Background / History
Encounters in Jianning and Dragon Creek City
Cui Yuanxi first meets Zhang Yuan in Jianning City, where he declines her invitation. Their early encounter also exposes the Aohai Cui’s status-conscious behavior: members of her party use whips to clear people from their path, something Zhang later contrasts with the conduct of the Ya East Cui 53 112 194.
In Dragon Creek City, she sneaks out with Xiao Shi to meet the “Wedding Robe Immortal Master,” entering the Chen family’s courtyard at night. Zhang introduces himself as Li Huixi, and she accepts the name without pressing him 56 57.
The visit coincides with the Wang Household’s attack. Yuanxi admits that she cannot summon help because no one knows she has left home; unknown to her, Cui Wenshan has secretly followed to protect her. After Zhang investigates the Wang ancestral hall, she calls Wenshan to hear his warning 58 61 62.
Confinement and Wartime Service
After being brought back to Life Continent Isle, Yuanxi is confined to the Cui residence. Zhang entrusts Chen Xinqiao to her; rather than personally supervise the girl, Yuanxi grants her unrestricted access to the estate and its resources 85.
War gives Yuanxi an opportunity to leave confinement as the Aohai Cui’s direct-line representative. She goes without Xiao Shi or Xinqiao and finds the assignment lonely until she meets Zhang again at Junya Mountain. Once she discovers his real surname, she visits Clearheart Residence to complain that he has deceived her throughout their friendship 103 112.
Celestial Attainment and the Assassination Plot
Yuanxi’s prospects make her a political target. Zhang suspects that rival clans intend to exploit her Heaven-and-Earth Trial to kill her; Lu Jianqing subsequently states that he has orders to join members of the Jingyang Li and Wenshui Deng in encircling and killing the Aohai Cui’s newly attained Celestial Person 157 159.
Zhang organizes protection for her breakthrough, helping remove the immediate dragon threat before she passes the Reverence Pass. Yuanxi thanks him sincerely and promises to remember his kindness for the rest of her life 160 164 165.
The Aohai Cui holds a Dharma Assembly to celebrate her advancement. What begins as a celebration becomes a major political gathering when several great houses send True Lords. Her father rewards Zhang for saving her while also trying to settle the personal debt between them 194 196 200.
Restricted Travel and the East Sea Journey
Celestial attainment does not free Yuanxi from family control. Her father tightens restrictions, and the clan’s True Lords discourage her pursuit of Zhang because an unidentified, exceptionally powerful person has an interest in him. Cui Wenshan takes the opposite position and deliberately creates opportunities for them to spend time together 361.
Chen Xinqiao’s revival temporarily diverts the Lords’ attention from Yuanxi, whose own truth-seeking remains years away. Later, Cloud Ao Ancestor authorizes Yuanxi to accompany Zhang toward the Upside-Down Sea and gives her a concealment Supreme Treasure. Her presence helps justify Aohai Cui protection for the journey and serves as a gesture of goodwill toward Xinqiao 425 441.
During the voyage’s fighting, Yuanxi and Cui Zhaowei drive off a South Sea True Dragon, then move to support Zhang. She also joins a coordinated ambush against Wenren Chiye and offers Zhang spirit medicines after seeing the destruction left by his battle 449 450 452 455.
Reunion and Stay at the Mysterious Court
Yuanxi later encounters Zhang aboard an Aohai Cui Magic Boat bound for the Southern Heaven Realm. Despite instructions to keep her whereabouts secret and avoid outsiders, she comes out to greet him, insisting that he does not count as an outsider 718.
At the Mysterious Court, she spends time with Zhang and Tong Ke and summons Xiao Shi from Ancestral Isle. She apologizes for making her maid undertake the long journey. During this stay, Yuanxi openly proposes seeking her father’s permission to become engaged to Zhang; he answers that he already has a fiancé 729 750 751 758.
Appearance
Cui Yuanxi is tall and graceful, with finely shaped shoulders, a slender waist, and poised movements 57.
- Face: Dark, willow-leaf brows and eyes compared to ripples across autumn waters; later descriptions emphasize her fair skin 57 112 718.
- Clothing: Appears in a gauzy turquoise gown, a luxurious deep-blue dress, and a pale-yellow enchanted dress 57 441 718.
- Accessories: Wears a jade bamboo hairpin during her concealed visit to Zhang at the Cui residence 441.
Personality
Yuanxi is lively, impulsive, and easily bored by confinement. She sneaks out, barges into courtyards, and resists being told where she may go. Her privileged upbringing initially leaves her simple-hearted and weak at scheming, but she recognizes an openly stated assassination plot and later credits months of chess with her father for sharpening her wit 56 108 155 159 361.
Her attachment to Zhang becomes increasingly direct. She moves from calling him her best friend to teasing him about thinking of him constantly and proposing marriage. Her loyalty outweighs material value: she rejects the Wenshui Deng’s superior hairpin, particularly because of their attempt to reshape Zhang’s Dao heart, while eagerly accepting his less valuable gift 209 417 758.
She can restrain her enthusiasm when ceremony demands it, greeting Zhang more formally in her father’s presence at the Dharma Assembly. She also shows consideration for others, including apologizing after mistaking Ao Xiu for a threat and acknowledging Xiao Shi’s exhausting journey to reach her 200 417 751.
