Background / History
The Longevity Cauldron has a history predating Ding Ding’s travels with Minghui. Yuchi Shou’s ancestral paintings depict its owner fighting the Dragon God in a final battle, after which Dragonfolk Territory was sealed. Yuchi Shou concludes that the owner died because the cauldron remained on Ice Lotus Mountain for a hundred years; this is his inference rather than a witnessed death 414.
Minghui’s dream shows the cauldron wielded by a silver-haired man during that battle. A high-ranking Dragonfolk woman brings out the Soul-Separation Mirror to oppose it. Ding Ding also hears its master’s familiar voice in its own recollections, including invitations to catch dragons and eat roast dragon meat 415.
Xiu Qi recognizes the Longevity Cauldron and calls it “Ding Ding” before the weapon spirit later chooses that name for itself. Ding Ding asks to address Minghui as “Little Nine,” establishing the nickname it continues using for her 388 390.
A later account states that the force of a self-detonation restored Ding Ding’s old memories. Its renewed search for the Child Emperor brings distress: it rejects Xiu Qi’s suggestion that its master may be dead, and later cries when it cannot find him. Jian Tong Yao comforts it and encourages cultivation as a way to pursue their hoped-for reunions 544 555.
Appearance
- Tiny, winged figure: Often rests in Minghui’s palm, on her shoulder, or behind her neck; its flight can resemble a little bee moving through the trees 399 514.
- Childlike face: Has round cheeks, a small nose, and dark, beanlike eyes. Its cheeks puff up when it becomes angry 396 422 518.
- Resembles Little Nine: Qian Yiling notes its likeness to her 482.
- Variable size and form: Can shrink further, become a little rod, or grow to match an enormous monster 443 454.
- Cauldron form: An exquisitely shaped vessel bearing ancient patterns and a flowing Ten-Thousand-Longevity Vine Pattern 414 415 588.
Personality
Ding Ding is inquisitive, playful, and impulsive. It imitates Minghui’s posture, repeats other people’s words, and treats dangerous confrontations as games. Its poor understanding of consequences makes it a persistent troublemaker: it destroys buildings, provokes monsters, and releases a dangerous sealed weapon while merely looking for a rock to use in a dart game 396 421 480 518.
Food is its most reliable incentive. Fish slices, dried fish, roast fish, and teething sticks can persuade it to cooperate, while metal-type spiritual power is another prized reward. It also likes glittering objects and brings attractive treasures to Little Nine as gifts 408 421 424 560.
Its attachment to Little Nine is protective and emotionally intense. Ding Ding readily attacks those who threaten her, but can obey her instruction not to hurt others. Separation from her and uncertainty about its master leave it distressed; after Minghui and Wanyu depart, it becomes increasingly demanding toward Qing Mo and Little Color while gathering resources to advance 470 471 555 588.
Abilities & Skills
Longevity Cauldron Control
Ding Ding’s physical strength depends on the Longevity Cauldron, which serves as its true body, weapon, refuge, and transport 408 416.
- Enlarges the cauldron to trap the Ice Lotus Mountain Fierce Beast; confinement greatly reduces the beast’s power 388.
- Shelters the group from sword formations, monster tides, and crushing pressure 422 454 460.
- Carries people, enormous creatures, weapons, and supplies while Ding Ding travels outside 468 470 588.
- Secretly places Qian Wanyu inside to rescue her from a sacrificial ceremony 428.
- Uses the vessel as a battering weapon against trees, buildings, ice barriers, and other weapons 392 419 422 514.
- Cannot simply smash through every obstacle: three blows fail to break the iron gate near Dragonfolk Territory 425.
- Does not eliminate hazards within its interior; impacts can produce deafening noise, and a carelessly deposited carcass injures Yi Chen 422 470.
Metal and Weapon-Spirit Consumption
Ding Ding absorbs metal-type spiritual power and consumes metal-bearing objects and weapon spirits 399 422 588.
- Feeds directly on Qian Wanyu’s metal-type power 399 414.
- Extracts golden weapon spirits from animated blades, restoring some of its energy while leaving the blades inert and dull 422.
- Removes opponents’ weapons, breastplates, and iron insignia almost instantaneously 565.
- Miniaturizes collected weapons and can turn them into dried-fish shapes before eating them 565 567.
- Sleeps after excessive weapon-spirit consumption while releasing surplus power 425.
- Once drains Wanyu’s power uncontrollably, nearly exhausting both her and Minghui because their cultivation is linked 414.
Strength, Flight, and Resizing
Ding Ding combines agility with strength far beyond its usual tiny size 408 454.
- Knots the bodies of Giant Worms and swings one into others 408.
- Knots hostile vines and darts between them during the Tree Spirit battle 419.
- Pulls the heavy Nine-Ring Chain from cave walls, although the chain remains attached to Lance 468.
- Escapes the Nine-Headed Infant through one of its heads, then kills it by tying its heads together and beating it 470.
- Grows to the mountain overlord’s size and knocks him backward, but is nevertheless captured and outmatched 454.
- Flies and swims freely, scouts ahead, and pursues targets underwater 407 408.
Weapon Formation and Combat
Ding Ding learns to manifest a spiritual blade and uses the cauldron against sentient weapons 419 422.
- Forms a roughly thirty-centimeter blade for quick attacks followed by immediate retreat 419.
- Battles the Radiant Sword repeatedly, occupying it while Qian Wanyu recovers and observes 480.
- Smashes a powerful roaming sword with the enlarged cauldron and retrieves it alongside the Soul-Suppressing Stone 422.
- Its small fireballs are ineffective against the Thousand-Year Tree Spirit’s vines 419.
Fierce Beast Deployment
Ding Ding houses the ice-type Fierce Beast in the cauldron and releases it when the group needs its strength or elemental power 403 419 425.
- Releases it to counter Toothless’s fire-type power 403.
- Uses it against enemies and the Thousand-Year Tree Spirit 390 419.
- Supplies the missing ice-type participant for the Dragonfolk Territory barrier plan 425.
- Keeps the beast sufficiently intimidated that it generally avoids causing trouble inside the cauldron 421.
- The beast retains its own preferences and bargains for an Ice-Type Spring Pearl before helping with the barrier 425.
Observation and Imitation
Ding Ding can learn by watching its companions, though its attention and judgment are unreliable 396 399.
- Identifies false versions of Minghui and traps them during the inheritance-ground illusion 392.
- Learns basic spirit-herb identification and memorizes Minghui’s refining sequence. By copying her and using Toothless’s flame inside the cauldron, it produces an unusual medicinal fragrance 396.
- Can enter Toothless’s body to check her condition, but forgets to ask for information it was supposed to obtain 399.
- Retrieves advanced Dragonfolk texts for Minghui’s research 439.
Resistances and Vulnerabilities
- Death aura: Can move through it, but prolonged exposure drains its true body 422 443.
- Soul-Separation Mirror: Contact overwhelms it with unfamiliar memories and causes it to release the mirror. It repeatedly expresses fear and dislike of the object 414 427 428.
- Lightning: Is terrified when bolts appear to pursue it; sheltering others inside the cauldron still leaves its true body exposed 416.
- Exhaustion: Demanding work and heavy feeding can be followed by sleep lasting several days 414 424 425.
- Emotional energy loss: Crying “Golden Beans” consumes its spiritual power 555.
