History
Heavenly Rule and the Fierce Beast Calamity
The Demon Tribe initially possesses an established imperial court under Di Jun and Taiyi. Its senior ranks include the Ten Great Demon Marshals, the Four Directional Guardian Spirits, and the elders Nuwa and Fuxi. When Wang Shi begins taking form, the emperors mistake the disturbance for an emerging treasure and travel to Buzhou Mountain 1 33.
Conflict with the Witch Clan repeatedly threatens the surrounding world. During one battle, the demons rely on numerical superiority while Taiyi’s bell suppresses Dijiang. A division of authority subsequently places the heavens under demon rule and the earth under witch rule, but Fierce Beasts spread into both jurisdictions 24 26.
Seeking reinforcements, the court brings Kunpeng into its orbit and offers him formal recognition as Demon Master for creating demon script. The recruitment ends catastrophically when Shen Ni emerges from Kunpeng’s body and attacks the court. Taiyi is gravely wounded, Di Jun escapes, Ci Tie is killed, and numerous senior demons are injured or disappear. Nuwa and Fuxi, absent during the attack, begin organizing survivors and rebuilding the army 28 33 36.
The disaster eventually prompts military cooperation with the witches. Di Jun organizes a joint force under Taiyi to support the campaign against the Fierce Beasts 42.
Renewed Witch–Demon War
Di Jun later launches a surprise attack on Witch settlements and demands submission to the Heavenly Court. He believes unifying the Primordial World will allow him to attain the Great Dao; his preparations include a Witch-Slaying Sword forged through the slaughter of humans. Taiyi identifies Kunpeng as the source behind the renewed conflict 69.
Kunpeng argues that the tribes must destroy one another to discharge the Witch–Demon Tribulation and permit humanity’s rise. Wang Shi rejects this as an unnecessary revival of a conflict that had already been reconciled. He forcibly stops both armies and defeats the witches’ Pangu Phantom when they refuse to stand down 70 74.
Wang Shi then demonstrates the war’s likely consequences through simulations. Even after Di Jun requests a revised strategy targeting Houtu, the projected conflict devastates both factions and leaves Di Jun as the demons’ only major survivor. These are simulated outcomes, not actual deaths. The leaders accept a renewed settlement in which demons govern the heavens and witches govern the earth 75 76.
Taiyi’s disappearance further weakens the court. After finding him in Chaos, Wang Shi learns that Yang Mei has accepted him as a disciple and ordered him to remain until he becomes a Saint. Wang Shi promises to keep the tribe stable during his absence 78.
The Golden Crow Crisis and Withdrawal
By the time of the Heavenly Marriage, the tribe faces shrinking territory and severe infighting. Bai Ze warns that its constituent races increasingly fight for themselves rather than act together. Wang Shi helps arrange Di Jun’s marriage to Xihe and Changxi, which Nuwa endorses as a union that will strengthen the tribe 98 99.
The birth of the Ten Golden Crows briefly renews confidence in the imperial succession. Nine princes later leave the Sun Star against Lu Ya’s warnings, scorching the world and killing demons as well as other beings. Hou Yi shoots down the nine, and Di Jun’s grief nearly reignites war with the witches 100.
Wang Shi reveals that he has preserved the princes’ lives and persuades Di Jun to abandon the throne. With the Saints’ approval, the Demon Tribe withdraws to the Northern Kuru Continent, the Demon Court collapses, and humanity expands into its former territories. Di Jun chooses seclusion but promises to answer Wang Shi’s call if the world is threatened 101.
Reform and the Demon Realm
Withdrawal does not end the tribe’s internal violence. Wang Shi warns that continued killing on the Northern Kuru Continent increases karmic sin and could help trigger another calamity. Rather than destroy the tribe, he proposes education, standardized cultivation, regulated tribulations, and a dedicated Demon Realm 118 119.
Hongjun supports the project because the war against darkness requires additional powerful defenders. Wang Shi secures access to the Primordial Origin Sea, helps Di Jun comprehend the relevant Daos, and provides resources for the realm’s construction. Di Jun shapes its rules while Wang Shi helps establish its foundational laws and living environment 119 120 121 122.
Di Jun attains Sainthood through the new realm, but Hongjun diverts the merit and fortune due to him. Wang Shi confronts Hongjun over this interference. The realm’s subsequent development remains slow until Houtu shows Di Jun the Underworld’s reforms, prompting him to ask for her guidance 123 132.
Invasion by the Dark Forces
Dark Deities and allied Otherworlders invade while the Demon Tribe’s strongest fighters are occupied elsewhere. More than half the realm falls within days, and the invaders establish breeding camps on captured land. Xihe and Changxi oversee the homeland’s defense while Bai Ze struggles to hold the remaining territory 169 172.
Lu Ya joins the campaign with Kong Xuan and the Golden-Winged Great Peng. Wang Shi rescues them from Dark Deities, then strikes through the enemy rear while instructing the younger fighters. The resulting collapse of enemy resistance allows demon units to advance and reclaim ground 173 176.
Conflict with Humanity
Despite most demons having moved into the Demon Realm, large populations remain on the Northern Kuru Continent. Nuwa mobilizes demons in support of Northern Di against Xuanyuan’s unification campaign 224.
Xuanyuan combines propaganda, fortified positions, explosives, and coordinated cultivator formations to undermine and defeat the coalition. Taotie and the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox surrender, while Di Jun, Taiyi, and Nuwa withdraw. Taiyi briefly recognizes that his hostility toward Wang Shi feels unnatural, but the suspicion is overwhelmed by renewed hatred 225 226.
System Crisis and Leadership Change
System Lifeforms bring another upheaval. Di Jun and Taiyi retreat into the realm’s origin source to resist infections that consume their bodies, leaving the tribe’s clans fighting without effective leadership. Wang Shi intervenes and destroys the lifeforms devouring Taiyi 252.
The relationship subsequently turns hostile. Demons and system-aligned outsiders accuse Wang Shi of seeking control of the Primordial World and trap him in the Zhou Tian Star Dou Great Array. He escapes by identifying its Life Gate 254 255.
Later investigation establishes that the native emperors are not simply helpless system puppets: they have obtained weapons, medicines, and other benefits through a symbiotic agreement while restricting system activity. Nevertheless, the realm remains sealed and relations with Wang Shi deteriorate 256 260.
When Wang Shi and the Saints confront the tribe, the apparent Di Jun secretly prepares to sever the realm from the Primordial World. He reveals that he has used the Fiend God Pearl to disguise himself. Taiyi, suspecting that this figure is not his brother, seeks Wang Shi’s help to capture him without endangering the real Di Jun 264 265.
After further discussions, both emperors are stripped of office and made supreme elders. Wang Shi announces a Ten Thousand Demons Ceremony for one year later, with the strongest eligible member of the younger generation to become emperor 268.
Organization and Society
Leadership
| Position | Known Figures | Function or Significance |
|---|---|---|
| Demon Emperors | Di Jun and Taiyi | Lead the original court; later become the tribe’s Saints and eventually supreme elders without responsibility for realm administration 1 256 268. |
| Demon Empresses | Xihe and Changxi | Direct the Demon Realm’s defense while the emperors are absent 169. |
| Demon Master / Imperial Preceptor | Kunpeng | Creates demon script and receives recognition for preserving the tribe’s written legacy; later serves as imperial preceptor 28 98. |
| Ten Great Demon Marshals | Bai Ze, Ci Tie, and others | Senior military and administrative figures. Bai Ze advises the emperors and commands the homeland’s defense; Ci Tie dies during Shen Ni’s attack 27 36 169. |
| Four Directional Guardian Spirits | Names not specified | Senior court forces badly wounded during Shen Ni’s pursuit of the emperors 36. |
| Elders | Nuwa and Fuxi | Hold special standing and need not attend court unless summoned; organize recovery after its destruction 33. |
| Imperial heirs | Ten Golden Crows | Di Jun’s sons. Lu Ya is the Tenth Crown Prince and a succession candidate supported by Wang Shi 100 120. |
Social Structure and Reform
- Composite identity: The tribe gathers countless smaller races with different habitats and customs; nominal membership does not guarantee political unity 98 119 132.
- Traditional hierarchy: Strength determines status, with the weak vulnerable to the strong. The later succession contest retains selection through combat 119 268.
- Written heritage: Kunpeng’s demon script gives the tribe a means of transmitting its legacy across generations 28.
- Proposed academy system: Wang Shi calls for a Demon Tribe Academy, unified cultivation methods and realms, and lightning tribulations at every breakthrough 119.
- Merit-based advancement: Under the proposed reforms, demons with sufficient merit may assume human form and enter the tribe’s Heavenly Court to cultivate proper arts 119.
- Development priorities: Houtu argues that social reform and a suitable Great Dao system matter more than Di Jun’s slow, personally supervised construction projects 132.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Vitality
- Demons are renowned for powerful bodies and endurance, although the witches possess an advantage in prolonged physical combat in Wang Shi’s war simulation 75 122.
- Some powerful Demon Kings survive decapitation, though the injury leaves them unable to resist capture 226.
- Within the Demon Realm, its origin source can restore injured demons if their souls survive 254.
- Exceptional innate talent does not guarantee rapid Dao comprehension; Wang Shi identifies slow comprehension as a major obstacle to the tribe’s advancement 120.
- Producing descendants can require thousands or tens of thousands of years, making sustained losses against rapidly reproducing Otherworlders particularly dangerous 173.
Zhou Tian Star Dou Great Array
Also called the Heavenly Cycle Star Dou Great Array, this formation combines the tribe’s forces into a collective defense.
- In Wang Shi’s war simulation, continuous demon reinforcements allow it to contest the witches’ Dutian Divine Fiends Formation, but it eventually fails when the tribe cannot sustain the effort 75.
- A later array is prepared specifically to contain Wang Shi, with Taiyi crediting Fuxi’s assistance 255.
- The two Demon Saints sustain this trap, distribute injuries among participants, and draw on the Demon Realm’s origin to heal them 255.
- It possesses a Life Gate and a Death Gate. Wang Shi escapes through the Life Gate after studying it during a day of combat 255.
System-Derived Strength
- By the system crisis, almost every Demon Tribe powerhouse has acquired a Superweapon, and the tribe has stockpiled system-awarded spiritual medicines and pills 256.
- Taiyi requires approval for system missions, forbids mind manipulation, and imprisons system spirits for study 256.
- The benefits remain dangerous: system infections consume the emperors’ bodies, while system influence and outsiders exploit distrust to turn demons against Wang Shi 252 254.
Territory
| Territory | Significance |
|---|---|
| Heavens / Thirty-Three Heavens | Original sphere of demon government under the settlement with the witches; also threatened by the Fierce Beast calamity 26. |
| Northern Kuru Continent | Refuge after the court’s collapse. Its forests and mountains continue to support large demon populations after most migrate to the Demon Realm 101 224. |
| Sun Star | Di Jun’s residence during the tribe’s decline and the location where he studies reform plans with Wang Shi 111 120. |
| Demon Realm | Dedicated homeland created by Di Jun and Wang Shi at the edge of Chaos, anchored by the Jade Disc of Creation 121 122. |
Demon Realm Defenses
- Its rules suppress outside powers and make replenishing them difficult, favoring the tribe’s physically powerful members 122.
- Its origin source supports regeneration and gives native defenders a major advantage in battle 254.
- Despite these advantages, it loses more than half its territory when its strongest defenders are committed to the dark front 169.
- The realm’s incomplete development and insufficient Dao comprehension leave it unstable when its leaders consider separation from the Primordial World 264.

- Yang Mei — Takes Taiyi as his disciple and prioritizes his cultivation over his immediate obligations to the tribe 78.
- Fierce Beast Tribe / Shen Ni — Enemies responsible for the destruction of the original Demon Court and the deaths or injuries of many senior demons 33 36.
- Dark Forces and Otherworlders — Invaders whose territorial expansion and rapid reproduction threaten the tribe’s survival 169 172 173.
- System Lifeforms — Dangerous partners supplying substantial cultivation resources; their presence contributes to infection, distrust, and the sealing of the Demon Realm 252 256 260.
