Ch. 401A Wasted Trip, but Not Entirely
Plot
- Gu Yue carries the mentally regressed Tang Wulin through Dream Valley, warning him not to touch its nightmare motes. When a mote reveals itself as a hostile, ghostly face, she shields him and destroys it with Silver Dragon Breath.
- They spend several days in the valley without finding Ha Luosa or other Holy Spirit Cult leaders. Gu Yue protects the sleeping Tang Wulin and enjoys their unusual quiet intimacy.
- Yun Ming contacts Gu Yue to report that Ha Luosa is with the Ghost Emperor elsewhere, so the expedition has missed its target. Gu Yue considers the trip worthwhile because of her time with Tang Wulin.
- She wakes him by promising grilled fish and carries him out of the valley. During their departure, Tang Wulin praises her beauty and declares that she is his; she warmly agrees.
Character developments and interactions
- Tang Wulin remains childlike, curious, trusting, clingy, and easily distracted. He relies completely on Gu Yue, responds eagerly to the promise of food, and expresses his affection without hesitation.
- Gu Yue shifts between alert, formidable protector and openly tender partner. She keeps Tang Wulin safe, indulges his dependence, and allows herself a rare respite from her heavy responsibilities.
- Yun Ming’s brief report reconnects the intimate interlude to the wider search for Ha Luosa and the Ghost Emperor. Gu Yue responds with composure, then returns her attention to Tang Wulin.
Themes
- Protection and trust: Tang Wulin’s vulnerability makes Gu Yue’s guardianship central to their bond.
- Tenderness amid danger: Their affectionate quiet contrasts with Dream Valley’s threatening supernatural environment.
- Duty and private happiness: Gu Yue balances her responsibilities with the rare comfort of being simply herself with Tang Wulin.
- A journey’s unexpected value: Though the mission fails, the time they share gives the trip personal meaning.
