History

Foundation and early inheritance

The founding patriarch established Truth-Seeking Abbey on Floating Cloud Mountain. A ritual sword made from lightning-struck jujube wood became the token passed between successive abbots. Xuanming’s father was the previous abbot, and Xuanming himself was born, raised, and grew old within the abbey 2 4.

By Xuanxu’s tenure as third abbey master, the lineage was more than 150 years old but remained a small sect with limited reserves. Xuanming changed its prospects by donating the Yin-Yang Foundation Establishment Manual, which he had developed through five years of secluded study. The leaders concealed the gift and circulated a less remarkable account of his breakthrough to avoid attracting powerful outsiders 2.

Chen clan conflict and outside scrutiny

The abbey and the Chen Residence had previously coexisted peacefully and cooperated in flood control. Relations deteriorated when the Chens sought one of the abbey’s Heaven and Earth Academy places, first through an attempted discipleship arrangement and then through a direct request. Xuanming rejected Chen Qingshu as a disciple, while Xuanxu refused to surrender an Academy place 20 22 23 25.

After Xuanming killed Old Master Chen, the abbey surrounded the Chen Residence and sent Xuan Kong to obtain an Execution Warrant. The resulting investigation uncovered links between the Chen clan, Wang Sheng, and the Wang Family of Boat Mountain. Xuanming treated the larger conspiracy as a theory rather than proven fact and halted further inquiries to avoid provoking a stronger family 27 30 33.

Chang’anzi’s success at the Dao Origin Assembly and Xuanming’s growing reputation drew attention to the abbey’s superior teachings. Challengers, treasure-seekers, and assassination plots followed. The abbey worked with the Chu clan to expose Wang Sheng’s misconduct and put public and institutional pressure on him 43 44 63 68.

Becoming a major sect

Pressure from other Daoist lineages over the foundation method prompted Xuanming to establish a controlled Dao debate and eligibility trials rather than surrender the teaching outright. The arrangement required reciprocal contributions and allowed the abbey to preserve its most demanding manual for qualified members 53.

The abbey’s major-sect promotion ceremony combined official assessment with public blessings. Its Daoists formed a huge sword through the Eight Trigrams Sword Art, marked the new seal, and burned the blade as an offering that bestowed vitality and well-being on nearby villages. Afterward, Xuanming left everyday management to Xuanxu and eventually departed to cultivate through travel 100 101.

Demon tide and the Peaceful Heaven rebellion

During the demon assault on Floating Cloud Mountain, rumors about Chang Ning’s half-demon origins and family connection to a Peaceful Heaven Sect Guardian undermined outside support. The True Dragon urged Xuanming to surrender her to save the abbey’s reputation. He refused, and the Daoists continued defending the region despite severe losses 154.

Xuanming drove back the True Dragon by detonating the Mountains and Rivers Diagram. The abbey survived, but its formations collapsed and many disciples were killed, unconscious, or gravely wounded. Nie Tian later inspected the battlefield, stood guard during the survivors’ recovery, and publicly defended their sacrifices against unverified accusations 156 157.

The abbey then sheltered refugees, restored farmland, purified damaged land, and performed rites for the dead. Xuanming led Xuan Yin, Xuan Su, Changqingzi, and Chang Ning to rescue threatened sects and fight Peaceful Heaven forces. Its service during the rebellion subsequently earned imperial resources, scriptures, titles, and permission to build temples and shrines 158 159 182.

Top-lineage promotion and independence

After seven years away, Xuanming returned to a mountain revered throughout the Four Commanderies. The abbey had already surpassed many top lineages in practical strength but lacked the formal title. A million-volume Daoist Canon from the Peaceful Heaven Sect further expanded its inheritance 257 258.

The next promotion ceremony brought together ancient lineages, powerful cultivators, clans, and imperial representatives. Li Zizai deliberately made the gathering grand enough to discourage interference from Great Xuan. The Court recognized the abbey as a top Dao lineage, while its senior leaders arranged to hand their offices to younger successors 258 259.

The younger leadership later rejected an imperial grandson’s application and announced that imperial scions and noble descendants would no longer be admitted. Changchunzi also committed to stronger rules and the removal of divisive influences. Xuanming approved of the younger generation taking responsibility and did not intervene 271.

Netherworld expansion

The abbey’s involvement in establishing the Underworld Court brought new territory, enemies, and allies. Divine emperors, the Phoenix Clan, and other powerful supporters helped break a Ghost King siege of Floating Cloud Mountain. Taiyi’s conversion of hostile ghosts helped secure Netherworld territory for the abbey, while the coalition continued expanding the Underworld Court 279.

Later, Houtu’s manifestation strengthened the Underworld Court and helped Xuanxu’s group advance their Earth Immortal studies. Their eventual transformation of Floating Cloud Mountain into a blessed land gave the abbey a new spiritual foundation alongside its growing body of True Persons and True Lords 286 290.

Recruitment and Inheritance

Admission trials

Applicants are judged principally by perseverance, conduct, and comprehension rather than family background or innate aptitude 188.

Trial Assessment Documented requirements
Heaven-Ascending Ladder Perseverance Climb from the mountain’s foot to the Welcoming Pavilion at a height of 2,500 zhang within four hours 188.
Heart-Entrapping Formation Self-control and moral judgment Face temptations and difficult choices. Li Zizai’s trials test generosity, loyalty, honesty, moderation, and practical judgment 188 189.

  • Named discipleship: Li Zizai begins under Xuanming with ordinary chores alongside his studies before later receiving inner-disciple status 189 257.
  • Scripture access: The Scripture Pavilion’s second floor contains precious and unique texts; access requires reaching at least the hundred-day barrier 4.
  • Inheritance safeguards: Xuanming proposes a Legacy Hall that selects suitable inheritors according to their gifts and natures, supported by standardized transmission rules 183.

  • Later political restriction: Imperial scions and noble descendants are excluded to protect the sect from court rivalries and factional influence 271.

External foundation-method trials

The trials offered to outside seekers are separate from ordinary admission 53.

  • Interested lineages must first contribute five hundred Daoist scriptures and stake appropriate cultivation insights or a comparable method in a Dao debate 53.
  • Winning grants only eligibility to attempt three Dao-stele trials assessing character, perseverance, and comprehension 53.
  • Applicants must not yet have established their foundations; unsuccessful candidates may attempt the trials at most three times 53.
  • Participants must swear not to retaliate against the abbey 53.
  • A simplified foundation method can be shared while the exceptionally demanding Yin-Yang Manual remains reserved for the abbey’s most qualified disciples 53.

  • During that investigation, the senior Daoists reason that an ordinary outside ghost could not ascend Floating Cloud Mountain because of its Dao qi and divine protection 243.
  • Li Zizai’s unusually high generational placement lets him address senior elders as “senior brothers” and fellow new recruits as “martial nephews” immediately after his admission 189.
