Shisui froze.
Across from him, Jin Uchiha was seething, his Susanoo already raised, while Shisui's mind was still struggling to replay what had just happened.
He soon realized where the problem lay.
His attitude just now had indeed been far too friendly. They were supposed to be enemies, yet he had acted as though he had just reunited with family. Nothing about that looked like a confrontation.
Shisui's expression slowly darkened. He steadied his breathing and looked up to meet Jin's gaze.
"Jin, you've gone too far."
"The Uchiha have never truly been able to become part of Konoha because our clansmen are too arrogant and have too little regard for the rules."
"Now we're willing to humble ourselves and coexist with the village under Lord Hokage's guidance. Only then will the Uchiha have a chance to become a true part of Konoha and live in peace alongside everyone else."
"Lord Hokage has already promised me that he'll help the Uchiha integrate into the village."
"So, Jin, stop."
His voice grew colder, and sorrow crept across his face.
"Did Madara Uchiha's actions back then not show you where the Uchiha would end up? All you're doing now is dragging the entire clan toward its doom."
"I, Shisui Uchiha, am an inheritor of the will of fire. I will never stand by and watch you lead the Uchiha into ruin!"
His words rang out with such conviction that even Shisui almost believed them.
He had no choice. For the moment, he had pushed the ideas Yan had taught him out of his mind. Now he was judging the situation through his old way of thinking again. That change in perspective had, instead, immediately given him the right words to say.
Yashiro, Setsuna, and the others in the courtyard seized their chance.
