Background / History
Assault and Ning Lin’s Imprisonment
During an eruption of his evil fire, Ma Hongjun attempts to assault a female Soul Master in Heaven Dou City. Ning Lin intervenes, and Ma Hongjun retaliates with Phoenix Fire Line, grievously injuring him. Ning Lin subsequently awakens in custody and concludes that Tang San has fabricated charges to protect Ma Hongjun and silence him 1.
Ma Hongjun later visits Ning Lin in the dungeon to mock his imprisonment and threaten further torture. When he attempts to punch the prisoner, Tang San stops him—not to protect Ning Lin, but to postpone the violence until after conviction. Ma Hongjun welcomes this assurance and praises Tang San’s willingness to bring down a city lord for him 13 14.
Exposure at the Public Trial
When Ning Lin names Ma Hongjun as the actual assailant, public suspicion turns toward him. Despite this, Ma Hongjun privately boasts that the woman has become his “personal maid,” credits Tang San with making her obedient, and describes keeping her in his room. His remarks disgust Dai Mubai and, when overheard, Zhu Zhuqing 16 17 18.
Bibi Dong places the witness under mental control and asks her to recount the events. The woman states that Tang San paid her to frame Ning Lin, after which she was forcibly sent to Ma Hongjun’s residence at Shrek Academy. She describes repeated abuse and torture with Soul Tools, while Tang Sect members threatened her family to prevent disclosure. Ma Hongjun denies the account, but her injuries and terror leave the crowd unconvinced 29 30.
Hostage-Taking and Defeat
During the battle against Bibi Dong, Ma Hongjun fears what will happen if she survives. He seizes the apparently helpless Ning Lin by the throat and demands that Bibi Dong dismiss her Martial Soul Avatars, cripple her soul power, and surrender. The tactic halts her attack but draws condemnation from the crowd, shame from his Shrek companions, and contempt from Tang Hao 33.
Tang San orders him to kill Ning Lin to provoke Bibi Dong into losing control. After initially hesitating, Ma Hongjun obeys and openly dismisses Ning Lin’s innocence as irrelevant. Ning Lin then releases golden and azure Heavenly Flames, breaks his restraints, overwhelms Ma Hongjun’s Evil Fire, and reverses the hold. The flames burn Ma Hongjun’s body, meridians, and Martial Soul Origin, leaving him barely conscious 34 35.
Punishment and Retreat
The woman he abused rushes onto the Judgment Platform and crushes his genitals with a stomp, permanently crippling him. Ning Lin then introduces Bone Chilling Flame into his body, reigniting the residual evil fire. The resulting rampage destroys Ma Hongjun’s awareness, leaving him alive but confused, frenzied, and driven by uncontrollable lust 36.
Ma Hongjun later appears pale, much thinner, and emotionally desolate, but able to ask Tang San what will become of him. As the group prepares to leave Heaven Dou City, Tang San promises to seek a cure and directs him to accompany Ning Rongrong to the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect for safety 42.
Appearance
- Before his defeat: Extremely obese, with small eyes, thick hands, and a face frequently described as greasy or flushed 1 13 17 30.
- During an evil-fire eruption: Blood-red eyes and a foul aura of flame radiating from his body 1.
- After Ning Lin’s counterattack: Severely charred and reduced to weak, instinctive twitching 34 35.
- Before leaving Heaven Dou City: Pale, noticeably thinner, and lacking his former lively expression 42.
Personality
Ma Hongjun is vindictive toward anyone who obstructs him. He mocks Ning Lin’s integrity, delights in his anticipated execution, and threatens to torture him after conviction. His confidence depends heavily on Tang San’s protection: he quickly replaces his aggression with a fawning smile when Tang San enters the dungeon 13 14.
His treatment of the female Soul Master reveals cruelty beyond the loss of restraint associated with evil-fire eruptions. He boasts about her captivity, while her testimony describes deliberate torture. When publicly exposed, he denies responsibility; when threatened by Bibi Dong’s strength, he resorts to hostage-taking rather than confronting her directly 17 29 30 33.
