Power Progression

Psychic energy has no single advancement path. The following are documented awakenings, enhancements, and temporary increases in its wielders.

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Newly awakened, approximately Alpha-level — Lorgar 17 Already rivals an Alpha-level psyker despite having only recently begun using psychic energy. His golden fire can wound souls.
Near-death awakening — Saladin 378 Emerging psychic power repairs his catastrophic injuries. A call from the realm he recognizes as Heaven guides and intensifies the awakening, producing battlefield-wide golden sand.
Intensified green psychic manifestation — Amg 543 His battle cry accompanies an eruption of psychic force described as more savage, ancient, and terrifying than before. Green fire pours from his body.
Temporary access to the Emperor’s authority — Lorgar 707 Receives purer, more fundamental golden energy from humanity’s collective subconscious, identified as part of the Emperor’s essence. The infusion strengthens his body, psychic reserves, and six wings.
Beta to temporary Alpha-level — eight Thousand Sons psykers 916 Magnus’s Grand Spell and its associated arrays elevate their power. Each had previously possessed enough strength to destroy an army single-handedly.
Severalfold collective enhancement — Royst 918 Ten Word Bearers Librarians channel energy through an array into him, giving him the strength to fight an Alpha-level opponent.
Golden power awakening — Lorgar 920 While catastrophically injured resisting Magnus’s sphere, his body and hair blaze gold. His increased strength briefly pushes the sphere backward.
Chaos awakening and bodily reshaping — Corax 1035 Bella’s black psychic energy activates his Eternal Mark of Chaos. Its runes reshape his body to better contain the Chaos Gods’ power.
Post-resurrection enhancement — Lorgar 1155 His psychic energy has become more sensitive and powerful, but also “heavier.” Anna warns that overuse could cause him to lose himself.

Nature and Origins

  • Psychic potential varies by species. Many species produce psykers, while the Aeldari possess innate psychic abilities 17.
  • The C’tan and Necrons lack psychic potential. They despise psykers and have designed warriors to hunt and destroy them 17.
  • Manifestations are shaped by their wielder. Psychic energy can become fire, lightning, shields, weapons, sand constructs, or invisible forces 17 378 447 448.
  • Physical appearance is not a reliable measure of power. Best’s squad encounters a gaunt, apparently frail humanoid whose psychic presence makes their souls tremble 449.

Human Psychic Development

The earliest human psykers were powerful beings known as Shamans. Psykers subsequently remained unknown to humanity for millennia, before appearing in large numbers at the end of M22 17.

Increasing psychic mutations are presented as signs of humanity’s evolution toward a stronger, smarter psychic race. Its emerging members remain vulnerable, however, because they lack the strength needed to withstand the Warp’s dangers 17.

Documented Manifestations

Magnus and the Thousand Sons Blue flames, chains, and concentrated energy Used in amplified spells, restraints, attacks, and bodily protection 912 916 917.

Psychic Grades

The Imperial grading system measures psychic strength. It does not describe a particular technique or guarantee that its wielder can safely control that strength 17 918.

Grade Documented Capability Examples
Omicron Faint abilities that may activate subconsciously 17. No named example is given in the supplied account.
Beta Powerful Thousand Sons psykers can individually destroy an army. Beta-level psykers also contribute energy to Magnus’s Grand Spell 912 916. Prospero’s contributing psykers, including Ahriman among the eight foremost participants 912.
Alpha An Alpha-level psyker can split a Titan in two. Alpha-level strength can contend with a Primarch and alter a battle’s outcome 17 916. Lorgar’s initial power, Mary, and the temporarily elevated Thousand Sons psykers 17 623 916.

Abilities and Applications

Destructive Projection

Psychic energy can be released directly or concentrated through weapons.

  • Fire and lightning: Best annihilates more than a hundred Constructs with one lightning strike and destroys a reinforced blast door with a focused lightning lance 447 448.
  • Psychic weapons: Lorgar ignites ordinary blades and creates a sword entirely from compressed divine psychic energy 17 563.
  • Large-scale destruction: Freed from Blackstone suppression, Lorgar’s sword wave erases a huge stretch of a pocket dimension. Magnus later cites Lorgar’s destruction of Davin’s moon and planet 310 868.
  • Soul damage: Lorgar’s fire can wound souls; his attack on Valeria destroys her manifested shell and severely injures her essence 17 563.

Shields and Counter-Psychic Fields

Psychic defenses can absorb attacks, protect groups, and interfere with hostile abilities.

  • Lorgar forms a golden shield against Supreme Seer Xinaniels’s psychic assault, although her connection to the Craftworld allows her to steadily overwhelm it 183.
  • Hercules’s golden psychic armour disperses a Khrave Progenitor’s destructive Warp energy and repels its corrupting attack 279.
  • The same golden field interferes with the Progenitor’s teleportation coordinates, increasing the energy cost and reducing its effectiveness 279.
  • Best reshapes gravity around his squad to counter an enemy’s immobilizing gravitational field 449.
  • Lorgar contains an Alpha-level psyker’s self-detonation inside a psychic barrier 917.

Healing and Physical Enhancement

Psychic energy can restore damaged bodies and temporarily increase combat performance.

  • Mass healing: Lorgar’s life-and-order energy stops bleeding, restores damaged organs, and knits broken bones among wounded Death Guard 278.
  • Combat empowerment: His blessing forms additional armour over Hercules’s Power Armour and awakens dormant, Primarch-given strength 279.
  • Mobility support: A shared field improves Lorgar’s and Hercules’s jumping ability, time aloft, and landing accuracy 536.
  • Self-restoration: Saladin’s awakening repairs his broken spine, breastbone, and other wounds, though he remains physically strained 378.

Mental Intrusion and Illusion

Psychic attacks can bypass physical armour and target memories, perception, or will.

  • Forced memory extraction: Lorgar tears through a captive xenos officer’s protected mind, obtains navigational information, and destroys its consciousness 17.
  • Memory-based hallucinations: The living station overwhelms Chelast with an illusion using his childhood, dead mother, and a false Emperor 204 205.
  • Perceptual disruption: Lorgar’s concentrated golden light briefly blinds the Rangdan Emperor’s psychic perception without delivering physical force 471.
  • Direct control: Mobius sends psychic flames into mortal crew members, piercing their wills and controlling their bodies 1079.
  • Resistance is possible: Chelast recognizes contradictions in his illusion and breaks its hold through anger and resolve. Conversely, Tzeentch successfully deceives Lorgar with an elaborate false victory 205 913.

Psychic Sensing and Foresight

Psychic perception can reveal minds, energy pathways, hidden presences, and possible futures.

  • Lorgar searches the Law of Faith by extending his senses throughout its compartments, perceiving the vessel as a three-dimensional chart of lights 620.
  • He probes the Laer Blade’s material structure, energy circuits, amplifiers, reservoirs, and possible contamination 479.
  • The Emperor uses psychic energy to seek a symbolic reflection of Anastasia’s essence, receiving the image of The High Priestess 526.
  • Mortarion predicts an enemy counterattack within 47–62 hours, assigning it a 73.8% probability. He insists that his ability is scientific “numerology,” not psychic prophecy 272.
  • Saladin’s psychic sand disrupts Curze’s foresight, demonstrating that predictive abilities can themselves be interfered with 378.

Telekinesis and Environmental Control

Psychic force can move matter, transform surroundings, and conceal a wielder among constructs.

  • Best compresses hundreds of tons of wreckage into a barricade five metres high and nearly two metres thick within two or three seconds 447.
  • Lorgar seizes a Cabal operative by the throat with an invisible psychic hand 625.
  • Saladin turns battlefield materials into golden sand, traps Angron in a quicksand vortex, and forms weapons and figures from it 378.
  • Saladin’s thousands of duplicates appear psychically identical to him. Their destruction produces sand clouds that attack Lorgar’s face and erode his perception 403.

Collective Channeling

Psykers can pool their strength through devices, arrays, or a designated recipient.

  • One hundred Beta-level psykers feed Magnus through Psychic Focusing Devices, while eight elite participants amplify him at the pyramid’s summit 912.
  • Ten Word Bearers Librarians channel their strength into Royst through a quickly constructed array 918.
  • Lorgar receives a temporary infusion connected to the Emperor’s essence and humanity’s collective subconscious 707.

Limitations and Dangers

  • Warp exposure: Unchecked psychic activity threatens entire worlds and risks corruption or catastrophe 17 746.
  • Involuntary activation: Even an unconscious emotional leak from an Alpha-level psyker can disturb the Warp and produce unforeseen consequences 623.
  • Exhaustion: Psychic exertion can leave its wielder mentally sluggish; Saladin’s powerful attacks consume both psychic reserves and physical strength 327 401.
  • Bodily overload: Emperor-bestowed power places an unbearable burden on Lorgar’s muscles, bones, nerves, and cells. Maintaining artificially elevated Alpha-level power likewise strains a Thousand Sons psyker 401 918.
  • Limited attention: The crystal-powered humanoid has nearly limitless energy, yet struggles to control its fragile body while maintaining several defenses and attacks simultaneously 450.
  • Danger to allies: A stray wisp of Lorgar’s golden light causes Mortarion intense spiritual pain and knocks him unconscious 310.
  • Incomplete daemon destruction: Lorgar can destroy Valeria’s projection but explicitly cannot yet erase her true Warp essence 563.
  • Loss of self: After embracing his Warp power, Lorgar finds emotions increasingly distant. Anna later warns him against psychic overuse 1066 1155.

Suppression and Psychic Equipment

  • Blackstone — Suppresses psychic and Warp-related abilities. Its fields cut Corax off from Chaos and his shadow powers, leaving him vulnerable to Anna’s Battle Automatons 308 1012.
  • The Emperor’s reforged cross — Generates an anti-psychic field that spares its wielder while disrupting or controlling hostile psychic output. Its rune-covered chains completely suppress Mary’s Alpha-level reserves and sever her Warp connection 328 624.
  • Best’s Warhammer — Its embedded crystal receives concentrated psychic energy, allowing lightning discharge and psychically reinforced armour penetration 447.
  • Psychic Focusing Devices and arrays — Collect and direct energy from multiple psykers into another wielder 912 918.
  • Laer Blade — Contains psychic amplifiers and reservoirs; channels power into attacks that weaken resolve and erode reality. Lorgar initially finds no malicious presence inside it, but a purple psychic thread later enters the blade unnoticed 479 865.
  • Nemesis Blade — Contains an immense, permanently imprisoned mass of hostile psychic energy that resonates with Corax’s Chaos power 768.
  • Lectitio Divinitatus — Copies containing Lorgar’s psychic energy can repel mental intrusion when held while their verses are silently recited 900.
  • Holy Word Army armour — Emperor-inscribed armour weakens a Warp creature, allowing concentrated plasma and melta fire to destroy it 618.

Imperial Regulation

Treatment of Human Psykers

Category Imperial Treatment
Strong enough for service Recruited as Astropaths or sanctioned psykers 17.
Weakest psykers Assigned to the Astronomican, consumed as sustenance for the Emperor, or lobotomized into Servitors 17.
Select individuals Taken to the Choir’s Obsidian Fortress; their fate is unspecified 17.
Tainted psykers Purged and executed before reaching Terra 17.
Uncontrolled psykers Tracked, suppressed, and hunted as potential threats to entire worlds 17.

Word Bearers Policy

Lorgar adopts a position of neither encouraging psychic energy nor banning it entirely 746.

  • Psychic energy is permitted only as a controlled military weapon, serving a defined tactical objective under the highest-level authorization 746.
  • Personal mystical exploration, unrestricted knowledge-seeking, and bargaining with Warp entities fall outside its permitted purpose 746.
  • Librarians are subject to screening, tests of will, loyalty requirements, formal training, and combat authorization procedures 746.
  • Rockefeller and the other commanders are tasked with developing and enforcing the detailed regulations 746.
  • Lorgar proposes an Anti-Daemon Force with specialized knowledge, mental-resistance training, faith-strengthening rituals, and anti-psychic and anti-Warp equipment 746.

The Thousand Sons Controversy

Magnus believes knowledge and psychic power can serve humanity if governed by sufficient wisdom and control. The Emperor nevertheless repeatedly warns against the Thousand Sons’ dependence on Warp power and investigation of forbidden knowledge 609.

Magnus interprets Lorgar’s immense psychic feats—and the psychic protections embedded in the Lectitio Divinitatus—as evidence of unequal treatment. His resentment helps drive his decision to embrace deeper Warp exploration and attempt the Grand Spell on Prospero 868 900 912.

The confrontation exposes both the power and instability of large-scale psychic amplification. Magnus temporarily raises his elite psykers to Alpha level; Lorgar attempts to stop him; and Tzeentch eventually intervenes directly, replenishing Magnus’s power during their clash 916 920.

Notable Quote

“Psychic energy must be used strictly as a military weapon, under fully compliant, absolutely controlled conditions, and only with approval at the highest level.”
— Lorgar, establishing Word Bearers policy 746
