Background / History
Siege of Dawn III
Gul'dan commands from the captured Star Fortress while Orks assault Jungle Hive City. Surrounded by the bodies of Imperial officers in its command room, he berates his subordinates for failing to overwhelm the defenders quickly. He orders stronger attacks and directs the Big Meks to sabotage the fortress's controls, intending to turn its defenses against the Imperial line. More than a dozen Imperial battleships and Battle Barges arrive as the fortress's energy drops 23.
Duel with Captain Wilson
During the Word Bearers' boarding assault, Gul'dan crushes a wounded legionary inside his Power Armour and throws the corpse toward Captain Wilson. Wilson charges him, evading his warhammer and answering with rapid, precise Power Sword strikes. Gul'dan lands a punch that sends Wilson flying, but loses his left hand to a counterattack 25.
By the duel's final standoff, Gul'dan's warhammer has been reduced to scrap and one arm severed at the elbow. Pain and blood loss slow him, while Wilson's cold determination unsettles him. When both attack again, Wilson cuts across Gul'dan's neck, killing him 26.
Aftermath
Gul'dan's death breaks the morale of the Orks aboard the fortress, causing the survivors to scatter. Wilson orders the remaining resistance cleared, and a Techmarine restores control and returns the station to its designated orbit. Although Gul'dan's scheme is stopped, the ground assault continues into Jungle Hive City's second defensive ring 27.
Appearance
- Enormous build: Nearly three times Captain Wilson's size 25.
- Tusks and wide maw: Prominent when he mocks the wounded Word Bearer in his grip 25.
- Single eye: Described as burning with rage and panic during the final duel 26.
- Green blood: Pours from his severed arm and pools on the fortress floor 26.
Personality
Gul'dan is impatient and domineering, refusing explanations for the slow offensive and demanding results. He enforces his authority through threats and violence against subordinates and Gretchin; the Big Meks obey him nervously 23.
He treats human opponents with contempt, calling Space Marines “little shrimp” and mocking their strength. His confidence falters against Wilson: he instinctively recognizes the captain as unusually dangerous, then becomes increasingly fearful as his weapon and arm are destroyed 25 26.
