rushed to speak. "There is no afterlife to begin with. When people die, there's nothing left."
"Shut up!" Luz looked at the child with disgust. "I wasn't asking you—"

The other child's face flushed red. Though she clearly had much more to say, she chose to endure it for the time being.
"If you're asking what I think," Pakart said, looking back at Luz from where she sat on the floor, "I don't really believe in an afterlife either."
Luz almost immediately sighed, her gaze filled with the dazed disappointment of hope being dashed.
