Ch. 121Madara's personal guard
Key plot points and events
- Sasuke and Naruto work together to defeat Haku. Sasuke’s kick creates an opening for Naruto to strike, and Sasuke follows with shuriken, ending Haku’s Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals technique.
- Madara tells Zabuza that their wager is settled: his young subordinates have beaten Haku. He has also forced Zabuza to submit through a genjutsu and planted cursed seals on Zabuza and Haku to control them.
- Zabuza berates Haku, but Naruto defends him, pointing out that Haku lost to two gifted opponents and that Zabuza himself was defeated by Itachi.
- Madara has Naruto tie up Zabuza and Haku, then leads his group onward. Sakura worries the ropes will not hold them; Naruto reassures her that Itachi has a plan.
- After they leave, three masked ANBU arrive—the members of Madara’s personal guard. Their leader frees Zabuza and challenges him, provoking Zabuza into attacking. The guard leader defeats him decisively.
- Madara returns after escorting the others to Tazuna’s home. Zabuza sees the guards’ strength and begins to believe Madara’s promise that, with his help, killing the Mizukage may be possible.
Character developments and interactions
- Naruto and Sasuke prove effective as a team, combining their attacks to overcome Haku. Naruto also shows compassion by standing up for Haku when Zabuza insults him.
- Haku remains devoted and obedient to Zabuza despite being defeated and verbally abused.
- Zabuza maintains his pride and confidence, but his clash with the guard exposes the gap between his strength and Madara’s resources. He nonetheless begins to take Madara’s political promise seriously.
- Sakura is concerned about leaving the captured pair behind, while Naruto trusts Itachi’s judgment.
- Madara’s guard leader displays both confidence and overwhelming combat ability, establishing the guards as formidable subordinates.

- Teamwork and talent: Naruto and Sasuke win through cooperation rather than either defeating Haku alone.
- Power and control: Madara secures obedience through genjutsu and cursed seals, while his guard enforces his authority.
- Ambition and possibility: Seeing Madara’s strength and influence renews Zabuza’s hope of overthrowing the Mizukage.
