Background / History
Inspection Corps disaster
According to Cai Mei’er, Xuan Zi’s mishandling of an Evil Soul Master purge led to nearly twenty Shrek Inspection Corps members dying outside combat. She accused him of allowing enemies to escape and pursuing them without finishing them off, leaving the members’ families exposed to retaliation. When a surviving child was brought before him, he declared the child an Evil Soul Master pawn and advocated killing him as a warning 10.
Star Dou Great Forest hunt
Xuan Zi accepted a student Soul Ring hunting mission partly because he wanted to eat a Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear rumored to inhabit the forest. Encountering Yan Shaozhe, Jiang Hao, and Ma Xiaotao, he insisted on taking the two youngsters into his own party. He rebuked Yan for leaving his duties as dean and guaranteed that he would bring the children back alive 3.
A day later, Xuan Zi left the group. Although he had said he would protect the students from nearby shadows, his absence left them exposed to the hundred-thousand-year Wolf King. Students died or suffered disabling injuries, while Zhang Lexuan, Ma Xiaotao, and Jiang Hao survived 3 7 8.
Ma Xiaotao demanded punishment upon returning to Shrek. Mu En instead retained Xuan Zi as the academy’s intended future guardian, assigned him to serve as a Path Protector at the next tournament, and left Yan Shaozhe to arrange compensation for the victims 8.
Newspaper scandal and confinement
Headlines subsequently accused Xuan Zi of being the Evil Soul Masters’ supreme elder and linked him to the Zhang Mansion massacre. These were circulating allegations, not an established affiliation. Cai Mei’er argued that his actual conduct made the accusations credible and threatened Shrek’s recruitment 10.
Mu En ordered Yan Shaozhe and Xian Ling’er to retrieve him from the forest. Their search failed because Xuan Zi had already returned to Shrek City, where Shadow Bro reported that he killed two Steam Bird News managers. Mu En then brought him back and confined him; by the later execution dispute, he was forbidden to leave Sea God Island 10 13 14 62.
Attempted execution and Shrek rebellion
Xuan Zi saw the accusations against Jiang Hao and Ma Xiaotao as an opportunity to clear his own name. He intended to execute them as Evil Soul Masters, demonstrating that he would kill even academy insiders rather than shelter them. He invited experts from across the continent to witness the proceedings—a decision that also gave Jiang Hao time to arrange reinforcements 62 63 64.
Yan Shaozhe opposed the execution and fought Xuan Zi. Although Yan’s light attribute reached Ultimate Light and his Soul Power increased during the battle, Xuan Zi defeated him. Newly promoted Titled Douluo from the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect likewise considered a direct rescue effectively suicidal 66 68.
The battle turned against Xuan Zi when Luo Sanpao, empowered by the Radiant Ancestral Dragon, attacked alongside the Heaven-Defying Demon Dragon. Their combined assault wounded him and broke through his protective Soul Power barrier. Du Busi then drove him into the ground with a devastating stomp, briefly knocking him unconscious. Xuan Zi nevertheless climbed out of the pit afterward and resumed searching with his Spiritual Power 69 70.
Leadership and selective discipline
Afterward, Xuan Zi became dean of both Shrek’s Martial Soul and Soul Tool departments. At Nine Treasures City’s gates, he avoided personally handling an uncertain confrontation and ordered Fan Yu to resolve it instead. His hesitation reflected concern that provoking the increasingly powerful Star Luo Empire would leave him responsible for the consequences 100 127.
When students defeated and humiliated Zhou Yi, Xuan Zi witnessed their behavior but defended them as helpless children. He threw Zhou Yi into Sea God Lake and reprimanded Wang Yan for nearly attacking them over his destroyed Money Tree. Privately, he decided their ability to defeat a teacher justified investing academy resources in them and hoped this would win Mu En’s approval 125 127.
Xixi, Ling Luochen, Chen Zifeng, Gongyang Mo, and Yao Haoxuan later reported that Xuan Zi and Mu En expelled them after they repaired damage a train had caused to Shrek’s city wall. The former students survived through Adventurers’ Guild commissions, and Gongyang Mo’s family pressured him to return and apologize to Xuan Zi 143.
Impersonation in the Dou Ling Empire
Du Busi arranged for Tree Bro to disguise him as Xuan Zi, intending to cause trouble without implicating the Body Sect. The disguise reproduced Xuan Zi’s build, clothing, and distinctive odor. Du Busi believed only using his own Martial Soul, Soul Rings, or Soul Skills would expose him 137 138 139.
During the disguise’s preparation, the real Xuan Zi was in the Star Dou Great Forest, taking a break and examining a ten-thousand-year wild black pig’s entrails. He interpreted a sneeze as evidence that Shrek missed him and believed the academy could not function without him 139.
The later Dou Ling scandal was publicly attributed to Xuan Zi: a prince and another man had been tied up, and the empire sent ten million Gold Soul Coins and an apology to Shrek. Residents blamed Xuan Zi for another blow to the city’s reputation and business. Mu En refused the payment at the academy gates and ordered him brought back 149.
Cassell College challenge and public apology
Ma Xiaotao returned to Shrek with Cassell College and openly challenged the academy. Xuan Zi tried to intervene, but Du Busi blocked him. Yan Shaozhe demanded that Shrek clear Ma Xiaotao’s name, publicly apologize, and make Xuan Zi bow and apologize to her 150.
Xuan Zi also tried to stop Zhang Lexuan from reuniting with the opposing group, reminding her that she belonged to Shrek and had been brought to defeat Ma Xiaotao. Zhang Lexuan instead declared that she would make her own choice 152.
During the confrontation, Yan Shaozhe broke Xuan Zi’s pointing finger and challenged him as an equal-level opponent. Unlike their earlier battle, both were now level 98, while Yan’s Ultimate Light could suppress Xuan Zi’s ordinary devouring attribute 155 156.
After Shrek’s defeat, Xuan Zi was forced to apologize publicly before the continent. The immediate uproar subsided, but student withdrawals exceeded those of the previous several centuries combined 158.
He remained active afterward, descending into an alley during an investigation involving Bei Bei. He sensed blood and a faint killing aura, then reacted with bewilderment and helpless resignation after hearing what had happened 175.
Appearance
- Hair and beard: Straggling white hair and a beard; his hair is later described as disheveled and slick with grease 3 127.
- Hygiene: A sour, greasy odor associated with infrequent bathing and fatty food, strong enough to overwhelm Wang Yan at close range 127.
- Habitual presentation: Commonly appears with liquor and food, including a greasy chicken leg, cheap wine, or a gnawed rib bone 3 62.
- Identifying scent: Tree Bro reproduced his odor as part of Du Busi’s disguise; Du Busi regarded it as an important detail of the impersonation 139.
Personality
Xuan Zi’s appetite and drinking repeatedly influence his conduct. Yan Shaozhe regards him as someone who mostly eats and lazes around, while his interest in the Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear hunt centers on its meat rather than the students’ needs 3.
He is highly concerned with authority and reputation. He uses Shrek’s rules to challenge Yan Shaozhe’s protection of Ma Xiaotao, then treats a public execution as a way to erase suspicions about himself. His later defense of troublesome students is similarly tied to their usefulness and his hope of earning Mu En’s favor 62 63 127.
His caution increases after the rebellion, but responsibility is still frequently passed to others. At the city gates, he waits rather than intervene and orders Fan Yu to clean up the dispute. His conviction that Shrek would collapse without him contrasts with the declining teaching and Soul Tool standards reported under his leadership 100 138 139.
