Ch. 261Meeting Mortarion
Plot and events
- After discussing a plan, Lorgar leaves and asks Company Captain Saolis to watch the Second Legion’s Primarch, Saladin. Concerned that something is wrong, Lorgar orders Saolis to report any trouble, escape if the Second Legion is compromised, and rescue Saladin if he is trapped.
- Lorgar then travels to the Death Guard flagship, The Endurance, and is escorted through its austere, heavily functional interior by Captain Garro.
- In the command chamber, Lorgar finds Mortarion surrounded by his silent Deathshroud bodyguards. Mortarion acknowledges his arrival.
Character developments and interactions
- Lorgar shows caution and responsibility by preparing for several possible outcomes involving Saladin, while also seeking out Mortarion.
- Saolis accepts Lorgar’s difficult orders without hesitation, balancing the duty to withdraw with the duty to save Saladin.
- Garro is presented as disciplined and direct, guiding Lorgar without ceremony.
- Mortarion appears imposing, exhausted, and severe. His terse greeting establishes the guarded tone of the coming meeting.
- Lorgar and Garro exchange formal, efficient courtesies; Lorgar and Mortarion’s conversation has only just begun.
Themes
- Duty under uncertainty: Lorgar’s orders prepare Saolis for conflicting responsibilities.
- Pragmatism and discipline: The Endurance and its crew reflect the Death Guard’s emphasis on function, endurance, and order.
- Power and unease: Mortarion’s presence and the Deathshroud’s silent watch create a sense of menace and isolation.
