Background / History
Yan grew up as an orphan from humble roots. Hu Liena, also an orphan, initially sympathized with him and considered becoming ordinary friends. She rejected his romantic advances, however, and his continued pursuit eventually destroyed that sympathy 5 9.
At Spirit City Junior Soul Master Academy, Yan leads a team that includes Li Kai and Sun Chuantao. His cultivation and combat experience make the team a major obstacle for Xu Xiaonian's group in the graduation examination 16 18 19.
Personality
Yan is jealous of the attention Hu Liena gives Xu Xiaonian and resentful of the preferential treatment the newcomer receives from the Pope and Elder Ju. He initially attributes that favor to Xu Xiaonian's Holy Angel Family background rather than accepting his exceptional talent 5 19.
His wounded pride becomes vindictive aggression. After Li Kai and Sun Chuantao lose their wager, he strikes both while accusing them of inventing excuses. Once convinced that Xu Xiaonian really possesses extraordinary strength, he accepts a plan to target—and potentially cripple—him during the examination 10.
Despite his hostility, Yan is tactically cautious in combat. He opens the semifinal with defensive protection and avoids relying on a direct contest of strength against Xu Xiaonian 19.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Lord
- Described as a top-tier martial soul 10 16.
- Yan estimates that martial-soul and soul-skill enhancements could bring his strength to roughly three thousand kilograms 10.
- Xu Xiaonian considers his raw strength probably comparable to an ordinary Soul Ancestor's, despite his lower cultivation realm 16.
Second Soul Skill: Granite Rock
- Covers Yan's skin with a layer of rock, forming armor 19.
- Used immediately at the start of the semifinal to protect against Xu Xiaonian's exceptional physical strength 19.
- Cannot prevent his defeat once Xu Xiaonian combines time slowing with Holy Spirit Purcell's attack 20.
Combat Experience
- Yan and his accomplices expect his experience to overcome Xu Xiaonian's limited number of soul skills and short cultivation history 10.
- His team's defensive opening leaves few opportunities for Xu Xiaonian and initially makes even Ghost Douluo uncertain of the outcome 19.
Relationships
- Hu Liena — Unrequited romantic interest. She rejects his advances and becomes openly disgusted when his attempt to pressure her into spending time with him is exposed 5 9.
- Xu Xiaonian — Rival targeted out of jealousy and resentment. Yan plans to exploit the examination rules to injure him, but suffers a devastating defeat instead 10 19 20.
- Li Kai — Teammate and accomplice. Yan supplies him with a century-old spirit herb for the strength-test scheme, then slaps him after its failure 9 10 18.
- Sun Chuantao — Teammate and accomplice. Helps carry out the scheme and recommends exploiting Xu Xiaonian's inexperience during the graduation examination; Yan also strikes him when questioning their defeat 7 10 18.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Strength-Test Scheme
After discovering Hu Liena's repeated visits to Xu Xiaonian, Yan orders Li Kai and Sun Chuantao to make the newcomer suffer a setback in front of her. He supplies Li Kai with a valuable century-old spirit herb to improve his strength and secure the contest 5 7 9.
The scheme fails when Xu Xiaonian records 3,058 strength and 999 talent. The losing wager requires a public claim that Li Kai, Sun Chuantao, and Yan are gay; the resulting campus bulletin humiliates Yan and prompts his revenge plan. The claim is a wager-imposed taunt, not an established fact about his sexuality 8 9 10.
Graduation Examination
Yan's Team draws Nian's Team in the semifinals. Yan's group uses defensive skills and avoids confronting Xu Xiaonian head-on, eventually leaving Yan, Li Kai, and Sun Chuantao against him 16 19.
Yan threatens to leave Xu Xiaonian missing an arm or leg, believing the academy will treat it as a combat accident. Xu Xiaonian responds by revealing his twin martial souls, slowing Yan's thoughts and movements, and unleashing Sacred Shadow—Streaming Light Break. All three opponents are carried from the arena with severe injuries 19 20.
