Background / History

Before Sasuke’s Return

Orochimaru was among the shinobi whom Hanzō named the Sannin. He later belonged to Akatsuki and conducted experiments involving reincarnation, Cursed Seals, cloned Sharingan, and transplanted bloodlines 2 7 46.

During the Konoha Crush, he worked with Baki and killed the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa. The Lord Third sealed the souls of his arms with the Reaper Death Seal, leaving him unable to use ninjutsu. Shortly before the reborn Sasuke reached him, Orochimaru had performed Living Corpse Reincarnation using a test subject and still intended to take Sasuke as his next vessel 2 42.

The Ruined Future

In the original future, Orochimaru and Sasuke became the Shinobi World’s only survivors after Ōtsutsuki Shi Mei’s attack. Orochimaru rescued the critically wounded Sasuke aboard a spacecraft left by Kara. Shi Mei subsequently drained their planet through a God Tree and departed after attaining godhood 1.

During Sasuke’s final ten years, Orochimaru became like family to him. While Sasuke despaired, Orochimaru continued researching methods that might allow him to challenge the gods again. His discoveries included a proposed route to reconstructing Ōtsutsuki power and techniques for controlling the Shinigami 1 5.

Orochimaru used Karasuki to send Sasuke’s soul forty years into the past, carrying a record of his own knowledge and emotions. He concealed that the procedure would destroy him as well as Karasuki, allowing Sasuke to leave believing they might meet again 1 2.

His future research included comparing the Sage of Six Paths’ remains, recovered from the Land of Redaku’s ruins, with a pure-blooded Ōtsutsuki’s genes. He also possessed cloned Sharingan capable of restoring Sasuke’s sight 1.

Jiraiya’s novels influenced his desire to have a child in that life. After inheriting the future’s memories, Orochimaru declines to recreate Mitsuki: he recognizes that a new clone would not be the same person and that burdening it with the purpose of replacing someone lost would be unfair 67 75.

Transformation in the Altered Timeline

The younger Orochimaru initially confronted Sasuke as a prospective vessel. Sasuke exploited his confidence in his immortal body to implant the future self’s chakra sphere. Experiencing the consequences of his former ambitions caused Orochimaru to abandon that relationship and accept Sasuke as his guiding partner 2.

His first priorities became restoring his arms, earning Kabuto’s informed cooperation, and building Sasuke’s foundation for becoming an Ōtsutsuki. After capturing the Shinigami, he transferred Hashirama Senju’s chakra into Sasuke through a redesigned Cursed Seal 3 5.

As the group expands, Orochimaru undertakes Itachi’s treatment, organizes White Zetsu cloning, and reconciles with Jiraiya. He describes his identity as a blend of past and future: the inherited memories and feelings belong to him, but he must still live his own life rather than merely repeat his future self’s existence 62 67 75.

Following the Ten Battles Plan’s completion, he transplants Fugaku’s eyes into Sasuke and visits Shikkotsu Forest to disclose the threat facing the world. His subsequent struggle with Inari Ōkami leaves him gravely wounded, but the awakening of Ikukishin enables his recovery and contributes to freeing Sasuke from Ayekashi 261 268 291 309.

Appearance

Orochimaru has long hair and slit-pupiled eyes. His original-future self is described with purple-gold eyes and a low, hoarse voice 1 2.

  • Serpentine transformations: Can replace his legs with a snake’s tail and manifest an enormous eight-headed serpent body 2.
  • Shinigami unsealed form: Develops symmetrical horns, dark-gray eyes, and a “卍”-shaped forehead mark 5.
  • Unsealed attire and markings: Wears a seemingly illusory white haori, flickering black inscriptions, ancient prayer beads, a sword, and a bell-shaped ritual implement 5.
  • Hundred-Release Seal: Bears a seal on his chest that he exposes when overcoming Kashyapa’s suppression techniques 110.
  • Nine-Tails manifestation: Can surround himself with a Nine-Tails chakra cloak and manifest the beast’s immense golden form 110 288.

Personality

Before receiving his future memories, Orochimaru is manipulative and confident enough in his bodily immortality to underestimate Sasuke. He exploits Sasuke’s desire for revenge and regards him as a reincarnation vessel. The inherited memories expose the dead end of those ambitions, producing humility, affection, and a willingness to follow Sasuke’s judgment 2.

His changed outlook is especially clear in his treatment of subordinates. He allows Kabuto to question him, values Kabuto’s life above satisfying his curiosity, and insists that Karin choose whether to inherit the Evil God’s eyes. Nevertheless, he remains willing to arrange lethal trials, sacrifice enemies, and use personal grief as leverage when advancing the group’s plans 3 5 24 26 27 28.

His curiosity and inventiveness survive this transformation. He seeks Sasori’s unrevealed weapon, treats divine beings as powers that can be sealed and repurposed, and argues that Sasuke’s resourcefulness matters more than inherited strength alone 10 15 27.

He increasingly distinguishes scientific possibility from ethical justification. His refusal to recreate Mitsuki accompanies his decision to replace human experimental subjects with cloned White Zetsu. He also explicitly respects Itachi’s choice about accepting an eye transplant 62 67.

His reconciliation with Jiraiya reveals greater vulnerability and self-awareness. Prompted by Itachi’s regret over failing to speak honestly with Sasuke, Orochimaru chooses to explain himself to his old friend. He credits their shared past with helping shape his changed self, while retaining enough mischief to end their heartfelt conversation by preparing “Thousand Years of Death” 75.

Orochimaru treats Sasuke’s development as the faction’s overriding strategic priority. He postpones Shikamaru’s approach and reinforcements for Jiraiya until the Ten Battles are finished. This pragmatism coexists with genuine concern: he urges Jiraiya not to confront Kara prematurely and becomes furious when Inari’s deception prevents him from attending to Sasuke’s approaching Ayekashi 242 282 283 288.

Abilities & Skills

Serpentine Techniques and Bodily Survival

  • Shedding technique: Expels a fresh body from his mouth after Sasuke pierces his chest 2. He later uses the same survival method after Inari Anko tears into his abdomen 286.
  • Myriad Snake Formation: Releases countless snakes carrying Kusanagi Swords from their mouths 2.
  • Eight Branches Technique: Produces an eight-headed serpent that sheds its Amaterasu-burning skin 2.
  • Snake hands: Extends serpents from his sleeves to restrain Karin and capture White Zetsu 24 45.
  • Living Corpse Reincarnation: Transfers into replacement bodies. His recent use prevents him from relying on it to escape the Shinigami ritual’s price 2 3 5.
  • Cursed Seal consciousness: Each Cursed Seal carries his will. Sasuke releases a separate Orochimaru consciousness from Anko’s seal through the Evil Releasing Method, using Jugo’s transformed flesh 287.
  • Cursed Seal Clone: The released consciousness can communicate with the group and sense the original’s general location, but cannot precisely locate him within Shikkotsu Forest’s Dharma Realm. It warns that it may lack the original’s strength to contain Sasuke’s Ayekashi 287 291.
  • Eight Branches Rampage: His serpent heads wield golden Susanoo blades while his shoulder snakes activate Amaterasu Ōmikami. The heads immediately regenerate after being severed 290.

Soul Concealment and Shinigami Sealing

  • Soul Concealment Technique: Hides his soul so the Shinigami cannot locate and consume it 5.
  • Six Paths Shinigami Coffin Seal: Draws the Shinigami into his body, making him its jinchūriki 5.
  • Hokage abilities: Can access the powers of the four Hokage within the Shinigami, including the Second and Fourth Hokage’s Flying Thunder God Technique 5 8.
  • Limit: Maintaining the Shinigami’s unsealed power strains him; his stated maximum is five minutes 6.
  • Earthbound-spirit suppression: Uses the Shinigami’s power to subdue Danzo’s resentful spirit, extract its memories, and end its rampage on Blue Moon Island 95.
  • Cursed Beads: Contact in his unsealed mode can attach the Shinigami’s prayer beads to an opponent. Inari cannot remove them by force; they support the soul-sealing struggle 290.
  • Soul-Cutting Blade: During the struggle with Inari Ōkami, the blade severs both hands of the god’s spirit, which are drawn into the Great Serpent’s belly with the prayer beads 291.
  • Ikukishin: The Shinigami’s reversal body awakens through the Seven-Star Lamp Formation. Orochimaru can reverse this transformation and release souls from its belly, although he seeks Sasuke’s approval before releasing Hiruzen and Danzo 309 314.

Nine-Tails Power and Suppression Resistance

The Shinigami’s contents give Orochimaru access to the other half of the Nine-Tails, making him a potential target for Obito’s Ten-Tails revival plan 192 200.

  • Nine-Tails Mode: Manifests a golden chakra cloak and the Nine-Tails’ immense form, using the latter to catch Kashyapa’s Susanoo sword 110.
  • Hundred-Release Seal: Breaks Kashyapa’s combined Adamantine Sealing Chains and Wood Release suppression, restoring Orochimaru’s chakra cloak 110.
  • Large-scale offense: Manifests Kurama’s golden form and gathers dark chakra before its head when confronting Inari Kakashi 288.

White Cursed Seal Development

Orochimaru redesigns Sasuke’s Cursed Seal of Heaven into a vessel for gradually absorbing Hashirama’s complete power rather than merely borrowing an external chakra supply 5 6 9.

  • Power transfer: Uses a white snake to deliver Hashirama’s chakra into Sasuke’s seal 5.
  • Preserved identity: Intends Sasuke to gain Hashirama’s full power while remaining an Uchiha 9.
  • Progressive absorption: Released power becomes Sasuke’s own, increasing his capacity to release and absorb further power 6 49.
  • Adaptive Modification: Adds environmental adaptation through enhancements including Soft Body Modification. Underwater, State Two develops functional gills and a dorsal fin 50.
  • Permanent extensions: States that his added white cursed arts will remain after Sasuke fully absorbs the seal’s core 50.
  • Snake Transformation: Adaptive Modification enables Sasuke to escape a dissolving body by emerging from a split in his back during the battle with Itachi 56.
  • Kekkei Genkai Harmonization: State Three permits releases formed by combining any two basic chakra natures, giving Sasuke additional options beyond Wood Release 73.
  • State Four: Gives Sasuke new ocular traits, including the Byakugan, during the Five Kage Summit battle. Its release temporarily suppresses his Sharingan abilities 135 137 139.
  • Absorption indicator: One eye returning from cursed-seal whiteness to Sasuke’s Sharingan indicates that he has absorbed approximately half the seal’s power 205.
  • Space-time foundation: Absorbing the seal supplies the ocular powers needed to combine Sharingan, Byakugan, and Rinnegan for Yomotsu Hirasaka. Orochimaru is surprised that Sasuke can activate it before awakening Six-Tomoe Rinnegan in both eyes 310.

Genetic and Dōjutsu Research

  • Ōtsutsuki reconstruction theory: Proposes combining Six Paths power with genetic segments missing from the Sage of Six Paths’ lineage, specifically those associated with the Ten-Tails and Hamura 1.
  • Ocular evolution theory: Believes Sasuke’s prematurely awakened Rinnegan interrupted a transitional stage and restricted his eventual potential 1.
  • Sharingan cloning: Uses Uchiha Ke’s right Mangekyō as the template for Shin’s cloned eyes; creates Shin’s early clones with Kabuto 7.
  • Hashirama-cell vessels: Creates a miniature being to sustain Ke’s right eye and later directs Kabuto to receive the eye and its cells 7 8.
  • Uzumaki research: Attributes the clan’s vitality and affinity for tailed-beast power to inherited genes from the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path 34.
  • Bloodline Transference: Develops a forbidden technique intended to make Itachi and Shisui brothers by blood, allowing Itachi to transplant Shisui’s eyes and awaken an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. The technique is still described as awaiting completion when he outlines the plan 102.
  • Shikotsumyaku analysis: Explains that the bloodline controls bone shape, growth, quantity, hardness, and microscopic bone energy. He warns that even the Byakugan cannot detect the latter 219.
  • Autonomous Blaze Release analysis: Identifies Sasuke’s instinctive black-flame defense against Isshiki and compares its autonomous operation to Gaara’s sand 418.
  • Final reconstruction requirement: After Sasuke obtains Isshiki’s Ten-Tails and awakens both Rinnegan, identifies the Tenseigan as the remaining element necessary for becoming a true Ōtsutsuki 430 431.

Kagami’s Eyes and Ocular Techniques

  • Amaterasu Ōmikami: Activates Kagami’s Mangekyō through a white snake emerging from his sleeve after returning from his search for Kashyapa 112.
  • Distributed ocular use: Several small snakes activate the Mangekyō together during Eight Branches Rampage, enabling the serpent heads to wield golden Susanoo blades 290.
  • Izanami: Uses a snake’s left eye to place Tsunade under Izanami during her preparation for Shikkotsu Forest’s Stillness Sage Art 277.
  • Ocular restoration: A second snake’s right eye restores the first snake’s sight after Izanami. Orochimaru also offers to restore Kabuto’s blinded right eye and later restores Sasuke’s ocular power during the confrontation with Obito 112 277 353.

Sealing Innovations

  • Hundredfold Unbinding Talisman: Breaks the concealment technique over Kakuzu’s buried gold vault 35.
  • Improved Yang Seal: Adapts an ancient Uzumaki formula to refine external nature chakra into Yin Release chakra for Sasuke’s eyes 36 37.
  • Yang Seal limitation: The Dragon Vein-powered version provides a finite reserve that cannot replenish itself. Its immediate purpose is to preserve Sasuke’s vision until he obtains Fugaku’s eyes 41.
  • Yin-Yang Severance Cursed Seal: Cuts a captured White Zetsu clone’s telepathic connection to the others, despite that connection being maintained through the Demonic Statue 45.

Evil God Capture

  • Ritual knowledge: Finds documents in Jashin Cult ruins describing how sacrificing a devotee can summon the Evil God 27.
  • Death: Evil Sealing Method: Uses his own seal, the Shinigami’s power, and its ritual bell to bind the deity into a pair of Ketsuryūgan 27.
  • Result: The eyes become a “shrine” through which the god’s sacrificial power can be wielded 27.
  • Wielder requirements: Selects Karin for her Uzumaki constitution and regeneration, but leaves acceptance to her 27 28 34.
  • Spiritual allegiance restriction: His connection to the Shinigami disqualifies him from awakening the Feathered Serpent God’s painting through sincere prostrations 112.

Sensory and Reanimation Techniques

  • Enhanced sensing: In Shinigami Unbound Mode, locates Karin despite her concealed chakra, twenty kilometers from the destroyed Northern Hideout 19.
  • White Zetsu detection: Possesses a researched method for sensing these products of Infinite Tsukuyomi 45.
  • Impure World Reincarnation: Prepares to reanimate Gaara using White Zetsu as a sacrifice, though Chiyo’s arrival provides another solution 45 46.
  • Reaper-based survival test: Attempts a ritual using Suigetsu’s and Jugo’s biological samples. Its failure leads the group to conclude they are still alive 20.
  • Telescope Technique: Observes events remotely, including Obito’s capture of Nagato 91.
  • Yamato’s reanimation: Uses Impure World Reincarnation at the cloning base after Naruto’s abduction 78.
  • Soul medical ninjutsu: Reanimates Nagato and heals his impaired legs through treatment directed at his soul 139.
  • Flying Thunder God signals: Can detect chakra channelled into his marked kunai and teleport to the holder, as demonstrated when Kabuto summons him and Sasuke from thousands of miles away 99.
  • Dimensional limitation: His available space-time technique cannot retrieve Nagato directly from Obito’s Kamui dimension, prompting alternative plans 91.

Cloning and Medical Research

  • Rapid-cloning equipment: Provides blueprints and funding for laboratory machinery delivered before the Fifth Battle 67.
  • White Zetsu mass production: Plans to clone the specimen captured during Gaara’s rescue for experimentation, war material, and an independent intelligence network 67.
  • White Zetsu theory: Attributes most specimens’ weakness to the poor quality of Kaguya’s God Tree and an unsuitable cultivation method, identifying the special White Zetsu “Tobi” as a successful exception 67.
  • Replacement limb: Gives Kabuto a White Zetsu hand to replace his severed one 78.
  • Rejuvenation Pill: Creates a pink pill admired by the White Snake Sage as an achievement she had long failed to accomplish herself 108.
  • Itachi’s treatment plan: Arranges a request for Ryūchi Cave’s rare Sage Medicine, followed by suitable Hashirama-cell implantation to improve Itachi’s constitution and perfect his Shikkotsu Forest Sage Mode 102.
  • Fugaku’s eye transplant: Implants Fugaku’s eyes into the sleeping Sasuke after the Ten Battles Plan succeeds 261.

Living Susanoo Experimentation

Orochimaru and Sasuke connect an extract from the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path to Susanoo through Earth Grudge Fear. The resulting core develops chakra nodes and an independent chakra network throughout the construct, making it a form of life controlled by Sasuke’s ocular power rather than merely a chakra technique 242.

  • Research contribution: Technologically processes the statue’s extract into a core and installs it within Sasuke’s Susanoo 251.
  • Expanded potential: The transformation strengthens Susanoo’s fundamental power and supports Sasuke’s planned Composite Bow 242.
  • Limits of his foresight: Admits that he did not plan how Sasuke would unlock the core’s abilities and wants to understand Sasuke’s innovations himself 251.
  • Extra Form development: The core enhances Susanoo’s Extra Form into forms comparable to the Demonic Statue, providing a separate power that Sasuke can absorb as a chakra mode 333.

Equipment / Items

  • Karasuki — Time-traveling turtle secretly held by the original-future Orochimaru. Sending only a soul into its younger body transports one person to an unpredictable moment and destroys the device 1.
  • Chakra memory sphere — Contains his future knowledge, memories, and emotions; travels within Sasuke’s soul before being implanted into his younger self 1 2.
  • Shinigami mask — Retrieved from the Uzumaki Mask Hall to summon the Shinigami; shatters when Orochimaru captures it 4 5.
  • Shinigami ritual bell — Used to suppress the Evil God during its sealing 27. Also used to provoke Inari into the close-range attack through which Orochimaru attaches the Cursed Beads 290.
  • Uchiha Ke’s left Mangekyō Sharingan — Retained by Orochimaru; he describes its Blade Reversal ability as more combat-effective than the right eye’s 7.

  • Demonic Statue core — An extract processed into the living core of Sasuke’s enhanced Susanoo 242 251.

Relationships

  • Sasuke Uchiha — Former intended vessel, student, and enemy; becomes family to the original-future Orochimaru. In the altered timeline, Orochimaru follows his lead and regards their research partnership as mutually fulfilling 1 2 50. He protects Sasuke’s training schedule, supports his ocular evolution, and helps free him from Ayekashi. Sasuke’s urgent efforts to save the wounded Orochimaru, including offering his own cells for treatment, demonstrate the depth of their reciprocal attachment 242 261 291 309.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Trusted subordinate whose loyalty Orochimaru rebuilds through transparency and proof. He encourages Kabuto’s potential and gives him Ke’s right Mangekyō rather than keeping it himself 3 5 8. Later provides a replacement hand, directs him toward Ryūchi Cave’s senjutsu, and promises to restore his blinded eye. The White Zetsu intelligence network is intended partly to reduce Kabuto’s exhausting travel duties 67 78 99 102 112.
  • Karin — Subordinate valued for her sensory abilities. He enables her acquisition of the Ketsuryūgan while defending her right to make that decision independently 28 34.
  • Sasori — Former rival over competing notions of eternity. Orochimaru arranges his battle with Sasuke, then honors his final request and declines to disturb his resting soul through reanimation 11 17.
  • Kakuzu — Target chosen partly for his wealth. Orochimaru secures his fortune by offering the possibility—not a guarantee—of reunion with his murdered family once Sasuke awakens the Rinnegan 20 26.
  • Hidan — Targeted for the Four Pillars God Plan; ultimately sacrificed to summon and capture the Evil God 20 27.
  • Uchiha Shin — Former experimental subject whose cloned eyes derive from Ke’s Mangekyō. Orochimaru defers to Sasuke on how to recover the original eye 7.
  • Jugo — Voluntary experimental subject seeking control over his murderous impulses. His reluctance to oppose Orochimaru stems from Kimimaro’s admiration for him 29. His transformed flesh later helps release Orochimaru’s consciousness from Anko’s seal, and Orochimaru considers sending him back into Akatsuki with Suigetsu for a covert rescue mission 96 287.
  • Suigetsu Hōzuki — Former subordinate who denies having genuine loyalty to him and joins Obito after capture 29. After returning, he theatrically claims to have remained loyal while infiltrating Akatsuki. Orochimaru proposes exploiting his former ties to gain access to Obito’s dimension and rescue Nagato 95 96.
  • Baki, Temari, and Kankuro — Former collaborator and the children of Rasa, respectively. His murder of Rasa remains a source of hatred despite his expressed regret and later assistance 42 43.
  • Obito Uchiha — Strategic adversary whose conflict with Nagato informs Orochimaru’s planning. He promises to intervene if Obito disrupts Sasuke’s second battle 21 22. Obito later targets Orochimaru’s Nine-Tails power, while Orochimaru deliberately leaves Kinkaku and Ginkaku available as an alternative to discourage an attack during Sasuke’s final trial 192 200 242.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Becomes an ally after joining Blue Moon Island. Itachi apologizes for distrusting Orochimaru and thanks him for caring for Sasuke. Orochimaru respects his autonomy and devises a treatment and ocular-evolution plan involving Sage Medicine, Hashirama cells, Shisui’s remains, and Bloodline Transference 62 102.
  • Jiraiya — Old friend and fellow Sannin. Their reunion resolves Jiraiya’s frustration that someone else brought about Orochimaru’s change; Orochimaru acknowledges Jiraiya’s influence on his future life and shares the truth of Sasuke’s return 75. He worries about Jiraiya’s premature investigation of Kara, while Jiraiya entrusts him with the central task of supporting Sasuke 236 282 283.
  • Tsunade — Fellow Sannin whom he informs of Sasuke’s mission at Shikkotsu Forest. He later uses Izanami during her preparation for the Stillness Sage Art 268 272 277.
  • Mitsuki — Child from the original future whom Orochimaru refuses to recreate as a substitute, accepting that cloning cannot restore the same individual 67.
  • Kashyapa Senju / Kāye — Hashirama’s son and Tsunade’s father, whom Orochimaru tracks down in pursuit of Kagami’s stolen eyes. He defeats Kashyapa’s combined Senju, Uzumaki, and Uchiha powers and confronts the fear and avoidance behind his departure from Konoha 95 96 110 112.
  • Danzo Shimura — Former collaborator and later source of intelligence about Kagami’s murder. Orochimaru captures his soul to protect Shisui’s eye, subdues his earthbound manifestation, and eventually releases him from Ikukishin with Sasuke’s permission 66 95 314.
  • Konan — Former Akatsuki acquaintance. He returns Yahiko’s Deva Path body to her and provides the marked kunai through which she can contact the group 91.
  • White Snake Sage — Recipient of his Rejuvenation Pill and a powerful potential ally. She admires his scientific achievement and acknowledges that he possesses secrets even she cannot see through 108 238.
  • Katsuyu — Approached respectfully at Shikkotsu Forest, where Orochimaru explains the existential threat and helps connect the sages’ ancient history with Shi Mei 268 272.
  • Hashirama Senju — Source of the power Orochimaru transfers into Sasuke. Hashirama’s soul later guides the search for the wounded Orochimaru and draws Nine-Tails chakra from the Shinigami to heal his chest wound 5 291.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Inari Ōkami’s vessel during the struggle with Orochimaru. After his rescue, Kakashi helps activate the Seven-Star Lamp Formation and learns from Orochimaru why Sasuke has acted as he has 288 309.
  • Inari Ōkami — Divine adversary who deceives Orochimaru for ten days and fights him through Kakashi. Orochimaru seals the god’s spiritual hands, but suffers severe injuries; Inari leaves promising revenge 288 290 291.
  • Shikamaru Nara — Seeks contact through Sunagakure’s ANBU. Orochimaru delays the request until the Ten Battles conclude, then delegates the meeting to Kabuto 242 261 262.
  • Jigen / Isshiki Ōtsutsuki — A threat Orochimaru considers too dangerous to approach before Sasuke awakens the Rinnegan. Jigen later orders Amado to investigate Orochimaru and personally demands to see him 282 397 413.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Ten Battles Plan

Orochimaru designs a one-year program to accelerate Sasuke’s absorption of Hashirama’s power. He rejects a faster schedule because it would cause irreversible damage and limit Sasuke’s future growth 6.

Phase / Battle Opponent or Activity Orochimaru’s Purpose
Initial two months Continuous White Cursed Seal release in daily life Adaptation before absorption 6.
First battle Sasori, at Tenchi Bridge Exploits a gap in Sasuke’s knowledge and investigates Sasori’s unrevealed final scroll 10 11.
Second battle Kakuzu and Hidan Provides another lethal trial while pursuing Kakuzu’s wealth and Hidan’s unusual power 20 22.
Third battle Kisame, at Heavenly Gate Gorge Tests Sasuke against an opponent whose strength increases with the power available to absorb 47 49.
Fourth battle Itachi Advances Sasuke’s development and creates an opportunity for the brothers to resolve their estrangement 60 62.
Fifth battle Jiraiya, in the Land of Whirlpools Tests Sasuke against Sage Mode and its taijutsu, exposing gaps in his experience; the encounter also permits Orochimaru’s reunion with Jiraiya 69 70 74 75.
Sixth battle Nagato / Pain Continues the program against Akatsuki’s leader; Obito captures Nagato after the battle 78 99.
Seventh battle The Five Kage Summit Sasuke unlocks State Four while confronting the Five Kage 126 139.
Eighth battle Reanimated Izuna and four Kage Tests Sasuke against powerful historical opponents. Sasuke prepares techniques suited to their strongest fields to honor them rather than treat them as mere training props 171 173.
Ninth battle Obito Exploits Obito’s pursuit of Orochimaru’s Nine-Tails power to continue Sasuke’s growth; approximately half of the White Cursed Seal is absorbed during the struggle 200 205.
Tenth battle Madara inhabiting Naruto’s body Culminates the year-long plan in a final contest of Sasuke’s combined powers against Madara 254 261.
Scheduling principle One extreme battle each month after initial adaptation Initially leaves later opponents unfixed and selects them according to Sasuke’s growth; the program is ultimately completed successfully 6 261.

During the first two matches, Orochimaru prevents concerned allies from intervening, trusting Sasuke to survive through the White Cursed Seal. His calm appearance conceals anxiety during the second battle 13 24 25.

He continues acting as an observer and interpreter throughout the later trials, explaining Sasuke’s combined techniques while recognizing dangers such as the Demonic Statue’s soul-absorbing chakra dragons. He does not claim ownership of all Sasuke’s breakthroughs, admitting that some exceed his own planning 171 202 203 251.

Nothing is permitted to displace the final battle from its priority, including Shikamaru’s request for contact or the news that Obito has captured Tsunade. After the program succeeds, Orochimaru transplants Fugaku’s eyes into Sasuke and temporarily leaves Kabuto in charge of his care 242 261.

Akatsuki Retaliation and Relocation

  • Sasori’s death prompts Pain to order Orochimaru’s execution and an attack on the Northern Hideout 18.
  • Orochimaru accompanies Sasuke to the ruins and locates Karin, enabling her rescue 19.
  • He closes the old hideout network and dismisses most peripheral personnel, concentrating the group’s work on Blue Moon Island 20.
  • The loss of Kakuzu’s fortune compromises Akatsuki’s funding and its Tailed Beast Weapons project 30 31.
  • He establishes plans for White Zetsu cloning to replace reliance on human experimental subjects and expand the faction’s intelligence network 67.

Land of Wind Expedition

  • Retrieves Kakuzu’s gold and directs the group toward Rōran as a solution to Sasuke’s deteriorating eyesight 34 35.
  • Coordinates a three-day Dragon Vein operation: Kabuto suppresses the chakra with Wood Release, Karin watches for intruders, and Sasuke refines the Yang Seal 37 41.
  • Orders treatment for Baki after Karin’s confrontation with the Sand team, then explains the intended visit to Chiyo 42.
  • Supports Sasuke’s decision to rescue Gaara, captures White Zetsu, and prepares reanimation as a fallback. Chiyo instead revives Gaara through Life Reincarnation 43 45 46.

Itachi’s Recovery and Ryūchi Cave

After Itachi joins the island’s residents, Orochimaru proposes curing his illness and preparing him for an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan using Shisui’s eyes. He outlines the need for Shisui’s remains, the recovery of the right eye from Danzo, and Hashirama-cell support 62.

During Danzo’s final confrontation, Orochimaru asks about Kagami Uchiha’s suspicious death. The later capture of Danzo’s earthbound spirit reveals that Kashyapa stole Kagami’s eyes, giving Orochimaru a separate research and retrieval objective 66 95 96.

He escorts Sasuke, Kabuto, and Itachi to Ryūchi Cave’s hidden approach, marks it with Flying Thunder God, and supplies a gift for the White Snake Sage. While Sasuke seeks Sage Medicine and Kabuto undergoes senjutsu trials, Orochimaru searches for Kashyapa. His return with Kagami’s Mangekyō opens a means of restoring Kabuto’s sight 102 110 112.

Naruto’s Abduction and the Kamui Retrieval Plan

Orochimaru convenes the faction without Sasuke after Black Zetsu abducts Naruto. He reasons that Naruto is probably safe temporarily because the Nine-Tails must be sealed last, rejects a risky Madara-resurrection theory, and considers whether Black Zetsu could instead use Asura’s reincarnation in Kaguya’s revival 78.

He assigns Jiraiya, Itachi, Kabuto, and Karin to investigate while taking Sasuke to the Sixth Battle. Sasuke recognizes that information is being withheld but agrees to wait until after the fight 78.

When Obito captures Nagato, Orochimaru retrieves Yahiko’s body for Konan and acknowledges that his own technique cannot extract Nagato from Kamui. After an unsuccessful confrontation in Konoha, he proposes returning Suigetsu and Jugo to Akatsuki under a cover associated with the Eight-Tails hunt. The real objective is to enter Obito’s dimension, rescue Nagato, and recover Fugaku’s eyes 91 93 96.

Nagato obtains Fugaku’s eyes but dies protecting Suigetsu. Orochimaru subsequently reanimates him and repairs his legs through soul medical ninjutsu 137 139.

Shikkotsu Forest and the Sages’ Alliance

Orochimaru visits Katsuyu after arranging notice through Jiraiya. He tells Tsunade that Sasuke returned through time and that the resulting changes are creating an era in which shinobi and sages can cooperate against the world’s destruction 268.

Katsuyu reveals the sages’ ancestral connection to Firm Continent Country and its destruction by an Ōtsutsuki. Orochimaru connects this history with his knowledge of Shi Mei, recognizing that the ancient attacker’s description may identify the same enemy 272.

He remains involved in strengthening the faction’s potential defenders, using Izanami on Tsunade as part of her preparation for the Stillness Sage Art. At the same time, he warns Jiraiya that approaching Isshiki before Sasuke awakens the Rinnegan is too dangerous 277 282 283.

Inari Ōkami and Ikukishin

Inari Ōkami deceives Orochimaru through an illusion for ten days, initially leading him to believe that Anko is the possessed vessel. Sasuke’s release of Orochimaru’s consciousness from Anko’s Cursed Seal exposes the deception; the real opponent is Inari acting through Kakashi 287 288.

Orochimaru uses the ritual bell to provoke a direct attack, accepts a chest wound to attach the Cursed Beads, and maintains a Reaper Death Seal struggle while unleashing Eight Branches Rampage. The Soul-Cutting Blade ultimately severs Inari’s spiritual hands, but Orochimaru and Kakashi both collapse afterward 290 291.

His original body is expected to remain unconscious for three days. Sasuke, Kabuto, and his Cursed Seal Clone search Shikkotsu Forest’s Dharma Realm, where Hashirama’s soul guides them to the injured pair. Kabuto treats Orochimaru, and Hashirama uses Nine-Tails chakra drawn through the Shinigami to heal the chest wound 291.

Kakashi later assists Hashirama in activating the Seven-Star Lamp Formation. The awakening of Ikukishin enables Orochimaru to awaken and helps sever Sasuke’s Ayekashi. Orochimaru retains control over the reversal body and later releases Hiruzen and Danzo for Tobirama’s questioning 309 314.

Preparations Against the Ōtsutsuki

Orochimaru recognizes Sasuke’s plan to cultivate a God Tree using Isshiki’s Ten-Tails and captured Ōtsutsuki as the culmination of a strategy he had anticipated. Sasuke intends to control the timing of the clan’s arrival through Danzo’s Ox-Head Heavenly King rather than simply destroy it 315.

Jigen’s interest makes Orochimaru an explicit target: he orders Amado to collect information about him and later tells Jiraiya that seeing Orochimaru is his principal reason for coming 397 413.

During Sasuke’s confrontation with Isshiki, Orochimaru explains the newly awakened Autonomous Blaze Release. After Sasuke acquires Isshiki’s Ten-Tails and both Rinnegan, he identifies the Tenseigan as the final missing element in the planned Ōtsutsuki reconstruction. He also argues that speculation about Shi Mei’s future-predicting ability should not derail their preparations, since the Great Toad Sage’s prophecy still points to the coming war 418 430 431.
