History
Fire Returns to the People
A-Zhao’s Path-Seeking Steles resonate with the Mortal Fire Steles throughout the Nine Provinces, awakening underground fire meridians. After she vanishes into the Northern Desert, the Flame Blade From the Heart remains embedded in the earth as the soul of a Path-Seeking Stele. Fire ceases to be controlled by a sovereign and becomes available for ordinary warmth, light, and protection 60 62.
Zhaoming subsequently travels the Nine Provinces to understand fire’s source. Encounters with people who protect others despite lacking flame lead him to identify its essence with courage, compassion, and persistence. At the Heart Abyss, he rekindles the heart-flame source through his mortal heart and the thoughts of the people; flames across the land respond with a shared soul 62.
Nian Sheng later establishes the Civilization Furnace and helps usher in the Firecraft Era. Fire workshops spread to every village, households acquire fire implements, and an unrestricted Fire Academy teaches practical uses of fire rather than Dou Qi or secret techniques. By the first year of the Firefolk Era, sparks from across the Nine Provinces form a river illuminating the Dark Domain 67 73.
Lanterns and the Eternal Night
In Firefolk Year 25, children throughout the Nine Provinces share a dream of a plain-robed woman carrying a gentle paper lantern. Their own lanterns release firefly-like lights into the earth, doubling the Heart Flame River’s expansion and restoring damaged veins. The following year, communities send lanterns north to support the sick child A He in Cold Ridge City 100 101.
The eternal night later spreads from the northern icefields. Vegetation withers, streams freeze, the Heart Flame River slows, and lamps disappear from Starfire Hall’s earth-vein map. Although the eternal night retreats, lingering mist isolates settlements and obstructs lamp signals. Rice fragrance carried through the mist restores communication and strengthens the Heart Flame veins 106 107.
The residual cold remains severe in Firefolk Year 58. Threads of light connect lamps into a land-spanning net as the Heart Flame River surges and Starfire Hall’s array brightens 109.
Shared Memory and Renewed Light
After dreaming that the Heart Flame River cannot find the Nine Provinces’ names, Xiaoman organizes ninety-nine children to inscribe ninety-nine names in the Ruin Abyss Well. The inscriptions reconnect the earth veins and establish the Well Inscription System, making ordinary people’s names anchors of the land’s memory 110 111.
Later, the Nine Provinces abandon “Lamp Guarder” as an exclusive title: anyone can become a spirit, lamps can be lit anywhere, and Light Dust preserves memories that might otherwise be forgotten. The civilization’s light eventually reaches submerged lands beyond its shores 129 137.
Fire and Light Networks
Heart Flame River
- Underground course: A river of light threads the Nine Provinces like blood vessels, linking earth veins, wells, and household hearths 108 110.
- Restorative effects: Firefly-like lights renew interrupted flows, sweeten well water, thaw frozen soil, and bring peaceful sleep to the sick 100.
- Vulnerability: Broken veins and failing flame seeds threaten wells, springs, hearths, and the land’s warmth; the eternal night can slow the river itself 106 110.
- Communal anchors: Inscribed names connect individuals and their associated places to the river’s shared pulse 111.
Lamp Arrays and Light Veins
- Ancient foundation: A Divine Tree’s roots once connected Lamp Guarders and sustained the Nine Provinces Lamp Array 147.
- Renewal: Xiaoman and seven apprentices rekindle the tree together, avoiding the proposed sacrifice of Xiaoman’s humanity. Lamp arrays across the Nine Provinces ignite, and the Nanming shop’s lamps become new branches connected to the earth veins 147.
- Stellar structure: The underground light veins follow an ancient star chart. Xiaoman identifies the network as the first Lamp Guarders’ use of the heavens as a blueprint for connecting the land 150.
- Mapping: Heart-Flame Resonance extracts vein paths at lamp-array cores, while Light Glyphs recorded on specially made Light Silk assemble the complete map 150.
Culture and Customs
Principles of Fire
Zhaoming establishes three precepts that the flames throughout the Nine Provinces answer 62:
- Fire must remain true to the heart.
- Anyone can kindle it.
- Its highest purpose is protection.
Firecraft develops these principles into practical education and livelihood. The Civilization Furnace serves clothing, food, medicine, and travelers’ light rather than weapons or royal authority. The Fire Academy admits anyone willing to learn, including people who use fire to overcome barriers caused by blindness or impaired mobility 67.
Remembrance and Inheritance
- Well inscriptions: Every spring equinox, children add new names and restore forgotten ones at communal wells 111.
- Birth and homecoming: Families record newborns’ childhood names; returning travelers touch their own inscriptions 111.
- Death: Descendants erase an elder’s name after death, allowing its light to return to the Heart Flame River 111.
- Charcoal-pencil forests: Children who finish their dream drawings plant their pencils at the Ruin Abyss Well rather than reclaiming or reusing them. These forests later carry messages through the connected earth veins 112 113.
- Earthen Pot Totems: Su Li has totems erected along major roads after A He’s battered pot becomes a vessel for the Heart Flame River and the wishes of ordinary people 108.
- Firefolk Chronicle: The continuing record commits the Nine Provinces to preserving ordinary lives and histories rather than leaving people forgotten 74.
Exploration Beyond the Nine Provinces
| Event | Discovery |
|---|---|
| Southern Sea expedition | In Light-Dust Year 180, A Zhou leads a Lamp Language delegation to the unmapped Sunken Light Trench. The expedition finds submerged towers, lamp pillars, and steles belonging to the older Lamp Abyss Civilization, whose people preserved their memories in lamps after their continent sank 137. |
| Nine Provinces Lamp Map | After a three-month survey, Xiaoman and seven apprentices complete a map showing a light route across the Eastern Sea to Starfall Continent. Its abundant light veins have the same spectrum as Lampheart Moon before Source Return 150. |
| Possible overseas origin | Yue Yi’s star-patterned Jade Slip records a legend that the first Lamp Guarders arrived from overseas aboard starships. Yunqi suggests Starfall may contain another lampheart and be their true homeland; this remains a possibility rather than a confirmed origin 150. |
| Opening of the starway | Completion of the map lights every Nine Provinces lamp array simultaneously and produces an immense aerial star chart. The Light Language Stele declares that Light Language now extends beyond the Nine Provinces into the sea of stars 150. |
