Background / History

Xuanming spent five years studying in the Scripture Pavilion before his late-life breakthrough. His sudden advancement generated competing stories within the abbey, including the unsupported belief that he had taken a miraculous pill left by the previous abbot. The leaders concealed his contribution of a superior foundation-establishment method 2 43.

His present birth is later revealed through the River of Time: his adoptive father welcomed him as a third-generation disciple of Truth-Seeking Abbey. Looking farther upstream, Xuanming discovered repeated lives in different races and circumstances, all marked by pursuit of the Dao and death, frequently as a sacrifice 260.

Among these former identities was Qiu Ming, the last Divine Emperor of Great Sheng. The Peaceful Heaven Dao Master explains that Qiu Ming was killed by Ji Yuan and Zhong Neng, who then rewrote history to portray him as a tyrant. Xuanming is only part of the Immeasurable Dao Patriarch’s reincarnation, rather than the Patriarch’s complete returning self 262 284.

Whether Xuanming embodies the Patriarch’s benevolent or evil thoughts remains disputed. He challenges others to judge his deeds rather than presume his nature, while the Peaceful Heaven Dao Master argues that cooperation with him is necessary regardless of that uncertainty 293.

Appearance

  • Hair and beard: White hair, a grizzled or long beard, and bushy eyebrows 23 161.
  • Clothing: Commonly wears a gray Daoist robe and carries a fly-whisk 1 23.
  • Build and bearing: Elderly in appearance but healthy and vigorous; his deep, weathered eyes and natural Daoist bearing make him resemble an immortal sage 23.
  • Later presence: After settling the Heavenly Worthy manifestation into place, his bearing gains a warm, compassionate quality likened to a kindly grandfather 131.
  • Disguises: Can appear as an ordinary old Daoist, beggar, merchant, laborer, performer, or old tree demon; deliberately suppresses his powers to inhabit these roles 106 110 252 306.

Personality

Xuanming prioritizes understanding, cultivation principles, and durable foundations over collecting spectacular techniques. He postpones scripture study until adequately prepared, begins artifact work with manageable projects, and repeatedly consolidates gains before attempting another breakthrough 11 21 81 195.

His preference for peace does not make him passive. He protects the abbey decisively, refuses unwanted discipleship requests despite valuable gifts, and treats suspicious favors with scrutiny. Against enemies, he can be calculating and ruthless: he prolongs a duel to improve his techniques, binds a captured dragon to nourish the mountain, and uses the Peach Elder’s seized treasure to improve his tribulation prospects 23 26 161 246 280.

He combines compassion with irreverent humor. He distributes relief, respects mortals and cultivators as sharing the same essential spirit, and asks plants for assistance rather than forcibly taking their qi. He also cheats cruel wealthy people, plays pranks, and regularly disciplines juniors with forehead flicks 77 95 97 134 206.

Ordinary life is central to his cultivation. Food, scenery, festivals, manual labor, friendship, grief, and even foolish youthful fantasies become opportunities to temper his heart. Immortality does not erase his attachment to familiar companionship: after the final battle, he returns to wine, games, and teasing with his old fellow disciples 106 114 230 309.

Abilities & Skills

Yellow Court Scripture and Primordial Unity Cultivation

  • Scripture-derived insight: The Outer, Central, and Inner Yellow Court scriptures successively provide methods, divine abilities, cosmic insight, and higher-stage cultivation principles 5 121 251 283.
  • Primordial Unity Qi Formula: Refines external energy into magical power; Xuanming repeatedly develops its later stages rather than relying on a fully inherited method 46 252 283.
  • Solar, lunar, and stellar nourishment: Collects dawn purple qi, lunar essence, and starlight. Breathing practice eventually continues during sleep 21 75 161.
  • Energy purification: Uses his body as furnace and cauldron, yin-yang energy as fuel, and primordial chaos qi as flame to remove impurities from spirit-fruit energy 75.
  • Inner deity cultivation: The Eight Outer Visions True Method strengthens body, spirit, and power through visualization; later plans place the Five Elders in the viscera and Six Sovereigns in the bowels 5 133.

Swordsmanship and Martial Arts

  • Eight Trigrams Sword Art: Develops into Sword Dao realization and union of sword and self 21.
  • Sword Cliff: Creates three teaching marks with three strikes. Access is restricted by cultivation: below the third realm, third realm, and fourth realm respectively 16.
  • Remote sword command: Demonstrates attacks at three hundred li after reaching Qi Refining and kills his family’s firebird enemy from a thousand miles away 32 114.

  • Protective weather manipulation: Uses thunder to kill bandits and rain to extinguish a village’s fires after his Spirit Refining breakthrough 161.
  • Samadhi True Fire: Tempers flesh, clarifies the Dao heart, and purges primordial-spirit yin impurities. Its described ultimate potential includes scorching space, but that is not presented as his initial mastery 121 221.
  • Limits of purification: Samadhi True Fire alone cannot remove all yin impurities; sustained cultivation and thunder are also required 221.
  • Artifact refinement: Employs martial and gentle flames according to the yin-yang nature of materials 92.

Heavenly Stems and Earthly Fiends Divine Powers

  • Complete repertoire: Completes thirty-six Heavenly Stems and seventy-two Earthly Fiends powers, understanding clear and turbid qi as complementary origins within Primordial Unity 252.
  • Universe in the Sleeve: Captures beings in a private space and later gathers stellar energy from a meteor shower 121 229.
  • Reversing Yin and Yang: Overturns the natural order of things 121.
  • Nine-Breath Qi Absorption: Draws large quantities of external spiritual energy to replenish and strengthen him 75 161.
  • Other documented arts: Great Five-Element Escape, Spirit-Driving Art, Dream-Weaving, Six Jia Strange Gates, Shifting Stars and Reversing the Dipper, mountain-moving arts, and Netherworld communication 177 182.
  • Chaos qi: Combines the paired powers into chaos currents; later uses them with time’s erosion to cleanse the Immeasurable Dao Patriarch’s severed arms 265 301.

  • Chaos regulation: Taiji Heaven and primordial unity contain and redirect chaos, allowing a world-threatening current to strengthen his inner realms instead 298.
