Ch. 701Divine Lord Giant Wood's Plan

Key plot points and events

  • Shi Zhu, whose memories of his previous life and former personality are sealed, treats Lu Yu as a stranger and tries to leave Divine Lord Giant Wood’s banquet.
  • Giant Wood explains that Emperor Ziwei’s term as ruler of the stars is nearing its end. The Azure Emperor hopes to take his place, revise the Heavenly Laws, and establish conditions that would let gods and immortals love and have children freely.
  • Giant Wood says the Azure Emperor is accumulating merit by rescuing suffering beings and has founded the Green Radiance Eternal Joy World. He gives Shi Zhu and Lu Yu ten books containing the teachings of the Azure Emperor’s ten great manifestations, hoping they will spread them. Shi Zhu refuses to participate.
  • When Shi Zhu again tries to leave, Giant Wood traps him and attacks, claiming he wants to restore Shi Zhu’s past-life memories. He uses the Heavenwood Divine Needle and seven jade rings, weapons prepared specifically to counter Old Man Withered Bamboo.
  • Shi Zhu resists with the Six Roots Purity Bamboo, nine Precious Pearls, and the Xuanyuan Nine Palaces Swords. His current Orthodox Mystic Sect techniques lack the weaknesses Giant Wood expected, and his swords quickly shatter the jade rings and threaten the divine needle. Giant Wood calls for a halt before the fight destroys his lair.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Zhu is markedly unlike his former self: detached from Lu Yu, uninterested in Giant Wood’s cause, and unexpectedly formidable in combat. His sealed memories make him an unfamiliar person to both his old allies and enemies.
  • Lu Yu is baffled by Shi Zhu’s changed temperament. She misses their former rivalry and wonders whether he has somehow been replaced, though she also considers whether her own revenge may have gone too far.
  • Divine Lord Giant Wood reveals his filial loyalty to the Azure Emperor and his determination to help him gain the North Star throne. His frustration over being barred from heaven turns into coercion when Shi Zhu refuses to help. He is surprised by Shi Zhu’s strength and ultimately tries to explain that he only wants to restore his memories.
  • The confrontation pits Giant Wood’s prepared countermeasures against the very different arts Shi Zhu now practices, exposing how thoroughly the past-life Shi Zhu and present Shi Zhu differ.

Significant themes

  • Identity and memory: Shi Zhu’s altered character raises questions about how much personality depends on memory and past experience.
  • Freedom versus imposed destiny: The Heavenly Laws restrict Giant Wood’s return to heaven and the lives of divine beings; his plan seeks to change those rules, but he pursues it by trying to control Shi Zhu.
  • Faith and persuasion versus coercion: Giant Wood presents a compassionate mission of rescuing the suffering, yet reacts to refusal with force.
  • Adaptation and expectation: Giant Wood’s strategy fails because he judges Shi Zhu by the techniques and weaknesses of his former life.

Ch. 702Azure Emperor Register

Key plot points and events

  • Divine Lord Giant Wood and Lu Yu confront Shi Zhu, hoping to undo the seal on his memories from past lives. They believe that once he remembers who he was as Old Man Withered Bamboo, he will be ashamed to have become Shi Feiyang’s disciple and will abandon him.
  • Giant Wood begins fighting Shi Zhu, but Shi Zhu destroys a Jade Ring and uses the united Xuanyuan Nine Swords to threaten Giant Wood’s life-bound Heavenwood Divine Needle. Giant Wood withdraws the needle and stops the fight.
  • Giant Wood offers Shi Zhu and Lu Yu a place in his plan to spread the Azure Emperor’s teachings. They would serve as his attendants, receive the Azure Emperor Register, and eventually ascend with him to the Green Radiance Eternal Joy World.
  • He argues that the coming Dharma Decline Age will drain spiritual energy across most worlds, making Shi Feiyang’s path unsafe. By joining him, Shi Zhu could secure a future and help spread the Azure Emperor Method.
  • Shi Zhu refuses. He trusts his master’s explanation for sealing his memories and believes the seal allowed him to escape the repetitive cycle of his past lives. He leaves after collecting his belongings, while Giant Wood and Lu Yu let him go.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Zhu remains loyal to Shi Feiyang and firmly accepts his present identity. He sees the memory seal not as an insult, but as a necessary means of personal growth.
  • Divine Lord Giant Wood is driven by both ambition and concern: he wants to build a following for the Azure Emperor, but also believes he is offering Shi Zhu a safer, superior path. His frustration grows when persuasion fails.
  • Lu Yu initially wants to fight alongside Giant Wood. She is disappointed and alarmed that her senior brother accepts his discipleship, but ultimately does not force him to stay.
  • Giant Wood and Lu Yu’s view of Shi Zhu is shaped by their old rivalry with Old Man Withered Bamboo. They expect his recovered memories to restore his former pride, while Shi Zhu’s response confounds them.

Significant themes

  • Identity and personal growth: Shi Zhu argues that repeatedly recovering his old memories kept him trapped in the same self; living without them helped him change.
  • Loyalty and trust: He trusts his master despite the others’ claims that his choices stem from ignorance.
  • Competing paths and institutions: The chapter contrasts Shi Feiyang’s path with Giant Wood’s organized, credentialed Azure Emperor lineage, including the power and authority represented by celestial registers.
  • Fear of decline versus faith in a chosen path: Giant Wood uses the coming collapse of spiritual energy to urge Shi Zhu toward security, but Shi Zhu refuses to let fear dictate his allegiance.

Ch. 703The Three Fiends of Zhongnan

Key plot points and events

  • As the Dharma Decline Age approaches and spiritual energy is expected to vanish, Shi Feiyang mobilizes the Yu Kingdom to gather resources and transform Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain into a vast manufacturing center.
  • A huge network of factories produces the All-Heavens Stellar Mystic-Demon Shuttles and powerful magical weapons, preparing for Shi Feiyang’s ambitious plans and the uncertain future.
  • The Earth Immortals’ tribulation arrives. Shi Feiyang organizes a formation using eight divine mountains around Copper Coconut Island to help protect the 372 people who must face it, including himself and many prominent cultivators.
  • At Situ Ping’s request, Shi Feiyang humbly invites Yixiu and Fairy Han to join the refuge. Though initially wary of accepting help, the couple recognize his generosity and set out for Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain with their household and disciples.
  • En route, they encounter Yixiu’s junior schoolmates Shang Zhu, Zhu Que, and Wei Ji—the Three Fiends of Zhongnan. Shang Zhu says their lineage has received a book, treasures, and letters left by Daoist Heshas, supposedly describing a way through the tribulation.
  • As Yixiu and Fairy Han prepare to descend with the three, Zhu Que and Wei Ji suddenly unleash blood shadows against them. Fairy Han senses the attack and raises her Ruyi Water-Mist Gauze.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang demonstrates foresight, organizational skill, and humility: he prepares on an extraordinary scale for the coming age and welcomes Yixiu despite their limited friendship and past tensions.
  • Yixiu remains proud and would prefer to survive through his own school’s inheritance rather than rely on an outsider. He nevertheless accepts Shi’s invitation after recognizing it as sincere.
  • Fairy Han is more distrustful of the Three Fiends, especially Zhu Que, because of past family and sect entanglements. Her suspicion proves justified when the attack begins.
  • Situ Ping acts out of filial concern, asking Shi to help his master and Fairy Han.
  • Shang Zhu presents the Three Fiends as reconciled and seeking cooperation, while Zhu Que and Wei Ji’s sudden attack exposes a likely deception or renewed treachery.
  • The chapter ends mid-ambush, with Fairy Han responding defensively; the attackers’ motives and the outcome remain unresolved.

Significant themes

  • Preparing for civilizational collapse: Shi Feiyang responds to the coming loss of spiritual energy through collective labor, industrial organization, and stockpiling.
  • Cooperation versus pride: Survival may require accepting aid, even when personal or sectarian pride makes it difficult.
  • Trust and betrayal: Shi’s openhandedness contrasts with the Three Fiends’ apparent duplicity, while Fairy Han’s distrust highlights the danger of misplaced confidence.
  • Inherited wisdom and responsibility: Daoist Heshas’s preparations suggest that past generations can anticipate danger and leave guidance for those who follow.

Ch. 704Three faiths vie for supremacy

Plot points and events

  • Fairy Han’s Ruyi Water-Mist Gauze cannot stop the Blood Shadow Divine Skill. Yixiu and Fairy Han fight off two blood shadows using their spells and treasures.
  • Shang Zhu reveals that the attackers are controlled by the Blood God Princess. He warns Yixiu to seek the Primordial Yang Adept at Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain, then is seized by an unseen force and apparently killed. Yixiu and Fairy Han escape and report the incident to Shi Feiyang.
  • Shi Feiyang explains that three movements are competing to win the Central Land’s people: Divine Lord Giant Wood’s religion, Buddhism, and the Demon Cult. The Demon Cult plans to turn people into demons and ultimately transform the world into a demon realm; Buddhism’s leader, X in Ru, aims to make it a Pure Land.
  • Shi Feiyang is torn between confronting these movements and preparing Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain for the coming age of dharma decline. He concludes that he cannot leave his current work and decides to send Shi Zhu to enlist help from Master Youtan and Shibi Old Man.
  • Shi Zhu departs for Tide-Sound Cave. At the chapter’s end, Qi Xia’er is surprised to hear he has arrived.

Character developments and interactions

  • Yixiu and Fairy Han prove an effective, coordinated team, but the battle also exposes the limits of Fairy Han’s prized defensive treasure.
  • Shang Zhu’s warning shows that he resists the Blood God Princess’s control long enough to help Yixiu, sacrificing himself in the process.
  • Shi Feiyang reveals the scale of the crisis and his uncertainty about how to protect the world. He is also troubled by a divination predicting betrayal close to him, though he cannot identify the betrayer.
  • Yixiu urges immediate action against the Blood God, while Shi Feiyang argues that his responsibilities at Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain must come first. He delegates an outside mission to Shi Zhu, whose flexibility and relative lack of critical duties make him the safest choice.
  • Master Youtan and Qi Xia’er are already concerned about the upheaval and the Emei Sect’s vulnerability; Shi Zhu’s unexpected arrival signals that Shi Feiyang is seeking their aid.

Significant themes

  • Competing faiths and world-making: Buddhism, the Demon Cult, and Giant Wood’s faction seek followers for radically different ends, each with the power to reshape the world.
  • Duty versus intervention: Shi Feiyang must choose between confronting immediate dangers and preparing for a broader catastrophe.
  • Uncertainty and betrayal: Even divination cannot clarify every future threat, while Shi Feiyang’s plans depend on trust and delegation.
  • Sacrifice and resistance: Shang Zhu’s final warning demonstrates courage in the face of supernatural control.

Ch. 705Red Flower Reappears

Plot points and events

  • Shi Feiyang sends his disciple Shi Zhu to Master Youtan with a jade talisman. Despite the long-standing hostility between their sides, Shi Zhu delivers it without ceremony and leaves.
  • The talisman contains the shattered soul of Chen Yufeng, Master Youtan’s former disciple, whom Shi Feiyang killed at the Sacred Mausoleum. He has returned her soul to honor a promise to Deng Bagu and to ease tensions with Youtan.
  • The talisman also warns that the Demon Cult’s Red Flower Princess has emerged and is hiding beside Xie Shan, whose life may be in danger. Youtan verifies that Xie Shan is in trouble and leaves to investigate, warning Qi Xia’er not to leave their cave while he is gone.
  • At Mount Wuyi, Youtan finds Xie Shan dangerously weakened and sees demonic energy entwined around his spirit.
  • Xie Shan explains that the apparent shared delusion of his daughters was actually two separate delusion realms. While everyone focused on rescuing the younger daughter, Xie Lin, Nun Xinru had broken the elder daughter Xie Ying’s delusion and placed the Red Flower Princess inside her body.
  • The Princess has been secretly draining Xie Shan’s essence. She disguises the practice as a way to recover and help save her sister, using tears and remorse to persuade her father to tolerate it.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Feiyang makes a conciliatory gesture toward Youtan by returning Chen Yufeng’s soul and warning him about Xie Shan.
  • Master Youtan moves from suspicion to alarm, accepts Chen Yufeng’s spirit for safekeeping, and acts quickly to investigate Xie Shan’s condition.
  • Qi Xia’er is wary of Shi Zhu and fears a trap, but follows Youtan’s strict instructions to stay behind.
  • Xie Shan is shown as exhausted, impaired, and deceived by his paternal concern for his daughters. He trusts the supposed Xie Ying and allows her to drain him.
  • The Red Flower Princess proves patient and manipulative, exploiting Xie Shan’s love and disguising demonic energy as Buddhist power.

Significant themes

  • Reconciliation and obligation: Shi Feiyang’s return of Chen Yufeng’s soul fulfills a promise and opens a small path toward easing old enmities.
  • Deception and misperception: The mistaken belief that the sisters shared one delusion lets the Princess hide in plain sight.
  • Parental love as vulnerability: Xie Shan’s compassion makes him susceptible to his daughter’s impersonation and excuses.
  • Appearances versus reality: The Princess’s concealed demonic nature appears to Xie Shan as signs of Buddhist cultivation, while his own deterioration goes unnoticed until it is severe.

Ch. 706Xinru's Great Vow

Key plot points and events

  • Xie Shan has spent years trying to rescue his younger daughter, Xie Lin, from her delusion realm. His efforts have steadily damaged his meditation and left him vulnerable to Red Flower Princess’s influence; without Master Youtan’s intervention, he would likely have died within a year.
  • Xie Shan also believes his elder daughter, Xie Ying, is injured and has been unknowingly draining his essence qi. He plans to save Xie Lin first, then help Xie Ying.
  • Nun Xinru has vowed to deliver all living beings and eventually manifest Buddhahood in a world without a Buddha. Though senior Buddhist masters consider her plans troubling, they avoid openly opposing her because of her stature and power. Master Fentuo has already failed to recover sacred items she took from him.
  • Master Youtan, guided by Shi Feiyang’s warning, suspects Red Flower Princess is inside Xie Ying. When Xie Ying refuses to come out, he attacks with his Vajra divine light. She counters with Blood Shadow Divine Light, revealing her demonic powers.
  • Xie Shan mistakes the display for evidence that Xie Ying learned demonic arts during her supposed ordeals in a delusion realm. In reality, Xie Ying is dead: Red Flower Princess has taken over her body and has been deceiving him.
  • The chapter recounts how Li Ning once carried Red Flower Princess, sealed in Zunsheng’s relic, through the Southern Border while practicing austerities and answering her temptations with Buddhist teachings. Chan Master Bai Mei expected this long discipline to gradually transform her.
  • Xinru instead seeks to reshape the world into a Buddhist Pure Land and sees Shi Feiyang as her chief obstacle. She supports the Demon Cult, helps restore Deng Yin as Blood God Lord, and makes Zhu Youmu her disciple and intended future chief Arhat.
  • Xinru also engineers a route to Li Ning: she arranges for the Yin-Yang Old Man to be rescued from Zhu Youmu and tells him that only Zhu Youmu’s junior brother, Li Ning, can save him—setting the stage for him to search for Li Ning.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xie Shan is increasingly desperate and compromised, yet his love for his daughters keeps him from recognizing the truth about Xie Ying.
  • Xie Ying / Red Flower Princess evades Youtan, then openly fights him when concealment fails. Her demonic abilities expose the danger hidden behind her familiar identity.
  • Master Youtan acts on Shi Feiyang’s intelligence, testing Xie Ying rather than accepting her excuses.
  • Nun Xinru emerges as a powerful, ambitious strategist whose religious vow masks a sweeping plan to reshape the world. She manipulates rivals and Demon Cult figures alike.
  • Li Ning is presented as a model of endurance and compassion: he resists Red Flower Princess’s schemes through disciplined practice and Dharma.
  • Zhu Youmu serves Xinru’s plans as a formidable demon-slayer and her chosen disciple; the Yin-Yang Old Man, whom he nearly kills, becomes Xinru’s instrument for finding Li Ning.

Significant themes

  • Faith and spiritual discipline: Li Ning’s steadfast practice contrasts with Xie Shan’s failing meditation and growing vulnerability.
  • Deception and mistaken identity: Xie Shan interprets signs of possession as his daughter’s suffering, while Red Flower Princess exploits his trust.
  • Religious ambition and power: Xinru’s vow to save all beings is intertwined with political maneuvering and the desire to establish her own Buddhist order.
  • Compassion versus coercion: Li Ning tries to reform Red Flower Princess through the Dharma, while Xinru’s approach relies on manipulation and force.

Ch. 707Red Flower Sarira

Key plot points and events

  • Fleeing Zhu Youmu, the Yin-Yang Old Man finds Li Ning and begs for protection, claiming Nun Xinru sent him. Li Ning ignores his master Bai Mei’s warning not to accept or engage with him, and argues with him instead.
  • Zhu Youmu arrives, explains his failed attempt to get Master Fentuo’s help reversing time for Jiang Xuejun, and demands Li Ning’s Zunsheng Sarira. Li Ning refuses, condemning Zhu’s greed and anger.
  • Li Ning uses magic to fight and flee, violating Bai Mei’s instruction to resolve danger through Buddhist wisdom alone. Zhu catches him, kills him, seals his primordial spirit in a rock, and takes the Sarira to Nun Xinru.
  • Xinru removes the Jade-Transforming Pearl and releases Red Flower Princess. She secretly places the demon in Xie Ying’s body, takes the Bodhi-Leaf Spirit Talisman and Seven-Treasure Golden Banner, and returns the Xie sisters to Xie Shan without revealing what she has done.
  • Shi Feiyang detects a clue in Xinru’s karmic threads and alerts Master Youtan. Youtan confronts Red Flower Princess, whose power has surged by taking Xie Ying’s life essence and absorbing Xie Shan’s energy.
  • Youtan drives the demon back, but she escapes through a deceptive blood-splitting technique. He reveals that Xinru took Xie Ying’s primordial spirit. Xie Shan is desperate to recover his daughter, while Youtan urges him not to act rashly.

Character developments and interactions

  • Li Ning is earnest and steadfast in defending the Sarira, but repeatedly ignores chances to escape and breaks his master’s discipline. His defiance and use of magic lead to his death.
  • Zhu Youmu, consumed by grief and frustration over Jiang Xuejun, lets anger override Buddhist principles and kills his fellow disciple to obtain the Sarira.
  • Nun Xinru emerges as a calculating schemer, manipulating the Red Flower Princess, the Xie sisters, and the pursuit of the talismans for her own ends.
  • Red Flower Princess feigns obedience to Xinru while pursuing her own survival. Though powerful and cunning, she cannot defeat Youtan directly and escapes by trickery.
  • Xie Shan shifts from shock to desperate resolve when he learns Ying may be recoverable; Youtan counters his grief with caution. Shi Feiyang acts indirectly by uncovering Xinru’s scheme and enlisting Buddhist allies.

Significant themes

  • Discipline, attachment, and consequence: Li Ning’s failure to follow Bai Mei’s instruction turns a chance encounter into catastrophe.
  • Buddhist ideals versus human weakness: Zhu’s anger and greed contradict the teachings he claims to serve.
  • Deception and hidden motives: Xinru’s apparent generosity masks a larger plan, while Red Flower Princess and Xinru each flatter and exploit the other.
  • Karma and uncertain outcomes: Choices, rivalries, and concealed actions reshape the characters’ fates, while Xie Ying’s condition remains unresolved.

Ch. 708Zen Master, Please Conduct Yourself with Dignity

Key plot points and events

  • Xie Shan, convinced Nun Xinru had taken his daughter Xie Ying’s spirit, travels to Mount Jiuhua to confront her. He cannot accept that a Buddhist nun might have deliberately killed Xie Ying and used her body for the Red Flower Princess.
  • Mount Jiuhua has been transformed into a spectacular Buddhist sanctuary, with nine lotus-shaped peaks, temples, Buddha light, and a growing community of worshippers and disciples.
  • Before Xie Shan arrives, two abbesses, Guangming and Guanghui, seek relief from years of visions in which their old enemy Wei Fengniang appears as Buddhas, loved ones, and even themselves. Unable to forgive her, they have failed to follow earlier teachers’ advice to let go of their hatred.
  • Nun Xinru promises a secret practice that will subdue their inner demons. Encouraged by her disciple Pantu, both abbesses become Xinru’s disciples.
  • Xinru welcomes Xie Shan and identifies her attendant, A Ying, as Xie Ying reborn. Xie Shan recognizes his daughter’s primordial spirit and reaches for her, but A Ying withdraws and asks him to behave with dignity. She says she does not remember him and that, as his former-life adoptive daughter, their old father-daughter relationship no longer applies.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xie Shan arrives angry and suspicious, but recognition of Xie Ying overwhelms him with grief and longing. His emotional, attachment-prone nature is emphasized.
  • A Ying/Xie Ying is composed and guided by Buddhist detachment. Though she is Xie Shan’s daughter reborn, she regards him as a stranger in this life.
  • Nun Xinru demonstrates spiritual authority and persuasive power, drawing several accomplished practitioners into her community. Her explanation of Xie Ying’s rebirth leaves Xie Shan facing the painful limits of their former bond.
  • Guangming and Guanghui are shown to be trapped by resentment toward Wei Fengniang despite years of Buddhist practice. They accept Xinru’s help after other teachers’ counsel proved impossible for them to follow.
  • Pantu, anxious about the coming calamity and uncertain about her future, finds a sense of belonging in returning to Buddhism under Xinru.

Significant themes

  • Attachment, grief, and changing relationships: Rebirth disrupts the identities and bonds people take for granted; Xie Shan’s love cannot restore the former relationship.
  • Forgiveness and spiritual practice: Guangming and Guanghui’s hatred obstructs their progress, exposing the gap between Buddhist teachings and the ability to live by them.
  • Faith and influence: Xinru’s miracles, sanctuary, and teachings attract worshippers and powerful disciples, while raising the stakes of Xie Shan’s confrontation with her.
  • Temperament and karmic consequences: Xie Shan’s own reflection links his emotional nature and accumulated ties to his repeated failures in cultivation.

Ch. 709It Was All to Deliver You

Key plot points

  • Xie Shan confronts Nun Xinru after A Ying no longer recognizes him as her father. Xinru argues that she separated A Ying from him to break his attachment and guide him toward Buddhist enlightenment.
  • Xinru explains that she also engineered Xie Lin’s delusion realm to awaken Xie Shan, and placed the Red Flower Witch inside Xie Ying to expose how little his love depended on knowing exactly who he was cherishing.
  • Struck by Xinru’s arguments and the loss of his daughter, Xie Shan spits blood and begins to question his resentment and attachments. A Ying urges him to stay and become Xinru’s disciple, but he returns to Mount Wuyi because Xie Lin still needs him.
  • After Xie Shan recounts what happened, Master Youtan reflects on Xinru’s methods. He contrasts genuine Buddhism—which asks people to relinquish attachment—with demonic teachings disguised as Buddhism, which indulge desire and intensify greed, anger, and delusion. He sees Xinru as moving toward that dangerous path.

Character developments and interactions

  • Xie Shan is torn between Buddhist understanding and his deep paternal love. Though he accepts that A Ying has entered a new life and tries to let go, his concern for Xie Lin ultimately draws him home.
  • A Ying has fully entered Xinru’s Buddhist teaching and no longer feels daughterly attachment to Xie Shan. She acknowledges their past-life bond but speaks to him as a Buddhist practitioner, not as a daughter.
  • Nun Xinru presents her harsh actions as deliberate methods of deliverance, insisting that the daughters’ different temperaments required different interventions. Her certainty and methods unsettle the other Buddhist masters’ assessment of her.
  • Master Youtan listens to Xie Shan’s account and recognizes the gap between Xinru’s rhetoric and the principles of orthodox Buddhist cultivation.

Significant themes

  • Attachment and reincarnation: Family bonds shift across lives, challenging the idea that relationships or identities are permanent.
  • Love, identity, and compassion: Xinru forces Xie Shan to ask whether his love depended on who his daughter was—or whether he loved the being before him regardless.
  • Knowledge versus practice: Xie Shan understands Buddhist doctrine but struggles to live by it when faced with personal loss.
  • True versus false Buddhism: Genuine cultivation relinquishes attachment, while demonic teachings use religious language to gratify desire and deepen delusion.

Ch. 710Divine Sword Peak

Chapter Summary

Key plot points and events

  • Master Youtan realizes that Xin Ruyu poses a threat greater than an ordinary enemy: because she once cultivated deeply in Buddhism, she can twist Buddhist doctrine to justify cruelty while presenting herself as righteous. He fears that the collapse of Buddhism could begin from within.
  • Youtan leaves Xie Shan, who is occupied caring for the gravely ill Xie Lin, and seeks help from Master Fentuo at Dragon-Elephant Nunnery.
  • Fentuo confirms that he has already fought Xin Ruyu and doubts they can defeat her. She possesses the Bodhi-Leaf Spirit Talisman and Seven-Treasure Golden Banner, while several powerful Buddhist monks have died. Fentuo argues that Buddhist teaching should be allowed to fade naturally; Youtan refuses to give up and resolves to recruit other Buddhist allies.
  • Their response serves Shi Feiyang’s larger strategy. Xin Ruyu uses Deng Yin and the Demon Cult to pressure Shi Feiyang; in return, he sends Shi Zhu to alert orthodox Buddhists to Xin Ruyu’s activities, expecting them to oppose her.
  • Shi Zhu travels to Divine Sword Peak to meet Shibi Old Man. A God-Demon initially threatens him and Shibi’s attendant tries to keep him apart from the guests, but Shi Zhu insists on going to the Western Palace.
  • There he finds Shibi Old Man and Fire-Spirit Divine Lord meeting with Stone God Princess, Deng Yin, Chishi Divine Monarch, and Nine-Li Divine Lord. Shi Zhu delivers Shi Feiyang’s proposal: Shibi and Fire-Spirit should move Divine Sword Peak to Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain to avoid the coming tribulation.

Character developments

  • Master Youtan shifts from alarm to determined action, choosing to organize resistance despite the danger and the losses among Buddhist leaders.
  • Master Fentuo has grown weary and cautious after repeated defeats by Xin Ruyu. Once the more forceful of the two monks, he now favors accepting Buddhism’s decline rather than becoming attached to worldly struggle.
  • Shi Zhu displays the pride and resolve inherited from his former life as Old Man Withered Bamboo. Though warned of danger and offered a means of escape, he presses ahead to confront the situation directly.
  • Shi Feiyang emerges as a strategic power broker, turning his opponents’ tactics against them by mobilizing Buddhists against Xin Ruyu while separately seeking the relocation of Divine Sword Peak.

Significant themes

  • Corruption from within: A tradition may be more vulnerable to someone who knows its teachings and can distort them than to an outside attacker.
  • Faith, decline, and attachment: Fentuo views the fading of belief as a natural consequence, while Youtan believes action is still necessary to defend the true Dharma.
  • Strategy through indirect alliances: Shi Feiyang and Xin Ruyu both use third parties to weaken their rivals, even drawing former enemies into their plans.
  • Pride and duty: Shi Zhu’s refusal to retreat reflects his enduring identity and sense of responsibility.

Character interactions

  • Youtan tries to persuade Fentuo to join him against Xin Ruyu, but Fentuo’s defeatism contrasts with Youtan’s determination.
  • Shi Zhu brushes aside the God-Demon’s threats and the attendant’s efforts to keep him away from Shibi’s guests.
  • Deng Yin welcomes Shi Zhu’s presence, arguing that the discussion concerns him and Shi Feiyang directly.
  • Shi Zhu addresses Shibi and Fire-Spirit as fellow Daoists and presents Shi Feiyang’s request, placing the decision about Divine Sword Peak’s fate before them.

Ch. 711The Buddha Realm and the Demon Realm

Summary

Key plot points and events

  • Deng Yin and Stone God Princess arrive at Divine Sword Peak to recruit Shibi Old Man and Fire-Spirit Divine Lord into their plan to transform the entire world into a Demon Realm. They promise the pair rulership over the Western Sea and its asura hosts.
  • Shibi reveals Shi Feiyang’s warning: Shi Feiyang knows of their plan and says it will fail while he remains in the world. Deng Yin reacts with anger and vows to make Shi Feiyang a Blood Sea Dragon King after conquering the world.
  • Stone God Princess and Deng Yin try to turn Shi Zhu against Shi Feiyang. They argue that Shi Feiyang has manipulated him, concealed the truth about his past lives, and treated him as he treated Deng Yin. They cite past grievances involving Shibi, Fire-Spirit, and others to portray Shi Feiyang as a common enemy.
  • Their words are reinforced by demonic mind-influence spells. Shi Zhu wavers and unconsciously begins probing the seal on his memories, receiving fragments of past lives and former experiences. Shibi interrupts the spellcasting before the couple can press their advantage.
  • Stone God Princess broadens their recruitment plan: the couple intends to unite all six of the “Six Oddities of the Cosmos.” She claims that Buddhist and demonic aims are ultimately the same, describing the Buddhist Pure Land and Blood Sea Demon Realm as two expressions of one realm.

Character developments

  • Deng Yin is newly confident after mastering both parts of the Blood God Scripture with Stone God Princess. His power has risen sharply, deepening his resentment toward Shi Feiyang and his ambition to rule the transformed world.
  • Stone God Princess emerges as the couple’s persuasive strategist. She restrains Deng Yin when he is angered, then carefully exploits others’ doubts and old grievances.
  • Shi Zhu is torn between loyalty to Shi Feiyang and curiosity about his sealed memories. Though he does not openly reject his master, the couple’s accusations and spells make him question what has been kept from him.
  • Shibi Old Man shows caution and authority, having arranged for Fire-Spirit to be present as protection against mental influence. He firmly stops the couple from using their arts on Divine Sword Peak.
  • Fire-Spirit Divine Lord remains largely quiet, but his presence helps guard against the demonic pair’s coercion.

Significant themes

  • Manipulation and trust: The chapter leaves Shi Feiyang’s conduct contested, as Deng Yin and Stone God Princess present his past actions as exploitation while Shi Zhu lacks the full memory needed to judge them.
  • Memory and identity: Shi Zhu’s sealed past lives raise the question of whether understanding one’s history is worth risking the loyalties and protections built in the present.
  • Power and ambition: Deng Yin’s growing strength fuels his grand plan to remake the world and rule it.
  • The boundary between Buddhism and demonic practice: Stone God Princess argues that Buddha and demon are two faces of the same reality, unsettling Shibi and Fire-Spirit and foreshadowing a broader conflict over spiritual truth.

Character interactions

  • Deng Yin openly threatens Shi Feiyang through Shi Zhu, while Stone God Princess alternates between soothing Deng Yin and steering the conversation.
  • The couple jointly pressures Shi Zhu, using both personal accusations and supernatural influence to weaken his faith in Shi Feiyang.
  • Shibi protects Shi Zhu by interrupting the spells and setting a clear boundary against their use of demonic arts in his domain.
  • Stone God Princess presents her “Buddha and demon are one” doctrine to Shibi and Fire-Spirit; their alarm shows how disturbing and radical her belief is.

Ch. 712Shibi Old Man's Plans

Key plot points

  • Deng Yin and Stone God Princess reveal their plan to transform the world into a Demon Realm. Their scheme would kill all living beings, turn them into ghosts and then demons, and use the resulting blood to create a world-spanning blood sea before the coming Dharma Decline.
  • Shibi Old Man sees the plan as a chance to achieve far more than ordinary ascent: he could rule the Western Sea as an Asura king. He asks Deng Yin and Stone God Princess to wait while he consults his junior brother, Fire-Spirit Divine Lord.
  • Shibi believes the plan’s greatest obstacles are Primordial Yang Adept and powerful figures in the Eastern Sea. He suspects the Buddhist nun Xinru may have secretly aligned with Deng Yin and Stone God Princess, despite her vow to establish a Pure Land.
  • In private, Shibi argues that Deng Yin’s complete Blood God Scripture and the Buddhist treasures associated with Xinru could make their alliance overwhelming. He imagines claiming the Western Sea, renaming it the Asura Sea, and ruling over its Asura tribes.
  • Fire-Spirit remains unconvinced. He worries that other powerful people will oppose a plan that would bring universal suffering, and he would rather seek safety and join the Orthodox Mystic Sect.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shibi Old Man shifts from caution to strong temptation. His long-standing ambition to become an Asura King makes Deng Yin’s offer especially appealing, though he still wants reassurance that the plan can succeed.
  • Fire-Spirit Divine Lord contrasts with Shibi: past experience and spiritual change have made him less combative and more inclined toward safety, virtue, and the Orthodox path. He cautions Shibi but does not persuade him.
  • Deng Yin and Stone God Princess understand Shibi’s ambitions and deliberately offer him a role no rival can match. Their mutual smiles after he leaves show that they believe they have nearly won him over.
  • Shibi and Fire-Spirit debate whether to join Deng Yin or seek refuge with Primordial Yang Adept. Their differing priorities—power and dominion versus security and repentance—are left unresolved.

Significant themes

  • Ambition versus salvation: Shibi is tempted by the promise of dominion, while Fire-Spirit seeks a safer, more virtuous course.
  • The cost of remaking the world: The proposed “sublimation” of the world is framed as a grand transformation, but it depends on mass slaughter and the destruction of material life.
  • Uncertain alliances: Xinru’s public Buddhist mission may conceal an alignment with demonic aims, blurring the boundary between religious and demonic paths.
  • Spiritual decline and survival: The coming Dharma Decline shapes everyone’s choices, making refuge, ascent, and control of the world seem increasingly urgent.

Ch. 713Blood Demon Great Method

Key plot points

  • Shibi Old Man, stirred by Deng Yin and Stone God Princess, embraces his long-suppressed asura nature and chooses the demonic vision of transforming the world into a sea of blood over the Buddhist path of renunciation.
  • Meanwhile, Deng Yin and Stone God Princess use the Blood Demon Great Method to weaken Shi Zhu’s memory seal. They hope to turn him against Shi Feiyang and use their conflict to find an opening to control Shi Feiyang.
  • Shi Zhu detects their influence and counters it by circulating the Nine Heavens Primordial Yang Great Method, uniting his essence, qi, and spirit. Their mind-affecting magic can no longer find a foothold.
  • The pair intensify their attack: Deng Yin floods Shi Zhu with rage, while Stone God Princess tempts him with cherished memories of his old life—his junior sister Lu Yu, Han Xiao, and their time learning under their master.
  • When persuasion and mental manipulation fail, Deng Yin decides Shi Zhu is too great a threat to leave alive. He and Stone God Princess attack him directly with a tightening sphere of blood-colored demonic light. Shi Zhu’s Six Roots Purity Bamboo begins to falter, and two stalks are stained red.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shibi Old Man rediscovers his asura temperament and willingly commits to the demonic path, viewing its ambition and freedom as more compelling than Buddhist detachment.
  • Shi Zhu shows how far he has developed inwardly. He accepts that his present self is not simply the person he was in his previous life, and refuses to let uncertainty or resentment over his sealed memories control him.
  • Deng Yin and Stone God Princess work in tandem, combining forceful anger with tender nostalgia. When Shi Zhu resists both, they abandon recruitment and move to kill him.
  • Chishi Divine Monarch and Nine-Li Divine Lord, though not the targets, are disturbed by the demonic attack’s spillover. They retreat and struggle to suppress the anger and longing it awakens in them.

Significant themes

  • Self-cultivation versus manipulation: Shi Zhu’s integrated spirit and qi let him withstand magic that would overwhelm most cultivators.
  • Identity across lives: Shi Zhu’s declaration that the present Shi Zhu is not the former Kuzhu affirms that past memories do not wholly define his current self.
  • Temptation and attachment: Stone God Princess weaponizes beautiful memories, while Shi Zhu’s steadiness shows that affection for the past need not become dependence on it.
  • Competing spiritual ideals: The chapter contrasts Buddhist renunciation, demonic ambition, and the Orthodox Mystic Sect’s cultivation of inner nature and vital existence.

Ch. 714Demon Prison

Plot points and events

  • Deng Yin and Stone God Princess overpower Shi Zhu with the Blood Demon Forbidden Net. Shibi Old Man interrupts, breaks their control of the fight, and has Shi Zhu confined in his Demon Prison while he and the others discuss an alliance.
  • Shi Zhu eventually breaks free of the prison’s restraints. Inside, he discovers Ruan Zheng, an Emei disciple, pinned to a wall and tortured by Asura Blood Flame.
  • Ruan Zheng explains how Emei’s elite disciples pursued Red Lotus Old Demon into Kunlun. The ensuing battles destroyed Red Lotus’s grotto-heaven and Sand God Boy’s palace. Broken-Head Monk was killed, while Red Lotus survived and later restored his body; the Yi brothers were recaptured, and Ruan Zheng was seized while trying to save fellow disciples.
  • Stone God Princess had deliberately brought Ruan Zheng to Shibi as a gift, knowing his past connection to Shibi’s daughter, Mingshu. Shibi imprisoned him after he refused to marry her.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shibi Old Man reveals that he built the prison to contain twelve demons he had severed from himself while pursuing Buddhist practice. He later returned to the demonic path and released them. He now pressures Ruan Zheng to marry Mingshu, presenting the match as both a promise from a past life and a way to secure her future.
  • Shi Zhu remains defiant under attack and prison confinement. He corrects Ruan Zheng’s use of his former name, insisting that he is now Shi Zhu, not Kuzhu.
  • Ruan Zheng is enduring severe torture but refuses to abandon his aspiration to ascend for the sake of marrying Mingshu. He admits that their meeting and past relationship bind them, yet argues they should part ways.
  • Stone God Princess uses her knowledge of Ruan Zheng’s history to serve her political aims, handing him over to help win Shibi’s alliance.

Significant themes

  • The cost of ambition: Ruan Zheng’s pursuit of ascension conflicts with his past bond to Mingshu, while Shi Zhu’s resistance pits him against powerful alliances.
  • Fate, promises, and personal choice: Shibi treats Ruan Zheng’s past-life vows as binding; Ruan Zheng rejects that claim and insists on choosing his own path.
  • Power and coercion: Political alliances, imprisonment, and torture are used to control others.
  • Identity and change: Shi Zhu’s insistence on his present name highlights his refusal to be defined by his former identity.

Ch. 715The Witch

Key plot points

  • Ruan Zheng recounts how he and several companions were expelled from their sect after accidentally killing an overseas Loose Immortal. He was sentenced to three lifetimes of reincarnation before he could return.
  • Now that Ruan has recovered his memories, he has renounced romance in favor of attaining heavenly immortality. Shibi Old Man, unwilling to accept Ruan’s rejection of his daughter Mingshu, has imprisoned and tortured him in the Demon Prison.
  • Shi Zhu recognizes the prison’s formation and frees Ruan from its bindings. He explains that his teacher, the Primordial Yang Adept, sent him to help—and suspects Shibi has arranged for him to take Mingshu away as a future escape route for her.
  • Mingshu appears at the prison wall, wounded and weeping. She says she tried to persuade her father to release Ruan and has vowed to share his fate through a life-bound god-demon sacrifice: if Ruan dies, she will die too.
  • Ruan urges her not to sacrifice herself, but remains committed to his spiritual path. He believes he must use the three years Shibi has given him to purify his remaining yin and attain pure yang.
  • Shi Zhu says he cannot undo Mingshu’s vow; only his teacher may be powerful enough to separate her from the god-demon. He then learns that Shibi is currently locked in a magical dispute with his martial uncle, the Fire-Spirit Divine Lord.

Character developments and interactions

  • Ruan Zheng is resolved to pursue immortality despite his love for Mingshu and the danger of the torture. He feels compassion for her but believes attachment could prevent him from perfecting his Yang Spirit.
  • Shi Zhu appears markedly warmer, more cheerful, and broad-minded than he was in his previous life as Old Man Withered Bamboo. He credits the Primordial Yang Adept’s guidance and protection with changing him, and acts generously toward Ruan despite their past.
  • Mingshu demonstrates fierce devotion, accepting a potentially fatal sacrifice rather than abandon Ruan. Her love conflicts with Ruan’s determination to renounce romantic desire.
  • Ruan’s conversation with Shi Zhu turns from cautious gratitude to an urgent plea for help for Mingshu. Shi Zhu is sympathetic but acknowledges the limits of his power.

Significant themes

  • Renunciation versus love: Ruan’s spiritual ambition clashes with his genuine affection for Mingshu.
  • Reincarnation and change: Past-life loyalties and deeds endure, but Shi Zhu’s transformation shows that a person’s character can change across lives.
  • Debt and forgiveness: Shi Zhu’s gratitude to his teacher contrasts with the old grievances and obligations shaping the conflict.
  • Sacrifice and fate: Both Ruan and Mingshu accept the possibility of death—he as a spiritual tribulation, she through her vow—while Shi Zhu’s arrival hints that their fates may yet be altered.

Ch. 716Parting Ways

Chapter Summary: “Parting Ways”

Key plot points and events

  • Shi Zhu assures Mingshu that her father sent him to rescue both her and Ruan Zheng. Though Mingshu doubts he can escape the Great Asura Formation, Shi Zhu begins breaking through the demon prison.
  • Using the Nine Palaces Strange Gates Formation, the Xuanyuan Divine Sword, and the Six Roots Purity Bamboo, Shi Zhu withstands the prison’s escalating defenses and traps Shibi Old Man in a maze of distorted space and time.
  • Shi Zhu calls to Mingshu, who chooses to leave with him for a future with Ruan Zheng. He then breaks through the prison and carries them into the sky.
  • Deng Yin and his allies attack, but Shi Zhu counters them with his sword and a storm of more than a hundred powerful Dual-Pole Magnetic Divine Thunder pearls. He escapes north toward Emei Mountain, confounding the pursuers, who had expected him to flee south.
  • In the chaos, Fire-Spirit Divine Lord also escapes from the Demon Palace. Shibi Old Man claims he is now joining Deng Yin’s faction, while concealing that he had arranged for the two fellow disciples to back opposing sides.
  • Fire-Spirit Divine Lord heads to Shi Feiyang and openly chooses to abandon the Asura path for the Orthodox Mystic Sect. Shi Feiyang advises him to reincarnate so he can avoid the coming tribulations and later rebuild his cultivation more effectively. Fire-Spirit accepts, gives Shi Feiyang his belongings to safeguard, and asks to become his disciple in his next life.

Character developments and interactions

  • Mingshu moves from grief and disbelief to trust and decisive action. She accepts Shi Zhu’s rescue because she wants a future with Ruan Zheng.
  • Shi Zhu demonstrates calm confidence and formidable strategic skill, protecting both companions while escaping a prison designed to hold powerful god-demons.
  • Ruan Zheng, weakened and unable to stand unaided, depends on Shi Zhu’s help and is carried to safety with Mingshu.
  • Shibi Old Man is exposed as a cautious opportunist: he has allowed Mingshu to leave and arranged for himself and Fire-Spirit to support different factions, ensuring their lineage may survive whichever side wins.
  • Fire-Spirit Divine Lord makes a genuine break with his past. Though trained in demonic arts, he has long admired the Orthodox Mystic Sect and now willingly accepts reincarnation as the route to joining Shi Feiyang’s lineage.
  • Shi Feiyang receives Fire-Spirit warmly and offers a practical path forward, while Fire-Spirit’s devotion reflects the impression left by Shi Feiyang’s earlier display of power.

Significant themes

  • Parting and divided loyalties: Mingshu leaves her former life for a future with Ruan Zheng, while Shibi and Fire-Spirit deliberately choose different sides.
  • Pragmatism amid impending catastrophe: Characters make calculated choices—escape, defection, or reincarnation—to survive the coming heavenly and demonic tribulations.
  • Transformation and new beginnings: Fire-Spirit’s decision to reincarnate represents a chance to shed his old path and begin again within a different spiritual tradition.
  • Trust and commitment: Mingshu’s choice to follow Shi Zhu, and Fire-Spirit’s faith in Shi Feiyang, mark decisive commitments to new futures.

Ch. 717The Jade Casket and Golden Saber

Key plot points and events

  • Fire-Spirit Divine Lord, awed by Shi Feiyang’s righteous solar-flame technique, chooses to end his life with his own demon fire and be reincarnated. Shi Feiyang seals his memories; Lin Han guides his spirit into the womb of a woman in Evernight City. The child is born a girl with exceptional spiritual potential, and Lin Han accepts her as a disciple.
  • Shi Zhu arrives at Emei Mountain with the injured Ruan Zheng and Mingshu. Emei’s leaders welcome him and treat the wounded, but learn that Shi Feiyang cannot come to help against Blood God Son Deng Yin.
  • Emei reveals its secret weapon: a jade casket containing a golden saber, left by Elder Longbrow to punish a traitor. The Emei elders have strengthened it with their great formation. They hope its first strike can kill Deng Yin, who knows of the saber but does not expect it to threaten him.
  • Deng Yin avoids a direct assault on Emei’s protective formation and instead captures 216 villagers in his Demon Net. He threatens to slaughter them and nearby communities unless Emei’s disciples come out to die.
  • Seeing the attack, Emei’s leaders conclude they must fight. Qi Shouming proposes combining their forces, drawing Deng Yin into the formation, and using the golden saber. Li Yingqiong eagerly agrees to lead the charge.

Character developments and interactions

  • Fire-Spirit Divine Lord’s desire to learn Shi Feiyang’s immortal art drives his decision to reincarnate; Shi Feiyang arranges for him to be reborn and trained without taking on another disciple himself.
  • Shi Zhu serves as the link between Shi Feiyang and Emei, conveying that his master trusts the sect to find a way to defeat Deng Yin. The Emei elders are disappointed but accept that they must act without his help.
  • Qi Shouming, now cultivating as a yang spirit after losing his body, explains the golden saber’s history and helps formulate Emei’s strategy.
  • Li Yingqiong’s anger at Deng Yin’s cruelty highlights her enduring hatred of evil and readiness to risk herself in battle.
  • Deng Yin uses captured civilians to pressure Emei, revealing his willingness to terrorize innocents in pursuit of his demonic goal.

Significant themes

  • Redemption and karmic return: Fire-Spirit Divine Lord uses his own demon fire to repay some of the harm he caused, then returns to life with a chance to follow a different path.
  • Righteousness under pressure: Emei must choose between its own survival and defending helpless villagers.
  • The limits of strength and preparation: The golden saber may work only once, while Emei’s formidable formation cannot by itself guarantee victory.
  • Good and evil in contrast: Shi Feiyang’s radiant, righteous flame stands against Deng Yin’s plan to turn the world into a demon realm.

Ch. 718The Power of the True Edict

Plot and events

  • Deng Yin begins his campaign to demonize the world by slaughtering villagers and transforming their bodies and souls into blood figures, which he then sets alight.
  • The atrocities enrage the Emei disciples, but an argument breaks out when Li Yingqiong blames Shi Feiyang for once releasing Deng Yin. Shi Zhu counters that the orthodox sects helped drive his master toward the Demonic Path. Qi Shouming ends the dispute, insisting the factions unite against the present catastrophe.
  • Deng Yin explains that his vendetta stems from the deaths of the women he loved and his belief that Shi Feiyang repeatedly deceived and exploited him. He claims to have mastered the Blood Shadow Divine Skill without the mutilation required in his previous life.
  • Emei’s forces launch a coordinated attack. The Three Immortals and Two Elders try to trap Deng Yin in a Dust-Mote Formation, while the others engage Stone God Princess, Chishi Divine Monarch, Nine-Li Divine Lord, and Shibi Old Man. Shi Zhu faces Shibi.
  • Deng Yin evades the formation by splitting into numerous dangerous blood doubles and repeatedly targeting weaker disciples. The battle becomes a chaotic struggle, with Emei unable to pin him down.
  • Perfected Miaoyi anticipates Deng Yin’s next attack on Lei Qu’e and secretly gives him the Imperial Mansion Heavenly Script Tusita True Edict. When Deng Yin lunges, the edict releases Grand Purity Divine Light and envelops him. The chapter ends as this powerful divine relic is brought against the Blood God.

Character developments and interactions

  • Shi Zhu defends Shi Feiyang’s past, emphasizing how persecution by the orthodox factions helped shape his choices. He later takes on Shibi Old Man directly.
  • Qi Shouming acts as mediator, suppressing old grievances and organizing the defense.
  • Deng Yin is shown as both merciless and deeply resentful: he frames his atrocities as revenge against Shi Feiyang and his lineage, while boasting of his renewed demonic power.
  • Li Yingqiong and Zhou Qingyun direct their fury at Stone God Princess, attacking her together with the Purple and Azure Swords.
  • Perfected Miaoyi protects the vulnerable Lei Qu’e through a carefully timed ruse, turning Deng Yin’s habit of exploiting weaknesses against him.

Significant themes

  • Revenge and responsibility: The characters dispute who bears responsibility for the catastrophe, linking present violence to past persecution and betrayal.
  • Unity over old feuds: Qi Shouming argues that opposing the Blood Demon must take precedence over sectarian resentment.
  • The cost of vengeance: Deng Yin’s grievance may explain his hatred, but his mass slaughter shows how revenge has become indiscriminate cruelty.
  • Power and fate: The True Edict’s authority adapts to Qi Shouming’s changed status yet retains immense divine force, suggesting that power and responsibility can endure even as circumstances shift.

Ch. 719Blood Demon Heart-Linking Great Method

Plot and key events

  • Deng Yin attacks but is trapped by the Great Void True Edict, whose Haotian Emperor Seal pins down his true body. Qi Shouming’s Golden Saber repeatedly cuts him apart, preventing his pieces from rejoining and threatening to leave him sealed.
  • Stone God Princess abandons her fight with Li Yingqiong and Zhou Qingyun to save Deng Yin. Using the Blood God Scripture’s Blood Demon Great Method, she absorbs his scattered forms and regenerates him alongside herself.
  • The demons escape, though Deng Yin remains disoriented by the Emperor Seal inside his mind. Angry but wary of Qi Shouming, he leads Red Corpse, Jiulie, and Shipi away rather than counterattacking.
  • The immortals recover the slain villagers’ souls, cleanse them of demonic energy, and arrange for Buddhist rites to guide them toward reincarnation.
  • At the Five Palaces of Primordial Origin, Qi Shouming urges Emei to join the broader resistance against the demons. Shi Zhu explains that Shi Feiyang cannot leave Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain while guiding immortals through their tribulations, and proposes that the Central Land’s immortals temporarily unite with Buddhist leaders.
  • Qi reveals that the True Edict was destroyed. He has lost both a powerful weapon against Deng Yin and a shortcut to his future heavenly appointment. Shi Zhu suggests moving Emei to Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain; Qi doubts they have time, predicting the Azure Emperor’s son will soon arrive and demand Emei join his sect.

Character developments and interactions

  • Qi Shouming proves resourceful and courageous, but his victory comes at great personal cost. The Emei disciples feel gratitude, grief, anger, and shame over what he has sacrificed for them.
  • Deng Yin is exposed as vulnerable to the True Edict and Golden Saber, despite his regenerative power. His fury toward Qi Shouming is tempered by fear and caution.
  • Stone God Princess shows fierce loyalty to Deng Yin, rescuing him at the cost of abandoning her fight with the Emei disciples.
  • Shi Zhu acts as intermediary between Shi Feiyang and Emei, making clear that Emei must either take responsibility in the coming crisis or openly refuse.
  • Qi and Shi Zhu agree on the need for cooperation but confront the difficulty of uniting the factions while powerful threats continue to gather.

Significant themes

  • Cooperation and responsibility: Emei’s status as a major orthodox sect carries obligations; hiding from the crisis is no longer acceptable.
  • Sacrifice and consequence: Qi Shouming’s aid costs him his body, the True Edict, and possibly a higher heavenly appointment.
  • Power balanced by vulnerability: Deng Yin’s apparent immortality can be checked by specialized divine tools, though his allies can still rescue him.
  • Uncertainty and approaching conflict: With Shi Feiyang unable to intervene and the Azure Emperor’s son expected to pressure Emei, the immortals face a looming test of unity.

Ch. 720Longbrow's instructions

Key plot points and events

  • The Emei leaders consult Elder Longbrow through the Jade Casket’s flying Golden Saber. He warns that the coming cosmic calamity will be exceptionally severe: an Emei grotto-heaven built within the Five Palaces of Primordial Origin would collapse, leaving those below heavenly-immortal level to become decaying zombies. Emei must ultimately seek refuge in Shi Feiyang’s Divine Dragon World.
  • Longbrow also warns that Deng Yin has joined forces with Stone God Princess to cultivate the Blood God Scripture. He may become nearly impossible to defeat if he finds Red Flower Princess and combines the Scripture’s upper and lower portions. Emei’s priority must be to locate her and prevent their union.
  • The Emei diviners confirm that Red Flower Princess has fled after Master Youtan drove her from Xie Ying’s body, but cannot determine where she is. Shi Zhu reports what happened to Xie Ying, shocking those close to the Xie sisters, then returns to Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain.
  • At Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain, Shi Feiyang gathers many cultivators to face their converging tribulations together. The combined ordeal will be more powerful than their separate trials, but surviving it may transform the mountain into an immortal blessed land and prepare it for a future grotto-heaven or ascension.
  • Shi Feiyang arranges eight divine peaks around Copper Coconut Island in a Nine Palaces and Eight Trigrams formation. He presides over the central altar, while trusted followers guard its gates and immortals occupy the surrounding peaks.
  • The tribulation begins with individual trials. On Copper Coconut Island, ghost-path and demonic cultivators are struck first. Tang Shi and Sui Yin, former disciples of evil masters who have since returned to the righteous path, face lightning on an exposed ridge. Tang Shi uses five-element spirit stones to shield them, while the ordeal also tests and may strengthen their bodies, spirits, and magical treasures.

Character developments and interactions

  • Qi Shouming, Xuanzhenzi, and Xun Lanyin receive Longbrow’s grave warnings but conceal their source, presenting them to the others as the results of divination.
  • Shi Zhu serves as a link between Emei and Shi Feiyang’s group: he reports Longbrow’s message, explains Red Flower Princess’s attack on Xie Ying, and then returns to Heaven Beyond Divine Mountain.
  • Shi Feiyang takes responsibility for the gathered cultivators’ shared ordeal, deliberately placing himself at its central and most dangerous point despite having earned enough merit to ascend with little difficulty.
  • Tang Shi and Sui Yin have progressed from serving evil masters to diligent study of Taoist arts under Lin Han. Trusting their teachers’ judgment, they accept a dangerous high-ground position to use the tribulation as a test of their cultivation.
  • Lin Han, Deng Bagu, Fire Wuhai, and Shi Zhu support Shi Feiyang’s preparations by guarding the altar’s gates.

Significant themes

  • Collective risk and mutual aid: The gathered cultivators combine their strengths, but their shared fate makes the total tribulation more dangerous.
  • Transformation through adversity: The calamity is both a threat and a potential purification, capable of elevating people, treasures, and the land itself.
  • Limits of power and foresight: Even Elder Longbrow cannot offer a solution to the Blood God Scripture, and the diviners cannot locate Red Flower Princess.
  • Redemption and earned trust: Tang Shi and Sui Yin’s return from evil practices is reflected in their willingness to face hardship as part of their renewed path.
  • Preparation against overwhelming danger: Both Emei and Shi Feiyang’s allies respond to looming threats through divination, planning, and cooperation.
