Power Progression
Li Thunder’s documented development occurs through its connection with Li Fuchan, rather than through independently stated cultivation ranks.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial thunder-script cultivation | 18 | Li Fuchan inscribes a thunder script in his qi sea, giving his magical power Li Thunder’s properties. He preserves his Three Lights by transferring them into Brow Peak. |
| Recognition and bestowed Dao attainment | 25 26 | His defiance of the Wisdom King draws Li Thunder’s gaze. The retained attainment greatly accelerates his subsequent lightning cultivation. |
| Lightning-Struck Wood Yang Aspect | 27 | Understanding a naturally lightning-struck tree reveals the aspect’s destructive force and surviving vitality, substantially deepening his magical power. |
| Manifestation of Lightning-Struck Wood | 36 | Full mastery of the Yang Aspect allows his Outer Scenery to manifest and generate magical power without laboriously stimulating his apertures. |
| Rift-transformation begins | 99 101 | Contrary Thunder tears open his Dao attainment. Renewed attention from Li Thunder breaks external constraints, while Changze and the gardenia’s protection give him an opportunity to transform the thunder. |
| Muffled Crow in Ambush | 102 | Lightning-Struck Wood shatters without reducing his cultivation. A concealed thunder aspect replaces it and becomes the name of his future Dao Fruit. |
| Hidden aspect retained after restarting | 103 104 | Li Fuchan retains the transformed thunder by choosing consciousness. He possesses the world’s deepest Li Thunder Dao attainment, but must rebuild his cultivation from Outer Scenery’s Stored Vision stage. |
| Muffled Crow in Ambush form completed | 115 | Concealed lightning kills Hu Shan and Li Hua, completing the aspect’s form and bringing Li Fuchan to minor attainment of Outer Scenery. |
Background / History
Ancient Thunder Palace
In accounts of its ancient manifestation, Li Thunder darkened the sun and moon until lightning and Li fire filled the wilderness. Its presence deterred demons and even established immortal cultivators from devouring people. Li Thunder subdued evil and upheld righteousness, while Jade Thunder enforced judgment 34 38.
According to Three Nothing, the Thunder Palace attempted to use Li Thunder to “nail” a law into heaven and earth, making heaven enforce it without relying on cultivators to administer thunder punishments. The attempt failed and caused Li Thunder to withdraw, but the conceptual image of anchoring remained within it 66.
Decline and Surviving Inheritance
Li Thunder’s uncompromising demands made its practitioners vulnerable: refusing to kill evil reduced their attainment, while being deceived by evil could shake their foundations. Fear of its backlash helped leave the path languishing for a thousand years 102.
Its northern lineage had disappeared by Li Fuchan’s time. Peaceful Way Abbey nevertheless retained the Purple Firmament Thunder-Script Treasure Register, brought north by a patriarch two hundred years earlier. Welcome Ying Isle also preserved Li Thunder practitioners alongside its more complete Jade Thunder inheritance 18 63.
Transformation Through Li Fuchan
Li Fuchan identified an overlooked opening in the principle “bully evil, uphold righteousness.” He reasoned that “bullying” included deception and humiliation, so Li Thunder did not necessarily have to operate openly or honorably. This interpretation enabled its transformation into Muffled Crow in Ambush, replacing conspicuous punishment with concealed action 101 102 103.
The change did not remove its obligation to oppose evil. Instead, it demanded more deliberate intervention and meaningful results, binding Li Fuchan’s advancement to the conflicts he sought to navigate 104.
Manifestation
- Traditional form: Golden thunder and crimson flames, accompanied by an overwhelming presence that ordinary concealment techniques cannot hide 63 79 114.
- Thunder script: In Li Fuchan’s qi sea, the initial script is palm-length and roughly three fingers wide, with interwoven thunderfire inscriptions and faint sounds of thunder and flames 18.
- Lightning-Struck Wood: A withered tree suspended in the sky, sending down successive thunderbolts 86.
- Muffled Crow in Ambush: Heavy clouds containing dim lightning and deep, restrained rumbling; power gathers without immediately producing thunderclaps or rain 102 104.
- Concealed movement: Transformed lightning can appear as an ink-dark streak moving silently through shadows, vegetation, and rock crevices 120.
Disposition and Apparent Agency
Li Thunder is described as lonely and unreconciled, but its attention is selective. It notices Li Fuchan when, despite standing at the lowest rank of Outer Scenery, he fearlessly challenges a Wisdom King 26 104.
Its judgments do not simply follow religious standing or social prestige. It regards the Wisdom King as demonic evil, and its hostility extends to immortal cultivators who consume blood qi or human beings 26 79.
Its later actions suggest purposeful agency: it intervenes in Li Fuchan’s karma and strengthens the connection attached to his alias. Li Fuchan finds this disturbing enough to wonder why Li Thunder seems “so much like a person,” but the context does not establish that it is literally one 143.
Abilities & Skills
Thunderfire and Suppression
- Commands thunder and lightning, drives light and fire, breaks demonic forces, burns away evil, clears obstructions, illuminates hidden depths, refines and delivers souls, and empowers weapons 18.
- Naturally suppresses monsters and cultivators who consume blood qi. Against Flying Light, it makes at least a tenth of the monster’s magical power difficult to circulate 45.
- Exposed blood qi intensifies its suppression. Li Hua loses nearly thirty percent of his Dharma power to roaming concealed bolts before Li Fuchan attacks him directly 115.
- Lightning-Struck Wood gains greater killing power in the air; on the ground, crimson fire burns opponents’ magical power and minds 86 87.
Judgment of Practitioners
- Cultivators regard Li Thunder as proof of compassion, righteousness, and impartiality because it can strike down its own wielder 30 38.
- Under its traditional rules, seeing evil without killing it diminishes Dao attainment; prolonged association with evil causes further losses and may provoke backlash 40 62 79.
- Its influence increases Li Fuchan’s anger and ruthlessness toward demons, ghosts, and hauntings, even while he uses other arts to restrain it 22.
- Its recognition grants valuable Dao attainment, but does not guarantee rescue from a stronger enemy 26 96.
The “Nail” of Li Thunder
- Its surviving conceptual image can anchor difficult Dao Fruits, accelerating their cultivation and subsequent refinement into divine abilities 66.
- Three Nothing estimates that Gold-Gathering Current ordinarily requires at least sixty years, but Li Fuchan could cultivate it in twenty using Li Thunder 66.
- This ability makes accomplished practitioners valuable targets for Purple Mansion Lords seeking divine abilities 66.
- Three Nothing judges Li Fuchan’s attainment sufficient to give him a seventy-percent chance of pinning down a divine ability 119.
Muffled Crow in Ambush
- Conceals the thunder’s previously unmistakable golden lightning, red flames, and aura, allowing ambushes and hidden movement 104 114 120.
- Removes the old drawback of constant spectacle and easily depleted Dao attainment, but requires active opposition to unrighteous forces 104.
- Advances through concealment, covert strikes, and involvement in tangled conflicts—the “dark clouds” in which its lightning gathers strength 104.
- Counters enemies’ recorded methods of hiding blood qi to delay righteous punishment and undermine thunder cultivators’ attainment 115.
Interference with Oaths and Karma
- Removes Li Fuchan’s penalty for breaking his spirit oath with Three Nothing because the latter is a man-eating evil spirit 102.
- Blocks his entry into the established Four Aspects of Slaying Bandits and creates a hidden Fifth Aspect through the name Li Yaoshi 143.
- The Fifth Aspect can connect to any of the Five Thieves and claim slaying-a-bandit Changze without Purple Mansion Lords perceiving its karma 143.
- This karma belongs to the alias rather than being irrevocably attached to Li Fuchan; abandoning the name would abandon the connection 143.
Cultivation and Inheritance
| Inheritance | Properties and limitations |
|---|---|
| Purple Firmament Thunder-Script Treasure Register | Third-grade manual covering aperture opening, qi gathering, replenishment of nature-and-life roots, and full mastery of Outer Scenery. Its Inner Scenery methods have been lost 18. |
| Initiation method | Requires a lightning-struck dead tree and cultivation within its blazing light to inscribe the thunder script. The process involves severe bodily pain 18. |
| Thunder Escape Sword Art | Included in the register. Its first form, Answering Lightning, Flying Thunderlight, emphasizes speed; the later forms require Sword Qi and sword essence respectively 18 44 78. |
| Welcome Ying Isle tradition | Preserves Li Thunder practitioners and knowledge of the Ancient Thunder Palace. Its restrictions on disciples’ travel make instruction there a potential threat to Li Fuchan’s freedom 63. |
Weaknesses and Counters
- Contrary Thunder: An anomalous thunder capable of cleaving thunder and commanding lightning, specifically suited to restraining Li Thunder. Peaceful Way Abbey possesses a spirit artifact of this lineage 18 73.
- Cultivation disparity: Natural suppression cannot reliably overcome an opponent’s superior realm or completed Nature Root 44 87.
- Traditional visibility: Golden thunder and crimson flames expose practitioners, making escape and discreet approaches difficult without the former Thunder Palace Patrol’s protection 78 79.
- Conflicting techniques: Initial cultivation burns away the Three Lights unless they are preserved elsewhere; Li Fuchan uses Brow Peak to prevent this loss 18.
- Continuing obligations: The concealed form still cannot advance through peaceful withdrawal alone; it demands engagement with evil and dangerous conflicts 104.
Relationships
- Li Fuchan — Favored practitioner and catalyst for its rift-transformation. He becomes its hidden aspect while insisting on choosing how to fulfill its demands 26 102 103 104.
- Ancient Thunder Palace — Former institution associated with its patrols and the failed attempt to establish a heaven-enforced law 63 66.
- Welcome Ying Isle — Major surviving custodian of the three thunders. Its rules prohibit attacking a Li Thunder practitioner free of blood qi and evil qi, even after a change of allegiance 63 73.
- Three Nothing / Yangshe Xu — Seeks to exploit its anchoring power to escape confinement; underestimates its capacity to change and loses his oath-based hold over Li Fuchan 66 102.
- Mu Suli / Great Compassionate Wisdom King — Draws Li Thunder’s hostility despite his exalted Buddhist position; Li Fuchan’s attack on him attracts its gaze 25 26.
- Peaceful Way Abbey — Preserves its manual but attempts to control its practitioners through broken lineages, dependency, and the Contrary Thunder artifact 18 77 94.
