A short while later, the group arrived at the entrance to the Green Bamboo Gambling House.
The gambling house was bustling, the clatter of dice mingling with cheers and angry curses. The stench of cheap yellow wine, sweat, and foul feet assaulted their noses.
Jiang Yue straightened her constable's uniform and strode inside. Li Feng and dozens of other constables followed close behind, swiftly spreading out to secure every corner of the gambling house.
"Routine inspection by the City Guard Office! Quiet, all of you! Hands on the tables! Anyone who moves will be killed without mercy!"
Constable Chen bellowed.
The noisy gambling house fell silent in an instant. A few gamblers, their faces flushed from drinking, looked displeased and were about to speak, but the sight of the constables with Constable Sabers at their waists made them shrink back and obediently move toward the corners.
Several Regular Constables wielding Water-and-Fire Batons kept herding the crowd toward the corners.
"Still gambling?"
"Move toward the middle! Both hands on the tables!"
Jiang Yue and Constable Chen watched the inspection with composed expressions.
"Officer, I'm the steward of this gambling house."
A slightly portly middle-aged man heard the commotion and hurried out. Approaching Jiang Yue, he said with a genial smile, "May I ask your esteemed name? What brings you to our humble establishment to investigate today?"
"How dare you! You don't even recognize our newly appointed Constable Jiang? What kind of steward are you?"
Li Feng suddenly spoke up.
Constable Jiang had been serving as Chief Constable here for nearly half a year now. She should have more or less familiarized herself with the office's affairs, and another small achievement would probably be enough to get her promoted to Deputy Constable Director.
