Something resembling a rift had appeared overhead. It was a shocking sight, as though someone had slashed a curtain with a knife, or a crack had opened across a sheet of white paper—except this had happened in the sky.
The rift grew larger and larger, expanding from an arm's length to ten feet, then from ten feet to a hundred, forming an archway edged with a flowing, dark golden halo. Beyond the archway lay an even deeper darkness.
