Background / History
Founding and Earlier Conflicts
The Uchiha fought the Senju before Konoha’s founding. Madara Uchiha later became one of the village’s founders alongside Hashirama Senju, although he ultimately left the village. Clan elders retain a tradition of leadership through strength, expressed as “the strong rise and the weak step aside” 3 11 12.
An old clan legend describes a girl called a “Demon” who could drain chakra and plunge the world into endless sleep. According to the story, the Uchiha and Senju joined forces to seal her. Genshiki doubts the legend’s accuracy but remembers unexplained chakra depletion among Uchiha members, followed by its sudden disappearance. Shinji later encounters Nanashi, whose memories of war and mistreatment by the clan provoke violent hostility toward other Uchiha 32 186.
The Nine-Tails Attack and Isolation
An unidentified Sharingan-wielder controlled the Nine-Tails during its attack on Konoha. At the clan meeting, Elder Genshiki explains that the Third Hokage’s ANBU surrounded and confined the Uchiha that night. Danzō separately acknowledges that he conducted the operation while Hiruzen ordered the encirclement 8 17.
Public suspicion subsequently damaged the clan’s standing and made villagers fear the Military Police. Hiruzen describes relocating the Uchiha as a protective measure, but the resulting compound stands apart from central Konoha. By the time Shinji returns, relations have deteriorated enough for the clan to prepare a coup 11 12.
Shinji’s Leadership Challenge
Shinji organizes forty-one young supporters, representing roughly two-thirds of the three-tomoe users in their generation. He defeats three influential elders to secure their backing, while Shisui approaches the peace faction through his connection to Kagami Uchiha 11.
After clan elders disclose Shisui’s Mangekyō abilities and Danzō steals his Kotoamatsukami eye, Shinji treats their actions as betrayal. He kills Elder Shimizu, and by dawn the elders aligned with the village have been eliminated 14.
At Naka Shrine, Shinji rejects Fugaku’s proposed vote and demands a duel. Fugaku offers to step down peacefully, but Shinji insists on proving his claim publicly. Despite still possessing a three-tomoe Sharingan, Shinji defeats Fugaku and is formally named clan head 16 17.
Reform Instead of a Village Coup
Fugaku initially maintains his support for a coup after losing leadership. Shinji rejects an armed uprising, arguing that civil war would unite Konoha’s other clans against the Uchiha and could destroy the clan even if it won. He instead proposes reclaiming influence within the village 18.
Fugaku’s faction and Itachi accept Shinji’s authority. Shinji retains experienced members rather than removing them for having served his predecessor, then separates police work from the clan’s new military preparations 19.
Itachi’s Staged Defection
Itachi’s apparent attack on Izumi and a night of fires, explosions, and screams lead Konoha’s leaders to suspect Uchiha infighting. Guards deny outsiders entry, and Hiruzen waits outside the compound with ANBU and Root. By dawn, residents and police resume their ordinary routines 33.
Konoha subsequently declares Itachi an S-rank missing-nin accused of murdering clansmen and attempting to kill Shinji. Shisui learns that Shinji arranged the defection but remains frustrated by his secrecy 37 43.
Shinji eventually reveals that the defection was staged and that his dōjutsu preserved Izumi’s life while making her appear dead. The deception nevertheless leaves lasting personal damage: Izumi seeks revenge, and Sasuke refuses to forgive Itachi for abandoning their family. Shinji later returns Itachi to Konoha 246 247.
Integration and Village Defense
The clan’s later policing shows coordinated tactics strong enough to impress the reanimated Tobirama. Hashirama also observes children from different clans gathering together and Uchiha serving alongside other clans in both ANBU and the Military Police 146 147.
During Obito’s assault, the Uchiha take a leading role in Konoha’s defense. Itachi explicitly states that they mobilized out of loyalty to the village, not because Shinji had prepared them to do so 288.
Organization and Traditions
Leadership and Clan Meetings
- Strength as legitimacy: Elders and younger members regard demonstrated power as a central qualification for leadership. Shimei nevertheless insists that Shinji must provide a clear direction as well as strength 11 16.
- Meeting eligibility: Only three-tomoe Sharingan users qualify to attend the Naka Shrine clan meeting 15.
- Ancestral shrine: Yashiro identifies Naka Shrine as dedicated to the clan’s ancestors; its underground chamber contains the Uchiha Stone Tablet 15.
- Internal factions: Before Shinji’s accession, the clan includes Fugaku loyalists, Shinji supporters, neutrals, and a peace faction that Shinji’s narration calls the “surrender faction” 11 15.
- Limits on internal violence: Shinji orders his followers to leave the leadership contest to himself and Fugaku. Yashiro likewise warns both contenders against seriously injuring one another 15 16.

Institutions Under Shinji
