Flesh-Training Perfection 31 Confirmed as already attained at age 21; the breakthrough itself is not shown. She expects to enter Sinew Training within another year or two, but no subsequent cultivation breakthrough is documented.

Background

Jiang Yue comes from an aristocratic Inner City family and takes an Outer City appointment to build her official credentials. Jiang Wan, a family-trained maid, grew up and practiced martial arts alongside her. After Jiang Yue becomes Deputy Constable Director, the family sends Jiang Wan to help with administration and intelligence analysis 14 70 71.

Her appointment places her over Lin Yanqiu’s former subordinates while Lin is incapacitated by serious injuries. As an outsider rising quickly through the office, Jiang Yue considers a loyal personal faction essential to securing her position 14 31.

Appearance

  • Features: Cold yet striking; her appearance in the moonlight is compared to a celestial fairy from the Moon Palace 27.
  • Chief Constable uniform: A crisp, tailored blue constable uniform 14 27.
  • Everyday martial attire: Described as cool and efficient while reviewing case files 39.
  • Deputy Constable Director uniform: Wears a new uniform appropriate to her promoted rank 70.
  • Raid attire: A Dark Xuan Outfit, with her long hair tied high 77.

Personality

Jiang Yue maintains a stern, unapproachable public manner and expects obedience from her subordinates. She enforces recruitment standards immediately after taking office, but is also quick to preserve appearances: when she realizes Li Feng is qualified to remain, she turns an intended public reprimand into lavish praise 14 15 30.

She is ambitious and politically calculating. She pursues Liu Wu alone to monopolize the merit of his capture, then uses favors and career opportunities to cultivate Li Feng’s loyalty. Her interest in him combines appreciation for his character with the belief that his poverty and late start will keep him from becoming her equal or rival 27 31.

Her strictness does not prevent generosity. Moved by Li Feng’s willingness to sacrifice his reward for Lin Yanqiu’s treatment, she agrees to obtain the medicine without taking his savings. She later distributes bounty money among the constables according to their contributions and refuses Steward Zhang’s attempted bribe during a genuine criminal investigation 31 63 67.

Jiang Yue prefers direct action to painstaking administration. Complex files and scattered investigative clues exhaust her, making Jiang Wan’s assistance particularly valuable. Beneath her official composure, she enjoys flattery, laughs at Li Feng’s jokes, and reacts strongly to the stench of a prisoner retrieved from a cesspit 66 70 71.

Abilities & Skills

Swordsmanship and Combat

  • Overwhelms Liu Wu with dense, continuous sword attacks aimed at his vital acupuncture points, injuring his ribs 27.
  • Uses a martial artist’s imposing aura to intimidate protesting white runners 15.
  • Moves swiftly and quietly enough to reach Li Feng from behind before he notices her approach 65.
  • Deliberately conceals the full extent of her cultivation 65.

Tactical Preparation and Tracking

  • Coats her sword with Qi-Dissolving Powder before pursuing Liu Wu, weakening him through the wounds she inflicts 27 28.
  • Follows Liu Wu’s blood trail to Li Feng’s courtyard and correctly deduces that he has climbed over the wall 27 28.
  • Uses meditation to suppress the effects of Liu Wu’s aphrodisiac powder. The drug is not fully eliminated, and immediate, intense combat would remain dangerous 27.

Cultivation Knowledge and Instruction

  • Explains the orthodox body-tempering sequence: skin grinding, flesh training, tendon transformation, and bone forging 30.
  • Recognizes Li Feng’s Blade Force and identifies his comparatively weak physique as a limitation despite his exceptional technique 28 30.
  • Advises that coarse hemp becomes less effective after entry-level skin grinding and stops working at minor accomplishment, when practitioners normally switch to sand and gravel 39.
  • Warns that using gravel prematurely can cause lasting injuries and requires expensive medicine 39.

Command and Political Judgment

  • Organizes gambling-house searches into separate teams and uses the threat of criminal charges to secure cooperation 63 66.
  • Delegates the covert investigation to Li Feng on Jiang Wan’s recommendation, valuing his familiarity with poorer Outer City neighborhoods 71.
  • Seeks the Constable Commander’s authorization before a major raid, both to follow procedure and to prevent Zhou Tong from exploiting possible casualties 76.
  • Commands five Chief Constables and over a hundred Regular Constables during the assault on the cult’s base 77.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Sword — Her principal weapon during the pursuit of Liu Wu 27.
  • Qi-Dissolving Powder — Purchased from the black market and applied to her sword. It enters through wounds, spreads faster during strenuous activity, and progressively robs a martial artist of strength without being inherently fatal 27.
  • Family-inherited Skin-Grinding Method — A top-tier method she offers Li Feng instead of his monetary reward; described as safer and more effective than ordinary methods 30 31.
  • Iron Robe Skin-Grinding Method — The City Guard Office’s standard method, which she ultimately gives Li Feng. She distinguishes it from her superior family method and notes the hidden injuries suffered by older practitioners 31.
  • Black Jade Bone-Molding Paste — Obtains this restricted Inner City medicine for Lin Yanqiu. Its later arrival helps Lin recover ordinary use of her hand, though she must avoid heavy lifting 31 37.

Relationships

  • Li Feng — Subordinate, protégé, and loyal supporter. She supplies cultivation instruction, medicine for his sister-in-law, and promotion support; later trusts him with covert investigation and publicly credits his intelligence to support a future Chief Constable appointment 31 39 71 78.
  • Jiang Wan — Childhood companion and family-appointed aide. Her administrative and intelligence training complements Jiang Yue’s preference for direct combat 70 71.
  • Lin Yanqiu — Predecessor as Chief Constable. Jiang initially challenges the arrangements made under Lin, but later obtains medicine for her injured right hand at Li Feng’s request 14 31 37.
  • Constable Chen — Experienced colleague and intermediary. He prevents her from mistakenly dismissing Li Feng and later looks after him at her request 14 31 39.
  • Liu Wu — Wanted fugitive whose capture provides the merit Jiang Yue seeks for rapid promotion. She wounds and poisons him before Li Feng completes his capture 27 28 31.
  • Zhang Qiang — Imprisoned after drunkenly harassing her. At Li Feng’s request, she agrees to release him after another month in prison 20 22 31.
  • Zhou Tong — Rival Deputy Constable Director, hostile to her rapid rise. He hopes casualties during the cult raid will give him grounds to attack her leadership 76 78.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Taking Over Lin Yanqiu’s Duties

Jiang Yue begins her appointment by removing temporary white runners who have not reached Qi-Blood First Stage. Her attempt to single out Li Feng rests on outdated information about his lack of cultivation. Constable Chen discreetly corrects her, allowing her to retain him and save face through public praise. Her reforms leave the office noticeably stricter 14 15 20.

Liu Wu’s Capture and Li Feng’s Patronage

After announcing Liu Wu’s 400-tael bounty, Jiang Yue pursues him alone. She dominates their fight, but his aphrodisiac powder briefly interrupts the chase. Her poisoned blade continues weakening him after he escapes, contributing to his defeat in Li Feng and Lin Yanqiu’s courtyard 26 27 28.

Jiang takes custody of Liu Wu and claims the official credit, while promising to compensate Li Feng. During their subsequent meeting, she offers either the bounty or her family’s Skin-Grinding Method. Li Feng instead requests medicine for Lin Yanqiu, prompting Jiang to obtain it, waive his savings, and give him the office’s Iron Robe method. He pledges loyalty in return 28 30 31.

She subsequently provides training advice and promises a Regular Constable appointment. Li Feng’s promotion is formally announced later, citing his cultivation and role in Liu Wu’s capture 39 50.

Green Bamboo Gambling House Investigation

Jiang Yue leads a search for Black Lotus Cult members at the Green Bamboo Gambling House and refuses its steward’s attempted payoff. During the operation, she notices that Li Feng is understating his combat ability but chooses not to expose him 63 65.

After the suspects are identified, she grants Li Feng the silver found on the dead men and 200 taels from the combined bounty. The remaining 300 taels are allocated among the participating constables 67.

Promotion and the Black Lotus Cult Raid

Within half a year of arriving in the Outer City, Jiang Yue has become Deputy Constable Director. The promotion brings administrative responsibilities she finds difficult, prompting her family to send Jiang Wan as an aide 70.

Li Feng’s covert investigation uncovers the cult’s underground base and its plans to raise a Black Lotus Rat King. Jiang takes the potential danger seriously and obtains authorization for an assault. Before departure, she publicly credits Li Feng’s intelligence, intending to make a later promotion easier 71 76 77 78.

Her force overwhelms the first underground level’s defenders. Their weakness leads Jiang Yue and Jiang Wan to suspect expendable decoys, with the more serious threat still waiting below 78.
