Background / History
Leadership of Truth-Seeking Abbey
Xuanxu is already abbey master when Xuanming presents the Yin-Yang Foundation Establishment Method. Unlike most of their fellow Daoists, he is among the few whom Xuanming considers genuinely close 2. He supplies the lightning-struck peachwood from which Xuanming can fashion a ritual sword, earning his senior brother’s appreciation for his thoughtfulness 4.
After Xuanming creates Sword Cliff, Xuanxu joins the senior Daoists in concealing its true origin. They present the sword marks as their collective work until Xuanming becomes a True Person 16. Xuanxu then orders the construction of a Dao Enlightenment Pavilion, Sword Discussion Platform, Spell-Dueling Ground, and other facilities beneath the cliff, turning the disciples’ enthusiasm into a lasting cultivation resource 18.
He also handles visitors and negotiations. When the Chen patriarch seeks to place his son under Xuanming’s tutelage, Xuanxu makes the introductions and then leaves the discussion to the prospective teacher and family 23.
Dao Origin Grand Gathering and Return Journey
Xuanxu personally leads the abbey’s delegation to Fengyang Commandery, accompanied by four fellow senior Daoists and ten disciples. As the head of a small faction, he cannot simply send representatives in his place 34. At the gathering, he reins in Xuan Kong and Xuan Yang’s bickering and reminds them to maintain proper bearing 39.
Three days later, he becomes a Qi Refining True Person at the Immortal Grove Inn. Despite his confidence and the party’s celebrations, he remains alert during the return journey because Xuanming warned that their good fortune concealed danger 60.
A Draped Robe Tower assassin attacks Chang’anzi with Soul-Tethering Threads. Warned by the sword intent within his Inherited Dharma Sword, Xuanxu intercepts the attack and immediately releases Xuanming’s stored sword power, killing her before a prolonged fight can endanger the disciples 60.
A Primordial Heaven flood serpent then attacks. Xuanxu leads the party’s counterattack, but the serpent breaks their formation and leaves everyone else temporarily unable to fight. He stands his ground, prepared to die rather than let it reach his disciples. Heavenly lightning kills the serpent before it can strike him 60.
Diplomacy and Sect Development
When the Wang clan delivers Spring Blossom Essence as reparations, Xuanxu recognizes that the valuable treasure could attract hostile attention to the abbey. He brings it to Xuanming for safekeeping and leaves additional Profound-grade treasures with him after hearing his defensive plans 74.
The senior Daoists also identify an attempt to sow resentment between the abbey and the Chu clan. Xuanxu visits the Chu clan to explain the situation directly; his cheerful return suggests the meeting went well 75.
At the abbey’s promotion ceremony, Xuanxu welcomes the guests and invites the Heaven and Earth Academy’s envoy to conduct the assessment 101. Later, he urges his fellow Daoists not to mistake Xuanming’s personal strength for the strength of the entire lineage: the abbey needs capable successors and a True Person in every generation 122.
War and the Earth Immortal Path
During the confrontation with the True Dragon, Xuanxu takes over command of the abbey’s formation while Xuanming engages the dragon. He directs repeated attacks against the demons and coordinates the deployment of the Eight Trigrams and Four-Images formations 150 155. In the ensuing wartime preparations, he remains responsible for overseeing the abbey’s overall situation 159.
He later joins six fellow True Persons in Xuanming’s collective treasure-forging project. The seven contribute formation runes, laws, spiritual perception, and materials gathered during their travels. Although the work causes severe pain and repeated exhaustion, none withdraws 267.
During the assault on Floating Cloud Mountain surrounding Xuanming’s Great Power breakthrough, Xuanxu and the other True Persons purge disloyal members while Taishang protects the abbey 282. Their cultivation continues under Xuanming and Houtu’s guidance, and Xuanxu is eventually explicitly identified as an Earth Immortal 285 286 303.
He remains part of Xuanming’s circle of old companions long afterward, sharing relaxed reunions following the defeat of the Immeasurable Dao Patriarch and before Xuanming’s final departure into chaos 309 310.
Appearance
- Middle-aged appearance when he emerges from his Qi Refining breakthrough 60.
- Square, dignified face that appears imposing even without anger 25.
- Upright bearing, with a gentle and composed manner while preparing tea 25.
- Hair and beard bristle when he angrily confronts the assassin attacking Chang’anzi 60.
Personality
Xuanxu is practical, observant, and considerate. Xuanming notes that he is busy with duties and rarely disturbs another cultivator’s peace without a reason. His smooth handling of guests and his expansion of Sword Cliff demonstrate a talent for administration and recognizing useful opportunities 18 23 25.
He trusts Xuanming without treating that trust as a substitute for judgment. Against the Draped Robe Tower assassin, he recognizes that he is newly advanced and outmatched, then uses his strongest safeguard immediately rather than risk the party in an extended duel 60. He likewise favors candid diplomacy over allowing the Wang clan’s manipulation to damage relations with the Chu clan 75.
His responsibility toward the disciples can outweigh his own survival. When the flood serpent disables the rest of the party, he resolves to fight to the death 60. His concern also extends to the abbey’s future: he insists that its lasting strength must come from collective effort and continuity across generations, not dependence on Xuanming alone 122.
He shares Xuanming’s love of tea. Whenever they drink together, Xuanxu takes the initiative in preparing it, using practiced, careful movements and offering his senior brother the first cup 25.

Notable Quotes
“A single strand cannot make a thread, nor a lone tree a forest. Junior brothers, we must redouble our efforts. If Truth-Seeking Abbey is to preserve its legacy without interruption, with a True Person presiding over every generation, we cannot rely solely on senior brother Xuanming.” 122
