Background / History

Kirigakure and Orochimaru

Suigetsu escaped from the Bloody Mist Village before Orochimaru captured him for his abilities. He regarded their arrangement as mutually useful: staying with Orochimaru offered comfort and protection from pursuit, but did not earn his loyalty. His older brother, Hozuki Mangetsu, had belonged to the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist and could wield all seven blades 29 30.

Suigetsu later reveals that the Second Mizukage, Hozuki Gengetsu, is his great-grandfather 171.

Northern Hideout attack

When Deidara and the masked Obito attacked the Northern Hideout, Karin ordered Suigetsu to flee with Jugo. He initially wanted to escape alone, agreeing only after she warned that losing Orochimaru’s important test subject would bring consequences. Obito pursued and imprisoned both men in his space-time dimension, where Suigetsu spent several days in darkness and nearly starved 20 29.

Their disappearing chakra led Sasuke’s group to fear they were dead. Orochimaru’s failed attempt to summon their souls instead indicated that they were alive, probably confined within Obito’s dimension 19 20.

Recruitment into Akatsuki

Obito released the pair after Kakuzu and Hidan’s deaths and offered them positions as replacements. Suigetsu immediately accepted to protect himself. Despite his objections, Obito then gave him a Sharingan and made him part of the plan to restrain Jugo 29 30.

Suigetsu requested a suitable ninja sword. Obito instead presented Mangetsu’s lost sword-summoning scroll, prompting an emotional pledge of allegiance. Privately, however, Suigetsu reasoned that Mangetsu would never have entrusted such a precious possession to a friend. He began to suspect that Obito—known to him as Tobi or “Madara”—had killed his brother, and resolved to remain close enough to confront him 30 32.

Pain’s admission test required the newcomers to touch his robe. Although Suigetsu and Jugo failed, their coordinated attacks and Suigetsu’s final Water Gun, which grazed Pain’s cheek, earned them acceptance. Suigetsu became Three of Akatsuki, replacing Hidan, and the pair received the assignment to capture Shukaku 31 32 33.

Capture of Gaara

Obito transported the pair directly into Sunagakure and reassured Suigetsu that the village’s leadership would not defend Gaara. During the battle, Suigetsu infiltrated Gaara’s defensive sand with his liquefied body, creating an opening for Jugo. He then used his Sharingan to stop Jugo from killing their target, preserving the mission’s requirement to bring Gaara back alive 37 38.

Shukaku’s emergence overwhelmed both attackers, and Suigetsu decided they should retreat. After Gaara saved the village at the risk of his life, Suigetsu seized him and fled with Jugo. They delivered him to Akatsuki’s cave and participated in the three-day extraction of Shukaku, which left Gaara without signs of life 39 40 45.

Sasuke’s intervention

While the pair waited for Zetsu to dispose of Gaara’s body, Sasuke broke into the cave. He restrained them with Wood Release and Susanoo, used lightning to prevent Suigetsu from liquefying, and rendered both unconscious through their Sharingan. Sasuke also stopped Kankuro from killing them, citing their shared history 45.

Sasuke brought them to Blue Moon Island and explained that he had shown them fragments of the future. More than twenty days later, both remained asleep; Akatsuki’s tailed-beast hunt continued without them 46 47.

Kisame later questioned Sasuke about their disappearance before fighting him at Heavenly Gate Gorge. Sasuke denied knowing what had happened to them 48.

Awakening on Blue Moon Island

Suigetsu and Jugo awaken after five months under an immersive genjutsu replaying memories from Sasuke’s previous life. Although the events had not happened to Suigetsu in this life, he felt as though he had experienced them personally. Remembering Sasuke’s intervention at the extraction cave, he wanted to question him about the dream 94.

While exploring the island, Suigetsu follows mysterious white flames into a clearing and encounters a scarred, one-eyed man lamenting his lost Sharingan and failed ambition to become Hokage. The man appears behind him and identifies Suigetsu’s right eye as the Sharingan he wants to reclaim 94.

The pursuer is Danzo’s earthbound spirit. Suigetsu flees on a stream of water and clings to Orochimaru’s leg for protection when Sasuke and Orochimaru return. Orochimaru eventually subdues Danzo with the Reaper’s power and lays his soul to rest 95.

Afterward, Suigetsu theatrically claims that joining Akatsuki had been an act of loyal infiltration undertaken for Orochimaru’s sake. His exaggerated tears flood the tatami, prompting Sasuke to tell him to stop using Water Release indoors. He also admits that the dream Sasuke showed him kept him from attacking Sasuke outright 96.

Return to Akatsuki as an infiltrator

Orochimaru proposes returning Suigetsu and Jugo to Akatsuki, exploiting its shortage of personnel and need for help hunting the Eight-Tails. Their real mission is to enter Obito’s dimension, rescue Nagato, and retrieve Fugaku’s eyes for Sasuke. Sasuke recognizes the danger to both men but accepts the strategic reasoning 96 114.

On the journey, Suigetsu complains about being sent back into danger. He tells Jugo that Sasuke’s dream helped him abandon his desire for revenge and prefer a peaceful life. He acknowledges that killing Obito would not restore Mangetsu and that the families of people he killed while working for Orochimaru could likewise seek revenge against him 97.

Obito intercepts them near the Land of Fire’s border and suspects that Orochimaru has sent them as spies. Suigetsu panics, forgets their prepared explanation, and vomits under the pressure. Jugo supplies the cover story, while Sasuke’s two-layer genjutsu safeguard makes Suigetsu repeat that they were imprisoned by Sasuke for six months and escaped while their captors were away. Obito’s repeated genjutsu testing overwhelms Suigetsu, who faints 97.

Obito allows them to rejoin Akatsuki and assigns them to assist Kisame against the Eight-Tails, privately intending to kill them after they have served their purpose. During the infiltration, Suigetsu befriends the spiral-faced White Zetsu known as Tobi, partly as a survival strategy 97 114.

Eight-Tails hunt and confrontation with Obito

During the Eight-Tails hunt, Jugo suffers wounds severe enough that he asks Suigetsu to end his suffering. Suigetsu instead lifts him and prepares to activate Orochimaru’s Flying Thunder God kunai to seek help, insisting that Sasuke would approve if the dream reflected their true bond. Kisame intervenes and uses Samehada to help Jugo 119.

When Killer B fires a Tailed Beast Bomb, Kisame evades and leaves Suigetsu exposed. Suigetsu survives because the explosion opens an underground water vein, allowing him to merge with the resulting surge. He discovers that his right eye possesses Bishamonten, a dōjutsu that brings extraordinary good fortune 120.

Using the enormous water supply, Suigetsu strikes the Eight-Tails with Water Release: Shield Helmet and drives it into the Uchiha Flame Formation, burning its back. When Killer B prepares another Tailed Beast Bomb at close range, Suigetsu forces it down the beast’s throat with Super Water Gun. The internal explosion ends the transformation and leaves B unconscious 120.

As Obito approaches B, Suigetsu attacks him with Shibuki, but the sword passes through Obito’s intangible body. Obito grabs Suigetsu’s shoulder and begins drawing him into his dimension. The confrontation develops into Sasuke and Orochimaru’s intervention; Orochimaru obtains Fugaku’s eyes, while Suigetsu explicitly identifies Obito as Mangetsu’s killer and challenges the idea that a change of heart alone should absolve his crimes. Sasuke promises to give him an answer 120 121.

Life with Sasuke’s group

Suigetsu resumes life among Blue Moon Island’s residents. His treasured ninja blades decorate the south wall of their quarters. He continues to tease Karin about Sasuke, provoking a beating that splits his head apart before it reforms through Hydrification 139 169.

He watches recordings and live observations of major battles with the others. Madara’s recorded display of power leaves him sweating, and during Sasuke’s Eighth Battle he reacts with surprise to Orochimaru’s explanation of Sasuke’s modified Susanoo. Watching Gengetsu’s antics, he reveals their family relationship after Karin compares the former Mizukage’s irritating personality to his 167 171.

During Sasuke’s later struggle against Obito and the White Zetsu army, Suigetsu doubts that recovering one Sharingan will be enough to change the battle. Orochimaru urges him to keep watching as Sasuke prepares the Super Heavenly Kaguya Arrow 205.

Suigetsu also helps test Sasuke’s Susanoo: Living Body Mode. He attacks with Shibuki, an enlarged Hydrification Arm, and his right Mangekyō eye, but Sasuke catches the blade barehanded. The ensuing explosion hurls Suigetsu a hundred meters away, where he turns into a puddle, while Sasuke remains unharmed 280.

Defense against the Ten-Tails

When explosive energy from a Ten-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb threatens the group, Suigetsu creates a water monster rather than stand by and let the blast engulf them. Tobirama reinforces it with chakra molded to suit the Hozuki Clan’s properties, increasing its size to that of a tailed beast 327.

The shock wave begins tearing the water monster apart despite Suigetsu’s efforts. Mito then extends thirty-six Adamantine Sealing Chains through it, anchoring and stabilizing the defense 327.

Mangetsu’s return and later battles

After a battle involving reanimated shinobi, Sasuke notices Suigetsu staring toward his brother Mangetsu 308.

Later, Obito’s escalating Rinnegan power leaves Suigetsu frightened and doubtful that he can be defeated. On Blue Moon Island, Suigetsu and Karin investigate a disturbance together and discover Kabuto’s unexpected return with his head restored. The island’s dead are then revived through Rinne Rebirth, including Mangetsu. Orochimaru interprets Mangetsu’s resurrection as a deliberate effort to give Suigetsu hope and restore a strong ally 345 359.

Suigetsu remains present for subsequent demonstrations and battles. During the older Kage’s test of Sasuke, he remarks on their failure to question references to a previous life. When Obito unleashes a God Tree-powered attack against Jigen, Suigetsu fears that it could destroy the island. He later questions how Sasuke can instantly defend against Isshiki’s black rods, leading Orochimaru to explain Autonomous Blaze Release 398 416 418.

Appearance

  • White hair, noted when he flees Danzo’s spirit 95.
  • Pointed teeth, visible when he grins 32.
  • Three-tomoe Sharingan in his right eye, transplanted by Obito and later advanced to a Mangekyō Sharingan 30 280.
  • Akatsuki robe worn after his admission to the organization 37.
  • “Three” ring on his left index finger, marking his Akatsuki position 37.

Personality

Suigetsu is outspoken, irreverent, and strongly motivated by self-preservation. He flatters dangerous people when cornered and changes his behavior quickly when he notices surveillance: after spotting a White Zetsu clone, he turns criticism of Obito into a loud declaration of gratitude. His bravado also exceeds his confidence; a promise to stake his head on capturing Shukaku leaves him frightened once the mission begins 29 30 37.

Pride can make him reckless, as shown by his opening attack on Pain with the dangerous Shibuki. Under pressure, however, he becomes analytical and persistent. His attachment to Mangetsu gives him a reason to endure Akatsuki’s dangers beyond immediate survival, while cooperation with Jugo develops from reluctant necessity into effective battlefield teamwork 32 33.

Sasuke’s immersive genjutsu changes his attitude toward violence and revenge. Suigetsu says that he would rather live peacefully than continue killing, recognizing that vengeance cannot bring his brother back and that his own victims’ families have equal grounds to resent him. This does not erase his anger at Obito: he later condemns Mangetsu’s murder and rejects automatic forgiveness based solely on repentance 97 121.

His comic displays of loyalty remain opportunistic. He claims to have infiltrated Akatsuki out of devotion to Orochimaru, producing exaggerated Water Release tears to support the performance, and befriends Tobi while aware that his life could be taken at any moment. Severe intimidation can still overwhelm him, as Obito’s interrogation leaves him trembling, vomiting, and unable to recall his cover story 96 97 114.

Despite his complaints and fear, he increasingly acts to protect others. He refuses Jugo’s request to be killed after a grievous injury and risks activating their emergency contact to save him. He later forms a water defense against the Ten-Tails’ explosive energy because he cannot simply watch it swallow everyone 119 327.

Abilities & Skills

Hydrification Technique

  • Turns his body into liquid, greatly reducing the impact of Pain’s Shinra Tensei 33.
  • Escapes Gaara’s sand restraint by permeating it, then contaminates the sand used to form Gaara’s defensive shield 38.
  • Travels on a stream of water while fleeing Danzo’s spirit 95.
  • Reforms his head after Karin splits it apart with a punch 139.
  • Merges with water from an underground vein opened by a Tailed Beast Bomb, surviving the blast and gaining access to an enormous water supply 120.
  • Turns into a puddle after being thrown by the explosion from his own Shibuki attack during Sasuke’s Living Body Mode test 280.
  • Limits: Pain’s chakra-disrupting Black Rod prevents liquefaction. Sasuke likewise uses lightning to paralyze him and block the transformation 33 45.

Great Water Arm Technique

  • Enlarges his arms to strengthen Shibuki’s combined slash-and-explosion attacks 32 38.
  • Uses an enlarged Hydrification Arm to carry Gaara during the escape from Sunagakure 39.
  • Combines Hydrification Arm, Shibuki, and his right Mangekyō eye in a powerful attack used to test Sasuke’s Susanoo: Living Body Mode 280.

Sharingan

  • Provides detailed perception and helps him anticipate Gaara’s sand spikes while attacking 30 38.
  • Lets him partially imitate Mangetsu’s delicate control of Nuibari’s steel wire 33.
  • Uses the Hypnotic Eye for the first time to suppress Jugo’s rampage and halt his Cursed Seal transformation 38.
  • Limits: The first Hypnotic Eye use causes pain in his transplanted eye. Against Pain, seeing an incoming Black Rod does not give him enough time to evade it 33 38.
  • Obito discusses the possibility of Mangekyō evolution when granting him the eye. Suigetsu later discovers Bishamonten, and his right eye is explicitly described as a Mangekyō during the Living Body Mode test 30 120 280.

Bishamonten

  • A right-eye dōjutsu associated with extraordinary good fortune, discovered during the Eight-Tails hunt 120.
  • Its favorable effects help reverse the battle’s course, including Suigetsu’s survival through the newly exposed underground water vein and his effective use of the resulting water supply 120.
  • Obito recognizes that the apparent misfortune affecting Killer B may instead result from Suigetsu’s good-fortune ability 120.
  • The discovery changes Suigetsu’s opinion of his transplant from disgust to enthusiastic appreciation of the Sharingan and the Uchiha 120.

Swordsmanship and Blade Techniques

  • Has memorized the properties of all seven Mist swords despite lacking experience wielding them 32.
  • Combines Shibuki with enlarged arms for powerful explosive strikes 32 38.
  • Uses Explosive Blade Art: Happare Shishi to spread Shibuki’s explosive scroll around a target; the technique also demolishes Gaara’s training-ground wall 33 38.
  • Uses Longsword Ninja Art: Earth Spider Stitch to raise concealed Nuibari wires into a low web around Pain’s feet, followed by an attack from the buried blade 33.
  • Attacks Obito with Shibuki after the Eight-Tails’ defeat, but the blade passes through Obito’s intangible body 120.
  • Limits: Nuibari requires delicate wire control that he admits cannot match Mangetsu’s on his first attempt. Shibuki’s explosions can also injure an unskilled wielder 32 33.

Water Gun

  • Fires the Hozuki Clan’s secret Water Gun technique from a hand shaped like a gun 33.
  • His desperate final shot grazes Pain’s cheek during the admission test, contributing to Pain’s decision to accept the pair 33.
  • Uses Super Water Gun, a compressed water attack, to force a prepared Tailed Beast Bomb down the Eight-Tails’ throat. Its internal detonation ends Killer B’s transformation and knocks him unconscious 120.

Shield Helmet and Water Monster Defense

  • Uses Water Release: Shield Helmet to control the enormous body of water connected to an underground vein and ram the Eight-Tails into the Uchiha Flame Formation 120.
  • Forms a water monster to shield others from the explosive energy of a Ten-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb 327.
  • Tobirama’s compatible chakra increases the monster to tailed-beast size, while Mito’s thirty-six Adamantine Sealing Chains stabilize it when the shock wave begins breaking it apart 327.
  • Limits: Suigetsu cannot maintain the reinforced monster against the shock wave without further support from Mito 327.

Tactical Analysis

  • Infers that Pain’s attraction and repulsion cannot be used without restriction, then identifies Shinra Tensei’s five-second interval 32 33.
  • Conceals Nuibari’s wire preparations behind Shibuki’s explosions 33.
  • Distinguishes Gaara’s ordinary battlefield sand from the chakra-rich sand in his gourd and turns that knowledge into a plan to weaken the Sand Shield 38.
  • Coordinates Jugo’s strength with his own traps and mobility, including an attempt to reach Pain during his ability’s downtime 33.
  • Uses Killer B’s own prepared Tailed Beast Bomb as the decisive weapon against him rather than meeting its power directly 120.

Infiltration and Genjutsu Safeguards

  • Returns to Akatsuki as part of a covert operation to rescue Nagato and obtain Fugaku’s eyes from Obito’s dimension 96 114.
  • Uses a cover story that he and Jugo escaped six months of imprisonment by Sasuke 97.
  • Sasuke places a two-layer genjutsu safeguard on him, causing him to repeat the prepared false explanation during Obito’s Sharingan interrogation. This protection is supplied by Sasuke, not a technique independently developed by Suigetsu 97.
  • Limits: Under Obito’s threats, Suigetsu forgets the cover story; repeated genjutsu testing eventually makes him faint 97.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Mangetsu’s Ninja Blade Summoning Scroll — Given to him by Obito. Contains Kabutowari, Exploding Blade Shibuki, and Nuibari 30 32.
  • Exploding Blade Shibuki — An enormous double-sided blade combining a cutting edge with an explosive scroll. Supports ordinary slashes, explosive slashes, and attacks using the scroll; its blast range makes mishandling dangerous 32.
  • Longsword Nuibari — A slender, needle-like sword attached to sharp steel wire, used for concealed binding and piercing attacks 33.
  • Akatsuki “Three” ring — Worn on his left index finger 37.
  • Flying Thunder God kunai — Given to him by Orochimaru for the infiltration operation. He prepares to channel chakra into it to seek help for the critically injured Jugo 119.
  • Displayed ninja blades — His treasured blades hang on the south wall of the group’s Blue Moon Island quarters 169.

Relationships

  • Hozuki Mangetsu — Older brother and the only person Suigetsu says he could rely on. His legacy shapes Suigetsu’s swordsmanship ambitions and suspicion of Tobi. Suigetsu later explicitly identifies Obito as Mangetsu’s killer, sees his reanimated brother after a battle, and benefits from Mangetsu’s eventual revival through Rinne Rebirth. Orochimaru interprets that revival as an effort to restore Suigetsu’s hope 30 32 33 121 308 359.
  • Hozuki Gengetsu — Great-grandfather and the Second Mizukage. Suigetsu reveals their relationship while observing Gengetsu’s reanimated battle against Sasuke; Karin notes their similarly irritating personalities 171.
  • Jugo — Akatsuki partner. They openly deny being friends, but defend one another and coordinate effectively; Suigetsu also serves as a Sharingan-based safeguard against Jugo’s loss of control. They later infiltrate Akatsuki together, and Suigetsu refuses to kill the grievously wounded Jugo, instead trying to summon help 29 32 33 38 97 114 119.
  • Obito / Tobi / “Madara” — Captor, recruiter, and benefactor. Suigetsu outwardly pledges loyalty while privately suspecting him of Mangetsu’s murder. He later returns as an infiltrator, survives Obito’s interrogation through Sasuke’s safeguards, and explicitly accuses Obito of killing Mangetsu before condemning the idea that repentance alone should absolve him. Obito regards Suigetsu and Jugo as expendable and intends to kill them after the Eight-Tails mission 29 30 32 97 120 121.
  • Orochimaru — Former captor and employer. Suigetsu describes their relationship as mutual exploitation rather than loyalty. After returning to Blue Moon Island, he seeks Orochimaru’s protection from Danzo and performs an exaggerated declaration of devotion. Orochimaru then sends him back to Akatsuki on a dangerous covert mission 29 95 96 97.
  • Karin — Fellow Northern Hideout resident. Her threat forces him to take Jugo with him during the evacuation. Their later relationship remains marked by teasing and violent comic retaliation, though they also investigate Kabuto’s unexpected return together 20 139 359.
  • Pain — Akatsuki leader and admission examiner. Accepts Suigetsu despite defeating him, recognizing the pair’s persistence and teamwork 31 32 33.
  • Nagato — A principal rescue target of Suigetsu and Jugo’s infiltration mission into Obito’s dimension. Later joins the allies testing Sasuke’s Living Body Mode 96 114 280.
  • Kisame Hoshigaki — Fellow Akatsuki member whom Suigetsu teases about borrowing Samehada. Kisame later praises his successful debut. They cooperate against the Eight-Tails, and Kisame intervenes to save the wounded Jugo, although he also abandons Suigetsu to evade a Tailed Beast Bomb and later moves to defend Obito 33 40 119 120 121.
  • Tobi, the spiral-faced White Zetsu — Becomes Suigetsu’s friend during the infiltration. Their lively, irreverent dispositions make them similar, while Suigetsu’s friendliness also serves his instinct for survival. This Tobi is distinct from Obito’s masked persona 114.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Their connection is clarified through immersive memories from Sasuke’s previous life. Sasuke forcibly removes him from Akatsuki’s cave, protects him from Kankuro, and shows him fragments of that life. The experience changes Suigetsu’s outlook, although he remains openly antagonistic at times. Sasuke prepares safeguards for his infiltration, worries about his safety, and promises an answer to his objections concerning Obito. Suigetsu later fights alongside Sasuke’s allies and helps test his new powers 45 46 94 96 97 118 119 121 280 327.
  • Gaara — Target of his first Akatsuki mission. Suigetsu helps capture him and later expresses pity after Shukaku’s extraction 38 39 45.
  • Killer B — Opponent during the Eight-Tails hunt. Suigetsu plays a decisive role in defeating his tailed-beast transformation by forcing B’s own Tailed Beast Bomb back down his throat 119 120.
  • Danzo Shimura — Encounters Suigetsu as an earthbound spirit on Blue Moon Island and pursues him for his Sharingan, forcing Suigetsu to seek protection from Orochimaru 94 95.
  • Tobirama Senju and Mito Uzumaki — Reinforce Suigetsu’s water monster defense against the shock wave of a Ten-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb with compatible chakra and Adamantine Sealing Chains respectively 327.
