Background / History

Quan Yong was one of True Person Quan Lian’s twelve disciples and was regarded as the least talented. Within two years of their master’s death, only Quan Yong and Jia Hua remained. Quan Yong became abbot and took three disciples: Zilu, Southern Peak, and Mu Liang’er 25.

Zilu and Southern Peak subsequently vanished from public life. Quan Yong claimed that one was in seclusion and the other had left the mountain; he also showed Jia Hua their Fate Jades to reassure him. Their voices later emerge from within Quan Yong, and Zilu explicitly states that his master devoured him 25 72 134 137.

The abbey’s preparations concern its eventual return to the South of the Yangtze and the struggle surrounding the Five Thieves. Quan Yong relies on Jia Hua to manage the arrangements involving Xu Xuan and Gao Huan, leaving himself free to cultivate and handle larger threats 21 137 144.

Appearance

Quan Yong conceals his harsher features behind spells that give him a mild, kindly expression 74 141.

  • Build and dress: Reasonably tall and straight-backed, usually wearing a blue-gray ritual robe 80.
  • Unconcealed face: Lean, with a sparse, short gray beard; later described as pale and gaunt, with high cheekbones 74 151.
  • Eyes: Excessive white around tiny, dull-looking pupils, with a cold gleam when they move 74.
  • During confrontations: His eyes shine with an eerie blue-green or jade-green light, giving him a ghostlike appearance 147 151.

Personality

Quan Yong’s public courtesy conceals extreme suspicion. His guiding principle is that anything conveniently delivered to him, rather than earned through bitter effort, should be treated as a possible scheme. He checks letters and calling cards for hidden dangers before reading them and refuses to trust Jia Hua’s judgment unquestioningly 74 75 145.

He is patient, secretive, and willing to sacrifice reputation for survival. Li Fuchan admits that Quan Yong surpasses him in patience, while Quan Yong’s own reflections make clear that accusations of heartlessness or depravity matter far less to him than exposure of his cultivation and hidden treasure 135 137.

His hostility is pragmatic rather than absolute. When he believes an opponent can be killed, he pursues that outcome relentlessly; when killing becomes impossible or cooperation more useful, he turns toward bargaining. By the latest encounter, he recognizes that Li Fuchan’s superior information may make him a necessary ally 102 151.

Abilities & Skills

Reflecting Shadow Chill and Shi Water

Application Effect
Azure rain Weakens Li Fuchan’s thunder techniques and slows his escaping light 89.
Reflective pools Gather around targets during his spell and provide a means of trapping Li Fuchan’s shadow 94 147.
Turbid killing power Corrupts a false body’s Spirit Talisman into filthy water, erasing its traces 150.
False-body tracking Repeatedly destroying Li Fuchan’s false bodies with turbidity can reveal the true body’s location 149 151.
Water transformation Allows Quan Yong to become a pool of turbid water and vanish 151.
  • His tracking attempt fails when Yuchi Yuanqing destroys a false body with Three Qi Lightening before Quan Yong can kill it himself 151.
  • He can also exert overwhelming direct force: during the earlier divination, he drives Gu Tong back with a single blow 92.

Nature-and-Fate Techniques

  • Before forming his Dao Fruit, Quan Yong uses ritual bows through the marvels of Nature and Fate to interfere with Li Fuchan’s judgment and keep him from entering the water 13.
  • At that stage, he explicitly denies being able to kill someone from a thousand miles away 13.
  • He can break the influence distorting Jia Hua’s judgment, restoring his ability to recognize how badly his priorities have been redirected 80.

Name-Aspect Method

  • Initially described as less learned than Jia Hua and possessing only a partial understanding of the method 13.
  • Later secretly uses it to divine through the writing on Wei Qingcheng’s note; Jia Hua never knew he possessed this skill 139.

Formations and Restrictions

  • Obtained a confinement-formation inheritance from Mount Jiuyi through a trade 21.
  • Plants a concealed restriction inside Xu Xuan to preserve a thread of mental clarity if demonic bloodlust overwhelms him. This safeguard is intended to keep Xu Xuan manageable for Gao Huan’s eventual confrontation 138.

Suppression of Internal Voices

  • Silences Zilu and Southern Peak by touching his abdomen 74 134.
  • The suppression is not permanent: Zilu insists that, because Quan Yong devoured him, his voice will remain a disturbance in his master’s state of mind 137.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

Clear-Sight Subtlety Mirror

An ancient blue-green Magical Treasure formed from Great Illumination Vision, a divine ability associated with Reflecting Shadow Chill 94 145.

Function or limitation Details
Fate and karma divination Exposes hidden connections and reveals the karmic strand linking Quan Yong’s Ghost identity to a thief-slayer 94 146.
Detection of outside influence Helps Quan Yong identify the manipulation affecting Gu Tong and Qu Chengong 94.
Indirect investigation Can investigate people connected to Li Fuchan even when Li himself is protected from divination 134 135.
Final-thought reading Can gather a dead person’s life force and reveal their strongest thought before death, but cannot survey their entire life 145.
Power consumption Repeated use drains its azure radiance; recovery can take three to five months or longer 138 147.
Replenishment Absorbing Jia Hua’s life force restores some power. Sacrificing a practitioner of the Upper Pool Fishing Azure Art is another stated option, but Quan Yong is the abbey’s only current practitioner 146 147.
Blocked scrutiny Li Fuchan’s Register Qi prevents the mirror from directly divining him 134.
  • Quan Yong keeps possession of the mirror secret because the other mountain sects would likely demand shared control if they learned of it 94.
  • Its divination later locates the Secret Seal sought by Wei Qingcheng and identifies people connected to it 145.

Contrary Thunder Spirit Artifact

  • Form: An ancient, plain yellow war drum with a dull, dustlike luster 99.
  • Attack: Three drumbeats release three dark, dusky-gray rays that shatter Li Fuchan’s thunder protection and drain his Li Thunder cultivation during the earlier divination 99.
  • Unexpected outcome: The rays subsequently enter Li Fuchan’s three mansions rather than finish him, causing Quan Yong to hesitate over whether Contrary Thunder has defied his intentions 101.
  • Leverage: Quan Yong repeatedly considers using the artifact to control or recruit a Thunder Cultivator who desires it 75 146.

Other Possessions

  • Blue-gray enchanted robe — Releases protective radiance that blocks droplets of filthy water 147.
  • Old thumb ring — Worn and turned while he analyzes the opponent’s intentions; no ability is specified 137.

Relationships

  • True Person Quan Lian — Master. Quan Yong inherited leadership after the deaths of most of Quan Lian’s disciples 25.
  • Jia Hua — Junior fellow disciple and principal outside agent. Zilu accuses Quan Yong of deliberately diverting him from cultivation and providing a Nature Root-damaging method. Jia Hua dies still worried about the burden his death will place on his senior brother 74 145.
  • Zilu — Disciple whom Quan Yong devoured. His surviving voice openly condemns his master and repeatedly mocks his hypocrisy 74 137.
  • Southern Peak — Disciple whose voice also speaks from Quan Yong’s abdomen. Initially defends him, but later urges him to take Jia Hua’s warnings seriously; Zilu hints that Quan Yong consumed him as well 74 133 134.
  • Mu Liang’er — Disciple. Quan Yong equips her for the Longzhu Forest mission; later testimony identifies her as the Wisdom Consort sent to the Wisdom King 18 74 83.
  • Li Fuchan / Li Yaoshi — Adversary and prospective ally. Quan Yong eventually treats the artifact-seeking Li Fuchan and the hidden Yaoshi as separate, loosely allied people, without recognizing the full deception 147 151.
  • Gao Huan — Key participant in the abbey’s plans. Quan Yong protects his development and intends him to obtain Slay the Thief Changze 138 150 151.
  • Xu Xuan — Cultivated demonic opponent for Gao Huan. Quan Yong maintains restrictions on him to prevent his growth from becoming uncontrollable 137 138.
  • Gu Tong — Rival sect leader. Their cordial greetings conceal mutual distrust; Gu Tong investigates Jia Hua’s disappearance to expose Quan Yong’s weakness 140 141.
  • Wei Qingcheng — Pivot Court envoy whose knowledge of his hidden capabilities pressures him into helping locate the Secret Seal 139 145.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Initial Recruitment Schemes

Quan Yong first targets Li Fuchan as a promising recruit while protecting the abbey’s three potential successors from a dangerous assignment. Jia Hua persuades him to withdraw temporarily, warning that Li’s names and apparent ambitions suggest risks beyond their understanding 13.

When Jia Hua later binds Li to the thunder inheritance, he asks Quan Yong to nurture the Contrary Thunder artifact and kill Li thirty years afterward. Quan Yong receives the proposal while continuing to manage the abbey’s other affairs 18.

Earlier Tribulation Divination: Pursuit into the Secret Seal

Quan Yong refuses Jia Hua’s proposed artifact-for-hunting bargain, turning Li Fuchan’s potential cooperation into hostility. He later intervenes personally, exposes the influence affecting Jia Hua, and pursues Li into the Hunting Grounds despite the danger of disturbing the abbey’s destiny 75 80 89.

Inside the Secret Seal, he reveals the Clear-Sight Subtlety Mirror to Gu Tong and Qu Chengong, securing their secrecy and cooperation. His attempt to kill Li with Contrary Thunder instead contributes to Li’s transformation. Quan Yong prepares to negotiate, only to be shocked when the young man behind the stele dies 94 99 101 102.

Current Events: Forced off Flying Yellow Mountain

Li Fuchan’s concealment defeats the mirror’s scrutiny. Quan Yong refuses to descend for four months despite Jia Hua’s urgent reports, forcing Li to escalate his pressure 133 134 135.

Jia Hua’s death finally brings him down. Quan Yong retrieves the untouched corpse, reinforces Xu Xuan’s restriction, and checks Gao Huan before encountering Wei Qingcheng. Her note naming “Shi Water” and “Great Illumination Vision” demonstrates knowledge of capabilities he has concealed 137 138 139.

Current Events: Probing Li Fuchan

After helping the Pivot Court locate the Secret Seal, Quan Yong discovers that his karmically linked thief-slayer appears to be hiding there. Li Fuchan then openly demands the Contrary Thunder artifact, encouraging Quan Yong to believe he may provide a route to Yaoshi 145 146 147.

Quan Yong attacks and follows Li’s false bodies through the Gao and Yuchi households. Although Yuchi Yuanqing inadvertently ruins his tracking attempt, Quan Yong declines to retaliate. He concludes that Li’s knowledge and strategic temperament may supply the outside help needed to protect himself, preserve the abbey, and return south 147 150 151.
