Background / History

Hatching and early care

Qian Wanyu found Toothless’s egg before it hatched, but it remained unresponsive in her storage space. Minghui eventually brought it to life through daily spirit-herb baths, essence blood, and patient care. What began as raising a magical pet became a mother–daughter relationship 269 359.

Unable to identify Toothless’s species, Minghui searched ancient books with her and promised to help find others of her kind. She later hoped to teach Toothless medicinal-herb recognition, reading, and speech—and eventually see her take human form 50 269.

Toothless’s early development was interrupted by contact with a plant carrying an intensified Death Aura. Black mist gathered around her claws, and her forelegs underwent painful changes. The resulting impairment lasted for months; Minghui sought help from the Royal Academy’s Dean and worked on medicine for her 92 95 103.

Blade Mountain and Little White Ball

Separated from Minghui inside Blade Mountain, Toothless tried unsuccessfully to break through a stone door before following scent trails. She entered a dark tiger’s den, found a bullied white cub, and shared her teething stick with it. The cub became Little White Ball, whom Toothless guided, fed, and protected 149 151.

Aunt Qin and Aunt Fang attempted to seize both creatures for the Qian Family’s eldest miss. Wei Junlan intervened, while Toothless’s desperate roar alerted Minghui and Qian Wanyu. Toothless awakened fire during the confrontation and subsequently recovered in Minghui’s storage space with regular Spirit Liquid 151 154.

As she grew, Toothless became an active protector and mount. Her flames helped melt death-tainted ice, destroyed the Sticky Life Mother Worm within Qian Zhuoqian, and burned Meng Yixiao’s expelled remnant to ashes 183 189.

Discovering her Dragonfolk heritage

In Long County Village, Toothless’s resemblance to an old portrait led the Little Golden Pseudo-Dragon to identify her with the Dragon God, then consider her a descendant. Toothless acquired Dragonfolk relics from him, while Minghui and Qian Wanyu began discussing whether she should seek her origins 302 303.

At Dragon-Trapping Valley’s Deep Pool, Toothless repeatedly challenged a phantom tomb guardian. His conditions required her to awaken her intelligence and defeat him; he later relaxed the combat requirement to making him voluntarily retreat one step. Her persistence gradually developed into calculated feints and attempts to dislodge him 323 330 337 338.

Toothless finally made the guardian move during the valley’s collapse. He demonstrated a resonant dragon’s cry and opened the Dragonfolk Sanctuary, where she encountered enormous ancestral skeletons. Afterward, Minghui found her wounded but alive, with a fiery-red stone embedded in her forehead 340 341.

Human transformation and lost memories

Toothless later appeared in human form, seized a stolen Dragon Core, and unleashed true fire against those present. Qian Wanyu recognized her through her flames and forehead mark, but Toothless no longer remembered the companions who had raised her. Minghui’s eggshell fragment and familiar aura persuaded her to remain with them 359.

Proud of her Dragonfolk identity and suspicious of human motives, Toothless helped combine the Dragon Core with the Eye of Truth to reveal maps of the Dragonfolk homeland. Her attachment to the group resurfaced gradually: she described them as “us” and unexpectedly called Minghui “Mother,” though she initially fled afterward 361 362 365 371.

While trapped in the Longevity Cauldron, Minghui witnessed visions carried through Toothless’s true flame. They showed Toothless chained and whipped, abandoned in the Fiend Soul Sea Forest, and tormented by fiendish creatures. She eventually fought back, devoured her tormentors, and charged into a volcano 383.

Toothless’s affection became unmistakable again when she sought Minghui’s touch and rescued her during Ice Lotus Mountain’s collapse. Her recovered memories were confirmed when she called Minghui “Mother” during the later encounter with a thick-browed Dragonfolk man 386 390.

The hostile Dragon Core

A Dragon Core Toothless had protected entered her soul sea and attempted to take her body. Inside the sanctuary, it possessed an ancestral skeleton, exploiting Toothless’s reluctance to damage the fallen elders’ remains. Minghui and Pig Immortal Grass used Black Medicine to disrupt its refuge and give Toothless an opening 397.

Ding Ding subsequently trapped Toothless and the Fierce Beast inside the Longevity Cauldron, delivered medicine, and attacked the hostile Core directly. Toothless resisted and strengthened, but the two cores eventually became indistinguishable. Removing the wrong one could transfer her memories and identity to the rival consciousness, so the group sealed her in an Ice Coffin while seeking a solution 399 402 403.

In Dragonfolk Territory, removing the Ice-Type Spring Pearl woke Toothless, but the hostile Core still controlled her. The Dragon Queen took her into seclusion to save her. Toothless later emerged awakened, having accepted her Dragonfolk inheritance; the process visibly aged the Queen 437 445.

Inheritance and leadership

Despite embracing her heritage, Toothless continued seeking Minghui’s company. They agreed to tend the failing Spirit Herb Garden together, and Toothless defended Minghui as her mother when Purple Feather confronted them. She then fought Kehan alongside the Dragon God and Dragon Queen 445 446.

Minghui eventually explained that she had to leave to fulfill her responsibilities to the Longevity Tribe. Toothless reluctantly accepted their separation and received advice on caring for the Dragon God’s recurring Living Dead Poison 446.

By her later emergence from seclusion, Toothless had become a capable Dragonfolk leader and ordered stronger defenses against Death Spirit Masters. She also rejoined her companions during the Death Valley conflict. Ten years after the Death Spirit Masters’ defeat, she returned to lead her people, with Little White Ball choosing to accompany her 543 567 574 578.

Appearance

Toothless’s beast form develops from a small, furry creature into an imposing black, winged dragonlike beast; her human form is a beautiful young woman with a distinctive red forehead mark 151 324 359 386.

  • Black fur: Glossy when healthy; becomes disheveled during her repeated defeats by the phantom guardian 179 324.
  • Black wings: Unfurls them to fly and catch Minghui during Ice Lotus Mountain’s collapse 386.
  • Eyes: Bright dragon eyes, later described as pitch-black pupils with flowing flame patterns 301 386.
  • Forehead stone: A fiery-red, ruby-like diamond appears after Dragon-Trapping Valley’s collapse; in human form, it resembles a red beauty mark 341 359.
  • Increasing size: Approximately half a meter long on Blade Mountain, later chest-high to Minghui, and eventually imposing enough to cast a broad shadow 165 301 386.
  • Family resemblance: Her mature dragon form is almost identical to the Dragon God’s 446.

Personality

Toothless is affectionate, possessive, and intensely attached to Minghui. She seeks petting, nuzzles and licks her, and dislikes suggestions that her mother has abandoned her. Her jealousy extends to companions competing for Minghui’s attention, while her hostility toward Qian Wanyu begins early 63 151 303 341 386.

Food and treasure strongly motivate her. She guards grilled fish unless she chooses to share it, collects valuable objects even when they are not useful to her, and entrusts her finds to Minghui. Nevertheless, her first meeting with Little White Ball shows generosity: she shares food with a bullied stranger and takes responsibility for the cub’s safety 149 302 303.

Her early timidity and easygoing behavior give way to stubborn courage and tactical intelligence. Repeated defeats do not deter her from challenging the phantom guardian, and she learns to deceive opponents rather than merely charge them. After taking human form, pride in her Dragonfolk identity becomes pronounced, sometimes producing contempt for humans, rash accusations, and excessive violence 330 337 359 361 371.

Maturity does not erase her prickliness. As a leader, she remains blunt and quick-tempered, but can recognize an unwinnable fight, retreat, report useful observations, and prioritize her people’s defense. Her rowdy relationship with Little White Ball continues alongside these responsibilities 543 574 578.

Trivia

  • Minghui named her Toothless because she had no teeth when she hatched—not because she remained toothless. A later broken tooth regrew after a period in which she sulked and refused food 138 436.
  • Minghui once adapted the Monkey King’s story with Toothless as its hero. Toothless woke indignantly when she overheard a new version starring Little Sprout instead 179.
  • Despite loving cleanliness and disdaining the bloody tiger den, Toothless repeatedly ends up filthy during battles—something that particularly irritates her during the Skeleton Soldier pursuit 149 574.
  • Minghui’s early hope that Toothless might become “a mighty dragon who commands her entire race” anticipates her eventual leadership role 269 543 578.
