Background / History

Second Legion Commander

Saladin’s homeland has desert tribes whose ancient meditative traditions inform his personal discipline. He recognizes Biberus’s potential while the future Lord Commander is still a slave in a desert-world arena, eventually making him the Second Legion’s highest-ranking officer beneath the Primarch 254 259.

When Saladin first meets Lorgar in person, he greets him warmly and offers a conventional handshake that affirms their equality. Lorgar recognizes in him the bearing of both a desert warrior and a scholar 229.

Campaign Against the Rangdan

Saladin anticipates an ambush near a Mandeville Point and orders maximum fleet readiness before his ships emerge from the Warp. During the subsequent assault on a Rangdan capital ship, he personally intervenes when Company Captain Muras’s boarding force is surrounded 254 256.

After destroying the corridor’s elite defenders, Saladin helps the wounded Muras stand and leads the survivors deeper into the vessel. At its command nexus, he rejects the enemy commander’s ritual challenge and orders his guards to kill it with concentrated bolter fire 257 258.

The shattered enemy sword leaves him with an unexplained sense of “misalignment,” despite showing no unusual energy or psychic traces. Back aboard the Soul of the Sea of Sand, he meditates on humanity’s future and fears that completing the Great Crusade could leave humanity free to turn against itself. He suppresses the thought to preserve his focus and morale 259.

Lorgar privately investigates Saladin because the future he knows contains only an erased blank where Saladin and the Second Legion’s history should be. His examination finds no Chaos taint in Saladin or those around him. He later asks Saladin to accompany him on an operation, fearing that defection to the xenos could explain that historical erasure 260 321.

Rage, Injury, and Mental Crisis

Several weeks after Lorgar’s disappearance, Saladin assembles one hundred thousand Legionaries for another offensive. He defends Lorgar against Takidin’s flattering comparison and urges his commanders to remember humanity’s capacity for cruelty. A tempting whisper repeats his fear that warriors will eventually turn on one another once external enemies are gone 329.

During the assault on the Rangdan Planetary Construct, Saladin sees Luna Wolves commander Moseng use mortal militia as bait and shoot through the survivors. Furious at Moseng’s justification, he smashes his command console and enters the battle himself. His charge becomes increasingly uncontrolled; separated from his followers, he confronts three exceptionally imposing Rangdan figures 330 332 333.

Saladin is subsequently reported gravely wounded. After a week unconscious aboard the Sand Sea Throne, he awakens cold, distant, and apparently unresponsive to his commanders’ affection. He immediately demands a report on the Great Crusade 337.

He orders the offensive resumed despite Biberus’s objections and claims that an Emperor-sent dream has promised approaching victory. Alone during meditation, conflicting voices overwhelm him. Believing he is fighting sand jackals, he actually kills more than twenty attendants with his bare hands, including a trusted personal maid 338.

Break with the Imperium

The massacre divides Saladin’s officers. Biberus invokes Saladin’s former respect for mortal lives, while Abdullah praises the apparent change as decisive leadership. Isolated in his meditation chamber, Saladin is consumed by guilt and hears a persuasive voice portray the Rangdan Federation as peaceful and inclusive, urging him to join it 339 340.

Saladin publicly accepts responsibility for his loss of control but demands an end to discussion of it. He removes Biberus from command and confines him for nearly drawing a weapon against Abdullah, then redirects the Legion toward an offensive alongside the Dark Angels 341.

By his conversation with Hannibal, Saladin is actively coordinating against the Imperium. His plans include placing the Fifth Company aboard the Dark Angels’ flagship, and he mistakenly believes Lorgar might support his undertaking. Hannibal warns him that two members of his Legion have betrayed him 352.

Saladin confronts Craston over helping Biberus and other suspected conspirators escape. Abdullah attempts to assassinate Craston, and Saladin offers the wounded commander forgiveness if he accepts the Legion’s “new ideals.” When Craston instead tries to warn Angron, Saladin stabs him through the back and kills him before the accusation is completed 352 353.

Legion Rebellion

Biberus and Dirham seize the Remembrance of Ashes and openly reject Saladin. Saladin orders Abdullah to eliminate them while continuing the attack on the War Hounds. Their assumption that the War Hounds can be defeated by dismantling a conventional command hierarchy overlooks the Legion’s cohesion and Lotara’s central role 355 359.

The Fifth Great Company launches coordinated sabotage inside the Dark Angels’ Unyielding Truth, while Second Legion ships attack their former allies amid a Rangdan counteroffensive. Lion El’Jonson declares every Second Legion vessel hostile 365.

Angron boards Saladin’s flagship and forces a personal confrontation. Saladin initially gains ground through precise swordsmanship, damages both of Angron’s axes, and tries to recruit him by warning that the Emperor will discard the Primarchs as He did the Thunder Warriors. Angron refuses, declaring his loyalty to Lorgar. Curze intervenes from the shadows, and the ensuing struggle leaves Saladin near death 373 374 375 378.

Sand Awakening and Defeat

Saladin’s near-death awakening transforms the battlefield into golden sand and gives him a regenerated body and an army of constructs. Angron and Curze later report his quicksand, sand soldiers, and ability to command the remains of the fallen to Lorgar 378 399.

Facing Lorgar empowered by the Emperor, Saladin alternates between twin-blade combat, sand restraints, duplicates, and escapes through the ship’s altered environment. Hercules’s purifying cross eventually suppresses his remaining power, allowing Lorgar to drive a greatsword into his shoulder. Saladin nevertheless turns into living sand and escapes through a hull breach to the desert planet below 401 402 403 405.

On the planet, Saladin repeatedly rebuilds a colossal body and nearly kills Lorgar inside a spear-lined sand prison. Lorgar’s awakening white fire destroys the prison and manifests Heroic Spirits, including Craston 409 410.

Craston’s silent refusal to return shakes Saladin’s will. Lorgar exploits the opening, breaks the psychic links sustaining Saladin’s planetary body, and binds the exposed core of his will with sacred fiery chains. Unable to disperse, Saladin is forced back into human form before Lorgar’s burning cross 410.

Appearance

  • Build: Lean and powerful, with close-fitting armour emphasizing his physique 374.
  • Complexion and eyes: Deep olive skin and golden eyes; his early expression is calm and marked by wisdom 254 256 333.
  • Hands: Broad palms, strong knuckles, and numerous small scars 229.
  • Usual clothing: Plain desert robes and practical light armour; during the corridor battle, he wears a dark olive robe 254 257.
  • Later combat attire: Lightweight black-and-desert-coloured Power Armour, a faceplate, and paired curved scimitars 352 374.
  • Awakened form: Flowing sand armour and a newly formed sand scimitar; later manifests a repeatedly reconstructed sand colossus 378 409.

Personality

Early Saladin is courteous, reassuring, and economical in both speech and action. He commands through restrained gestures, assists wounded subordinates personally, and refuses to diminish Lorgar to accept praise. His pragmatism also makes him willing to reject an enemy’s ceremonial duel in favour of immediate concentrated fire 257 258 260 329.

He considers humility and protection of ordinary people essential responsibilities of superior strength. He condemns human oppression rather than treating cruelty as exclusively alien, and Moseng’s expendable use of militia provokes his strongest visible moral outrage 329 330.

His concern for humanity’s future becomes a vulnerability when intrusive voices exploit his doubts and remorse. After his injury, his manner becomes cold and authoritarian; following his rebellion, he uses accusations of disloyalty to silence or eliminate officers who oppose him 338 340 341 352 353.

Saladin still seeks acceptance from former brothers and subordinates. He hopes to recruit Lorgar and Angron, then pleads for Craston’s spirit to return. Craston’s silence undermines his composure at the decisive moment of his final defeat 352 374 410.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship and Unarmed Combat

  • Kills more than five hundred Rangdan elites in minutes with precise scimitar strikes, evasions, and deflections of energy fire 257.
  • Uses psychic-enhanced twin blades, deceptive angles, and attacks on armour gaps against fellow Primarchs 374 401 402.
  • Demonstrates joint locks, redirection, exceptional flexibility, and a throw that slams Angron onto the deck 376.
  • Can be overwhelmed by superior direct force: Emperor-empowered Lorgar breaks through his guard and shatters one scimitar 402.

Psychic Presence and Mental Projection

  • His Primarch presence makes Rangdan elites falter and draws hundreds of attackers away from his Legionaries; this is explicitly not literal time stoppage 256 257.
  • Charges his weapons with golden or sand-coloured psychic energy 256 402.
  • Projects his consciousness into a mental desert to converse with Hannibal 351 352.
  • Conjures six tarot cards and interprets them as conflicting possible futures for Lorgar, rather than a single certain outcome 401.

Sand Transformation and Regeneration

  • Converts metal, masonry, weapons, and bodies into golden sand during his awakening 378.
  • Repairs severe wounds and broken bones, and makes a strike against his neck release sand rather than blood 378.
  • Reconstructs a broken scimitar using sand and metal particles 402.
  • Dissolves into his psychically permeated surroundings to evade lethal attacks, then escapes his flagship as living sand 402 405.
  • Repeatedly rebuilds his planetary colossus from the desert’s vast supply of sand 409.

Constructs and Battlefield Control

  • Creates desert warriors, griffins, beasts, and behemoths from sand 378 409 410.
  • Produces thousands of duplicates that resemble him and carry matching psychic signatures, concealing his true position 403.
  • Uses quicksand vortices, restraints, invasive tendrils, and a sealed spear-lined sphere to immobilize opponents 378 403 409.
  • Turns destroyed duplicates into sensory-disrupting dust clouds 403.
  • Disrupts Curze’s foresight during his awakening and suppresses Lorgar’s healing through sand penetrating his armour 378 409.
  • Can command the remains of the fallen, making additional troops potential puppets rather than a safe advantage against him 399.

Command and Strategy

  • Anticipates ambushes and coordinates fleet fire, boarding operations, and ship capture 254 256 259.
  • Plans with Lion El’Jonson to break an encirclement and seize Xana as a forward command centre 260.
  • Organizes infiltration and a fleet-wide rebellion timed to coincide with Rangdan attacks 352 365.
  • Misjudges Lorgar’s willingness to defect and the War Hounds’ command structure 352 359.

Devotions

  • Develops a non-theistic discipline combining desert tribal meditation with rational introspection 259.
  • Uses it to examine his responsibilities, inner order, and humanity’s future rather than worship a deity 259.
  • The practice fails to restore control after his awakening from injury; intrusive voices and hallucinations overwhelm him during meditation 338 340.

Weaknesses and Counters

  • Lorgar’s purifying flames neutralize psychic sand; continuous energy expenditure can maintain some restraints against them temporarily 403.
  • Hercules’s cross suppresses his sand energy and slows its circulation 405.
  • His regeneration and dispersal depend on psychic links and the surviving core of his will. Lorgar defeats him by severing those links and binding that core 410.
  • The appearance of Craston’s Heroic Spirit destabilizes his will long enough for Lorgar to attack decisively 410.
