Background / History

Shisui and Jin played together as children because Jin’s parents were followers of Shisui’s grandfather, Kagami. Shisui graduated early during his third year at the academy and became absorbed in missions for the clan and village. After Jin’s parents died, the two lost contact for years 5.

When Shisui finally visited Jin, he discovered that children associated with Kagami’s former faction had been neglected and mistreated. He took Jin’s hardship personally and promised to obtain justice. His appeals to Fugaku and Hiruzen led to promises of clan resources, back payments, and village compensation 5 6 7 10.

Appearance

  • Wears clothing embroidered with the Uchiha clan’s flame-shaped fan and carries a tachi at his waist 17.
  • His activated three-tomoe Sharingan is blood-red 49.
  • After returning from later missions, he appears thinner but remains energetic, with a steady expression in his black eyes 243.

Personality

Shisui is gentle, courteous, and protective, but injustice can provoke intense anger. His concern for Jin extends beyond apologies: he seeks compensation, supplies equipment, offers training, and risks disclosing classified information to improve Jin’s chances of surviving war 5 10 14 17.

His loyalty to friends is unusually strong. After knowing Aya for only three days, he commits to helping her despite the potential consequences for his own future. When confronted by all Seven Ninja Swordsmen, he believes he might escape alone but cannot bring himself to abandon his teammates 47.

Initially, Shisui reveres Hiruzen and treats the Will of Fire as a reliable guide to relations between the Uchiha and Konoha. Jin changes his outlook by asking him to examine power, resources, and self-interest rather than demanding agreement. Shisui eventually distrusts Hiruzen’s faction without abandoning his desire to protect both the clan and the village 7 37 190.

His approachable manner also conceals considerable pride. Jin regards him as deeply stubborn about his identity as an Uchiha genius and Kagami’s descendant. Shisui nevertheless recognizes his own limitations: factional bargaining overwhelms him, and he prefers carrying out plans to designing them 110 189 207.

Abilities & Skills

Body Flicker Technique

  • Moves fast enough that few opponents can keep up, although his speed is explicitly below Flying Thunder God 48.
  • Uses rapid repositioning to attack Raiga Kurosuki from behind and pin Fuguki Suikazan in combat 48 49.
  • Carries Kazama during the pursuit of the fleeing swordsmen 49.
  • Uses Body Flicker to return rapidly from the front to Konoha for his undercover assignment 186 189.
  • Learned the technique without joining ANBU; the text notes that great clans have access to such techniques independently 48.

Uchiha-Style Swordsmanship

  • Combines a tachi with Body Flicker for extremely fast close-range attacks 48.
  • Forces Raiga to make a narrowly successful block, creating the opening Jin uses to kill him 48.
  • Keeps Fuguki under pressure with his three-tomoe Sharingan and speed; Samehada prevents him from ending the fight immediately 49.
  • Ultimately kills Fuguki rather than accepting his surrender 49.

Sharingan and Ocular Training

  • Possesses a three-tomoe Sharingan before his documented Mangekyō awakening 5 49.
  • Adopts Jin’s explanation that the Sharingan’s power is tied to Yin Release rather than an inherent Uchiha curse 56 57.
  • Practices the Visualization Method—mentally reconstructing an ordinary object in precise detail—and later reports considerable growth in ocular power 56 149.
  • Jin initially invents the method without knowing whether it works; Shisui’s later report provides evidence of benefits for him 56 149.

Kotoamatsukami

  • Can silently alter another person’s will 243.
  • Has a lengthy cooldown, making each use valuable; Jin avoids asking Shisui to employ it casually 243.
  • Its danger prompts Jin to forbid disclosure of its true function during Shisui’s infiltration of Hiruzen’s faction 149 179.
  • By the Kirigakure investigation, its exceptional power is known within the Jonin Meeting’s inner circle 242.

Susanoo

  • Manifests a towering first-form construct during his public confrontation with Jin 208 211.
  • Participates in a staged exchange whose attacks chiefly strike the surrounding forest, destroying trees and breaking the ground 208.
  • Privately admits that he cannot match Jin and asks him to hold back 208.

Intelligence and Covert Operations

  • Performs a rehearsed pledge of loyalty to Hiruzen while remaining aligned with Jin and Kazama 186 189.
  • Recruits Uchiha dissatisfied with Jin, using his Mangekyō as proof that he can oppose him 204.
  • Monitors Mei Terumi’s investigation and traces a suppressed medical report concerning Yagura’s condition 244.
  • Maintains Ninja Crows that Jin recommends Itachi use to request help 128.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Tachi — Carried at his waist and used with Uchiha-style swordsmanship 17 48.
  • Ninja Crows — Available as a communication channel between Itachi and Jin 128.

Relationships

  • Jin Uchiha / Yan Uchiha — Childhood friend whom Shisui treats as a younger brother. His kindness helps draw Jin into protecting the Uchiha; their later apparent feud is a coordinated deception 5 14 133 189 208.
  • Kagami Uchiha — Grandfather. Kagami’s legacy connects Shisui to both Jin’s family and the Hokage faction 5 179 186.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Younger clansman with whom he shares a warm bond. Itachi seeks his help during Jin’s teasing, and Shisui’s crows provide a means of contacting Jin 6 60 128.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Initially his most trusted authority figure; later the target of his undercover allegiance. Hiruzen supplies patronage while arranging surveillance and seeking to use Shisui as a combat asset 7 186 187 214 223 236.
  • Fugaku Uchiha — Clan leader who responds to his appeal over Jin’s mistreatment. Fugaku later learns of his covert role and formally establishes him as head of the Uchiha Branch Family 6 189 213.
  • Kazama Nara — Teammate and strategist who prepares his loyalty speech and advises him on making his return to Konoha convincing 186 189.
  • Aya Hyuga — Teammate and friend whom he refuses to abandon. Their squad’s later separation leaves Aya hoping for a reunion 47 239.
  • Setsuna and Yashiro Uchiha — Dissident elders who rally behind his Mangekyō while intending to use him as a figurehead and enforcer 204 207.
  • Inoichi Yamanaka — ANBU colleague. Jin expects cooperation to remain possible as long as Shisui respects the Yamanaka clan’s interests 240.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Reconnecting with Jin

Shisui’s renewed friendship gives Jin access to resources the clan previously denied him. He delivers three scrolls containing basic supplies worth roughly five million ryo, an ancestral sword and swordsmanship, and Izanagi and Izanami. He also provides Chain Pendant Armor before Jin’s deployment and warns that the inexperienced contingent is being sent to stall the Hidden Mist at severe risk 14 17.

His protection prompts Jin to reveal that he killed Yoshio and his companions—an unusually direct act of trust from someone determined to conceal his strength 17.

Hidden Mist Campaign

Shisui leads an advance group toward Jin’s exhausted survivors when Konoha’s main force arrives. He calmly obtains their account as the reinforcements establish an organized frontline camp 32 33.

During the later battle with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, he supports Jin’s attack, helps pursue the survivors, and kills Fuguki. He then helps conceal Jin’s actual abilities by claiming that a Mangekyō awakening and Susanoo decided the battle, staking his life on that testimony before Fugaku 48 49 50 51.

Mangekyō Awakening and Joint Missions

After learning the Visualization Method, Shisui resolves to pursue a Mangekyō awakening and later reports success. Jin immediately instructs him to keep Kotoamatsukami secret 57 149.

Shisui continues leading his own team during joint operations with Team Minato, with Jin commanding both teams whenever Minato is absent. After the destruction of Kannabi Bridge, the squads separate to escape Iwagakure’s encirclement 153 171.

Undercover Allegiance and the Branch Family Split

Jin assigns Shisui to pose as a Hokage loyalist, gather dissenting Uchiha, and obtain resources from Hiruzen. Although Shisui finds the role humiliating and doubts its practicality, he accepts the political reasoning behind it 179 180 190 191.

His Mangekyō disclosure wins Hiruzen’s support and attracts Setsuna, Yashiro, and other opponents of Jin. The resulting confrontation includes a staged Susanoo battle, while the fighting at Setsuna’s mansion causes genuine casualties 186 204 207 208.

Fugaku formally separates Shisui’s supporters from the main clan, and Jin names him head of the Uchiha Branch Family. Hiruzen subsequently recognizes the group as a new shinobi clan, offers temporary housing in the Sarutobi compound, promises land, and provides 200 million ryo in start-up funds 213 214.

Shikaku later identifies the scheme, but warns Hiruzen that withdrawing support would destroy his credibility with smaller clans. Hiruzen reluctantly honors his commitments 225.

ANBU Service and the Kirigakure Investigation

Hiruzen assigns Shisui the ANBU deputy captain position while intending to restrict his access to intelligence and drain his ocular power through combat duties 236.

Despite his public allegiance, Shisui continues assisting Jin. During Mei Terumi’s visit, Jin tasks him with discreet perimeter security and watching for Root interference. Shisui later uncovers a suppressed report linking Yagura’s mental abnormalities to Sharingan-like genjutsu and helps arrange a formal meeting between Jin and Mei 243 244.
