Background / History

The Great Thief of Four Kingdoms

Before meeting Zhang Yuan, Xiao Yuanjun spent five years stealing cultivation forces from aristocratic clans. Her activities extended across Ling, Jing, Wen, and Ya, where every renowned immortal clan had lost at least one Earthly Baleful Force to her. The Wenshui Deng and Ya Cui each also lost a Heavenly Dipper 19 256.

Her ability to enter and leave clan estates despite being only a Qi Refinement cultivator made her notorious. The clans planned a joint karmic divination by their Celestial People, but she disappeared so thoroughly that they could find no trace. Her portrait later appears at Jianning City’s guarded entrance 19 34.

Taking Zhang Yuan as Her Disciple

Xiao encounters the badly injured Zhang Yuan in a ruined temple and tests him with an unconventional account of cultivation’s social hierarchy: ant, fellow daoist, and senior. His addition of the “young friend realm”—a weak cultivator with powerful backing—amuses her enough to offer him discipleship. She also fulfills his requested revenge by killing Li Jiehua 2.

Her choice of disciple is connected to her own Heaven-and-Earth Trial. She later discovers that Zhang can learn her cultivation method after hearing it once, regarding him as a treasure the Li Clan discarded. His developing divine abilities eventually allow her to complete the Disciple Trial 7 31.

Conflict with the Eastern Bian Li Clan

Rather than flee Li Jiehua’s pursuers immediately, Xiao conceals herself and Zhang beneath her robe and infiltrates the enemy’s own city. She subsequently protects him from Li Jieyan and the Chu cultivators, killing Li Jieyan during the fighting at the Third Princess’s Residence 4 17 19.

Her contest with Li Houjin over the Iron Chain Baleful Force nearly costs her life. She wins the prize through temporary Dao-status elevation, an illusion, and Zhang’s coordinated escape—not by defeating the Celestial Person directly. After her later breakthrough, Zhang’s continuing karmic connection indicates that she also escapes the Bian capital’s upheaval 24 34.

Travels and Protection of Her Disciple

Xiao continues advising Zhang across their journeys, arranging cultivation resources, assessing unfamiliar methods, and responding when his karmic connections suggest danger. At Junya Mountain, she intervenes against Deng Yici after sensing Zhang connect Myriad Coexistence to another person 48 120 148 223.

In the Mountain-Sea Black-Yellow Realm, she becomes entangled with the Heaven-Cutting Immortal Sect and joins Zhang during the Hengyang Lu conflict. Later, she rescues the blinded Chu Qingyuan from her pursuers. She refuses Qingyuan’s request for discipleship but takes her along while searching for Zhang, ultimately bringing them together 295 307 492 531.

Attainment and Sun-Moon Cliff

During the Great Heng events, Xiao and Zhang compare suspicions about the imperial siblings and act together amid the royal family’s political struggle. Her later cultivation display draws the attention of True Lords who hope either to exploit her failed truth-seeking or kill her before a successful ascension is secure 571 639.

After becoming a True Lord, she attempts to address the ancient beings lingering around Zhang. Ye Xiangning escapes her divination by burning away an incarnation’s karma, while Xiao judges Chi Guanguan safe enough to remain. She then leaves for Sun-Moon Cliff to repay a debt to Li Huixi, first kissing Zhang on the cheek 642 643.

Appearance

  • Youthful, exceptionally beautiful face, with eyes distinguished by unwavering confidence. Zhang initially mistakes her for an ancient immortal who has regained her youth 2.
  • Approximately a head shorter than Zhang Yuan when not floating; her loose Daoist robe initially conceals her figure 2.
  • Patched gray Daoist robe in her early travels, recognizable enough for Zhang to identify her wanted portrait 34.
  • Celestial Azure Glazed Robe after becoming a Celestial Person; her self-fashioned temple statue also wears it 48 69.
  • For a banquet, tries five outfits before selecting a cloud-water-colored robe that complements Zhang’s white robe and preserves her preferred air of an exalted expert 567.

Personality

Xiao is supremely confident, theatrical, and pleased with her own accomplishments. She cultivates the appearance of a lofty expert, yet praise from Zhang readily makes her giggle, blush, or retreat in embarrassment. Around strangers, she is markedly cooler and more aloof 120 448 567 578.

Her boldness coexists with practical caution. She layers concealment over a sealed mountain refuge, admits that Li Houjin nearly killed her, and changes approach when the Marriage Contract proves beyond her strength. Even her brief suggestion of abandoning Zhang is immediately withdrawn in favor of investigating the danger 7 11 24.

Her loyalty is intensely selective. Chi Guanguan characterizes her as profoundly self-serving and regards Zhang as probably the only person she truly cares about; this is Chi’s assessment, rather than Xiao’s own description. Xiao is nevertheless willing to bear Zhang’s potentially lethal curse on herself and acts mercilessly against people who threaten him 269 449 577.

She is possessive about her place as Zhang’s master and suspicious of women approaching him. However, she also trusts his competence: when he says he can handle a confrontation alone, she leaves without demanding further explanation 295 327 588.

Abilities & Skills

Fivefold Body-Rending Qi

  • Offensive divine ability capable of attacking both the physical body and primordial spirit, enabling complete annihilation 73.
  • Injures Li Jieyan and helps suppress him alongside Chu Ruifeng and Chu Xiyin 17.
  • Later empowered by all three of Xiao’s divine wonders; a single gust grievously wounds three Celestial Person Perfection opponents and an Eclosion Peak opponent 638.

Ninefold Harmonizing Qi

  • Used alongside Fivefold Body-Rending Qi to pin down Li Jieyan and the two Chu cultivators 17.
  • Can be lent to Zhang through Myriad Coexistence; Xiao switches his mounted ability to it when she arrives to support him against the Wang Household 69.

Severing Past and Present, Leaving No Trace

  • Conceals appearance, aura, karmic traces, and heavenly secrets. Chapter 4 also calls it Severing Past and Present, Leaving or Staying 4 7 395.
  • At tenth-turn Qi Refinement, hides Xiao and Zhang from Li Houjin; against a Celestial Person’s attention, she describes the protection as giving them only a few breaths to react 4.
  • Creates the past-world illusion that Li Houjin attacks while her real body escapes 24.
  • Can graft Zhang’s karma onto herself, a method she prepares to use against Curse-Killing 269.
  • Is not universally impenetrable: Li Zhongshuang sees through it during Xiao’s earlier infiltration of the Li Clan 254.

Heaven-Sundering Four Absolutes Immortal Domain

  • Her fourth innate divine ability, formed from ten refined heavenly dipper and earthly baleful forces 24.
  • Originally raises Dao status to just below a Celestial Person’s; it provides no direct attack, defense, or concealment 24.
  • At that temporary status, lets her declare the Iron Chain Baleful Force to be in Zhang’s hand, causing it to appear there immediately 24.
  • Later becomes the name of her Foundation Establishment Dao Domain, hidden within her primordial spirit. Its temple contains statues of both master and disciple 48 295.

Dusk Veil

  • Xiao proposes using it to fool the Curse-Killing Art threatening Zhang 269.
  • Can grant Fivefold Body-Rending Qi and Zhang’s Three Calamities Return-to-Origin Divine Radiance the capabilities of Sword Qi, at the cost of reducing their killing power 397.

Myriad Forms Change

  • Exchanges the Magic Power inside four Mahayana cultivators with surrounding spiritual qi, making their bodies explode from within 448.
  • Exploits a limitation of the Outer Qi Refinement Path before Immortal Lord attainment: practitioners still depend on communion with heaven and earth rather than having mighty power wholly vested in themselves 448.

Jade Emperor’s Sojourn

  • Her third divine wonder, distinct from her Dao Domain 448.
  • Establishes a ten-thousand-li domain in which she manipulates the surroundings, strengthens other wonders, and seals spatial travel 449.
  • Turns a Bing Fire-enhanced sea of flames into an icy plain, then allows her to shrink Wenren Xixiang in her palm and crush both body and soul 448 449.
  • Has limits; Xiao believes no Celestial Person’s Daoist attainment can match hers sufficiently to escape it 449.

Daoist Comprehension and Mentorship

  • Explains cultivation-path differences, force combinations, cosmology, domain-forging, and the dangers surrounding True Lords’ metal positions 3 48 92 120.
  • Assesses cultivation methods and treasures for Zhang, and considers improving the divine-wonder method in the Nine Nether scripture 116 223 227.
  • Uses karmic calculation to locate emerging qi and formation cores 244 308 421.
  • Warns Zhang that revealing Read People to powerful cultivators could lead to his capture as a valuable cultivation resource 74.

Bright Yang and Manifested Declarations

  • Rejects the claim that she is Bright Yang reincarnated: ancient Bright Yang gathered within her because of her birth, rather than being the source of her identity or talent 638.
  • Declares that defeated enemies will die and enter the Nether Bureau, manifesting a Ghost Soldier to execute the sentence. The True Lord of Ten Thousand Cycles of Balance intervenes and dismisses it 638.
  • Gathers the complete ancient Bright Yang imago into her palm and refines it into her own Celestial Person imago 638.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Celestial Season Orbs — A set of twenty-four governing seasonal cycles and celestial phenomena, with stored East Sea water. Xiao gives twelve to Zhang and uses the orbs to extinguish Sun Wulie’s heart fire through wind and rain 74 95.
  • Celestial Season Orbs’ divine wonder — Makes Deng Yici’s grievous injury manifest as reality despite his attempt to dodge 148.
  • Record of Ancient Immortal Caves — Costly manual she gives Zhang to prepare him for Celestial Person attainment and the need to forge a Dao Domain within one hundred days 120.
  • Radiant Thunder Pivot Immortal-Shaking Scripture — Brought back by Zhang for her study despite its heavy karma; she values it more than the accompanying banner 149.
  • Flying sword gifted by Zhang — She prefers traveling through her own abilities while keeping the powerful sword safe 448.
  • Primordial Beginning Primordial Qi — Left behind for Zhang; conceals Ao Xiu’s karma and guides him through forty-nine days of comprehension, resulting in Reaching the Subtlety of Heaven 646.

Relationships

  • Zhang Yuan — Her sole disciple, whom she calls her Founding Grand Disciple. She states that he is her first and final disciple. Their bond develops from mentorship into unmistakable affection, including shared sleeping arrangements and her kiss on his cheek 2 256 492 643.
  • Li Huixi — A powerful figure she distrusts around Zhang, but to whom she owes a debt after attaining the Dao. At Sun-Moon Cliff, they argue over his claim to be Zhang’s betrothed and his decision to prevent her from helping Zhang 365 643 686.
  • Li Houjin — Recurring enemy who nearly kills her during the Iron Chain Baleful Force contest and attacks immediately after her Celestial Person breakthrough 24 32.
  • Li Zhongshuang — Previously sees through Xiao’s concealment. Xiao resents her presumed engagement to Zhang; later, Zhongshuang’s lesser yin cold qi enables Xiao’s completion of the five aggregates and six qi, creating a karmic debt 254 639.
  • Qin Jieyu — Suspected rival for Zhang’s loyalty and a potential danger. Xiao nevertheless cooperates with her to warn and watch over Zhang during his breakthrough 295 325 327.
  • Cui Yuanxi and Cui Zhaowei — Xiao is suspicious of their closeness to Zhang, but checks their safety during battle to prevent him from suffering another loss 149 362 449.
  • Chen Xinqiao — Receives Xiao’s sincere respect for her self-sacrifice. After becoming True Lord Miao Ling, Chen compensates Xiao for taking the sought-after Ren Water by offering Xin Metal 439.
  • Chu Qingyuan — Rescued after her household’s destruction and loss of sight. Xiao refuses to accept her as a disciple, but escorts her to Zhang and offers to avenge her household 492 514 531.
  • Chi Guanguan — Initially a suspicious ancient presence around Zhang. Xiao offers to live in his Dao Domain to monitor her, but later concludes that she is useful and safe enough to remain 540 643.
